Played a course this weekend that rebuilt their greens about 2yrs ago with Champions Bermuda grass. Problem is they do not overseed in the winter and simply dye the greens when the grass goes dormant. I had a hell of a time trying to read break as the discoloration of the green played tricks with the undulations. Anyone have any experience with this grass or situation?
A couple of tips I got which helped me tremendously with my green reading.
1. Take a look around you, especially if it is a residential course and use horizontal lines found on houses as a reference point to see which way the green and your putt slopes.
2. Read the grain to help read putts. Champions doesn't have much grain, but it's still there like all Bermudas. Grain tends to grow East ---> West as we all know. However, on slopes, especially extreme ones, the grain grows in the direction water will flow, or will drain off the green.
Hope that helps.
