A few years ago attending a wedding I played a round with rental clubs at a very exclusive club. The carry bag I was handed was a MacKenzie Walker bag, it was a total throw-back designed by Peter Jacobsen and made by this small company in Portland. It was great to have such a light bag and it brought me back my youth a bit. I went searching for the company online and couldn't find them anywhere, so I gave up.

Well, yesterday I found that the MacKenzie Golf Bag Co. has been brought back to life with a new website and some REALLY cool leather goods and carry bags. For the guy who has everything, including a fat billfold, these bags are the best:

Check out the shag bags!!

I have no relation to the company. Just a fan.

Great post! What irons were in that rental set :-) The only thing is when you take a look at the prices it may change your mind. But those bags are a thing of beauty!

i was looking at TGW the other day and i saw sun mountain has a line of 'vintage' bags now. Same look, but i'm sure the quality is much less. I think it's a sweet look, real class.

drewspin, did they seem durable to you? I would be nervous with all that nice leather coming in contact with wet ground.

Very nice well made products & very expensive. I would question their durability as well but a great niche of the market to target. Sure the "old school" golfers that still play with the wooden clubs and gutta percha balls would be all over this. There is a name for this society but I apologize I cannot remember it.

hey i dunno

im thinking of un retiring my old school single strap jones carry bag and i dont have an AARP card...as of yet anyways :P

Yeah, the rental clubs were all Titleist, not blades unfortunately, a 983 driver, and a bullseye flange putter. It was a great day walking! The rental sunday bag was cordura, not leather. Had I known that I wouldn't have been able to find one for a couple of years, I would have offered the pro top dollar!

Good question on durability. I don't know how long leather bag like this will last. I suspect how you use it and care for it will have a lot to do with the longevity. You wouldn't want this bag in the rain a lot, but I'm sure it will break in like your favorite ball glove, and may also need some repairs over the years.

Quick aside:
------------
When I was preparing for my wedding day, I went looking for a classic black leather cap-toe shoes that were not patent leather to go with my tuxedo. A nice tux. I looked around a lot, not finding what I wanted. I finally went to Nordstom and found the perfect style. They were made by Bruno Magli. Hmmm... O.J. shoes? I did not look at the price. I tried them on, they felt perfect. and unlike any pair of dress shoes I'd had before. The leather was buttery soft and they were so comfortable they didn't feel like dress shoes at all. So I said to the sales guy (very attentive) how much? My jaw dropped a bit with his response. They were nearly $400. I swallowed hard and bought them. One more wedding expense.

Now, I don't wear those shoes weekly, but I do wear them frequently and more than five years later they still look great and are still the most comfortable dress shoes I have, by far. When I wear them my feet are happy. I now think that $400 was a very fair price for those shoes. (I still haven't bought another $400 pair since then, but I might if they were perfect).
----------------

Now I think of these golf bags kind of like those shoes. You'd feel bad slogging through the rain with it or setting it down on a muddy wet course, but man, on a sunny day on a classic course... I'd be really happy carrying this bag with the hand-knit headcovers my wife is making me for Christmas.

One nice thing is that this is a very small company that was resurrected by the now president, who was a fan of the products and did not want to see them die. When I sent an information request to the email address on the web site, the president of the company replied personally.

My experience in situations like this is that customer serivce is the VERY TOP priority. For example, here's the warantee information lifted from the web site:

Those bags are very pretty! I bet my sticks would feel cozy in one of those. Mmmm!

If you like the "vintage" look. try Hotzbags.com and look at their vintage model.
You have a choice of several color combinations, and they are only $89.00.

The Hot Z Vintage would be better on a cart, but I'm not really a fan of tube-style bags for walking.

What no built-in beer cooler in the bag? What about a pop-out stand?

Those bags are nice...leather will last a golfer a long time, if cared for properly.

I love those bags. I have several of them myself. You can get them in any custom colors.

Cool bags. I know a few people that have bags that look just like those but they are black fabric, the bag is called "the mac" or "the little mac" maybe an older version.

I have been searching Fleabay Looking for a good Jones carry bag from back in the day. They were perfect. Lightweight, large round hole for clubs with three dividers kept clubs from getting tangled just fine. No muss no fuss.
