While I occasionally can't find a yardage on the courses I play, I can't bring myself to drop the cash for a primo laser range finder like the Bushnell, or even ask for one this Christmas. However, this holiday season's gift catalogue from RedEnvelope contains a $40 golf range finder (see link below). It looks nice and compact, but I can't find any details saying whether it's a laser type, or one of the less desirable optical style gizmos.

If anyone on the board has one of these, please share your thoughts on it (accuracy, usefulness, etc.) and whether it's worth asking my Aunt/Uncle for one this year (right now it's a toss up between this and a Speck case for my MacBook).

For $40 I will guarantee you that it is optical w/o even looking at it.

Yup, it's an optical type. Just found it on eBay for ~$20 shipped. Case closed!
