I have seen too many posts with incredible distance miracles by amateurs which can be the envy of some very good tour player as well.
But what is the average golfer distance for the various clubs? I feel I am relegated in the category of those who are well below average with my teeny tiny distances as follow:
Driver: 210/220 Yards (depending on how my swing is for the day)
3 wood: 190 Yards
5 wood: 180 Yards
22* Hybrid: 175 Yards
4 Iron: 170 Yards
5 Iron: 160 Yards
6 Iron: 150 Yards
7 Iron: 140 Yards
8 Iron: 130 Yards
9 Iron: 120 Yards
PW: 100 Yards
GW: 80 Yards
SW: 65/70 Yards
LW: 60 Yards
What's yours?

Hi there
I think actually there is no such thing as waht distance you should hit in terms of average. I see seniors and ladies who hit 120 yds with their 7 iron and still smoke me because they are so accurate. I would gladly give up some yds for more accuracy.
But here we go:
Driver 260 yds
3 wood 240 yds
iron 2 220 yds
iron 3 200yds
iron 4 190 yds
iron 5 180 yds
iron 6 170 yds
iron 7 160 yds
iron 8 145 yds
iron 9 130 yds
PW 115 yds
GW 100 yds
I am a highball hitter so this pretty much my carry length. From iron 5 below, I usually get no roll whatsoever.

I agree with leeux, distance is relative. I unfortunately don't get to play as many rounds as I would like, so I find myself at the driving range quite a bit. Hitting range balls, I find that I consistently hit the following distances:
Driver: 260
3-wood: 240
5-wood: 225
3-iron: 210
4-iron: 195
5-iron: 185
6-iron: 175
7-iron: 165
8-iron: 155
9-iron: 145
PW: 130
52: 120
56: 110
60: 90

I know that distance is not a super important factor, but I would love to gain 20 yards more anyway.
I am anyway curious to know what about others hit on average! All golf pros give their carry distance on Golf Digest Magazine so it is good to know recreational golfers average too... That is why I put this question on...

When I get paired up with strangers I am usually the longest hitter in my group, one of my golf buddies and I have the same distances although I hit a longer tee ball.
Driver - 275 yds
4 wood - 245 yds
21* hybrid - 225 yds
4 iron - 210 yds
5 iron - 195 yds
6 iron - 180 yds
7 iron - 165 yds
8 iron - 150 yds
9 iron - 140 yds
PW - 130 yds
GW - 115 yds
SW - 100 yds
LW - 80 yds
I usually get an extra 5 yds +/- on par 3s when hitting off a tee.

My honest and consistent distances (at least as consistnet as I can be):
Driver: 220 off the tee..longest (by far) that I have ever hit on a course is 240.
3 wood: 200 off the tee...one of my home courses has a sharp dogleg left hole, 190 yard carry from the tee over a pond to the fairway on the left, I most usually end up on the left side of the fairway of the dogleg if I use my 3 wood. Then again, sometimes in the drip, maybe I should go around right and save a stroke!
3 hybrid: 180-190 out of fairway or off tee
4 hybrid: 170-180 off tee, 160-170 fairway
5 iron: 150
6 iron: 140
7 iron: 130
8 iron: 120
9 iron 110
48 *PW: 95-100
52* wedge: 80
56* wedge 65-70
I carry a 60* wedge, but mostly for trouble in sand near the green. I also carry a 7 wood sometimes, which gets me about 170 off the tee.
I don't carry a 3 iron at all, and occasionally carry a 4 iron, only to get me out of trouble next to low hanging trees.
I am 5'8" 165#, returned to playing this year after a few year absence.

Interesting article from about.com about distances
http://golf.about.com/od/beginners/l/blclubdistance.htmI believe these are from GD survey:
QUOTE
The yardages listed in the chart below show a range for average amateurs, both male and female. As you'll see, the ranges are quite large, and represent short hitters, mid hitters and long hitters. (There are, of course, people who hit it longer, just as there are people who hit it shorter.)
Club Men Women
Driver 200-230-260 150-175-200
3-wood 180-215-235 125-150-180
5-wood 170-195-210 105-135-170
2-iron 170-195-210 105-135-170
3-iron 160-180-200 100-125-160
4-iron 150-170-185 90-120-150
5-iron 140-160-170 80-110-140
6-iron 130-150-160 70-100-130
7-iron 120-140-150 65-90-120
8-iron 110-130-140 60-80-110
9-iron 95-115-130 55-70-95
PW 80-105-120 50-60-80
SW 60-80-100 40-50-60
There is a greater gap, percentage-wise, between the longer and shorter women than there is between the longer and shorter men because better women players tend to be significantly longer than weaker women players. Especially compared to men. A male player who shoots 110 might be just as long as a guy who shoots 80. That is extremely unlikely in female players, however.

I feel distance is not of great significance. I regulary play with players who hit it past me and yet I am able to shoot better scores than them. Accuracy and short game skill will always be of more importance than distance.
Here are my distances that I work to...
Driver 260 yards
3 Wood 235 yards
3 Iron 195 yards
4 Iron 185 yards
5 Iron 175 yards
6 Iron 165 yards
7 Iron 155 yards
8 Iron 145 yards
9 Iron 130 yards
PW 115 yards
GW 90 yards
SW 75 yards
LW 60 yards
Nothing amazing for a scratch handicap, I think you will agree.

Same with me! My 100-yard club used to be a 7-Iron. In addition, if I really want to use a short iron into a smallish green, so the ball will stop, I use the AJ Bonar method and flare the club open at address, then whip the face to square at impact. I can gain anywhere from 15-25 yards doing this, sometimes more.

My distances are exactly like yours. I agree, any par four over 400 yards is a nightmare. Most longer par 3s (those pushing 200 yards) are a nightmare too, because I don't have great control over those long fairway woods or hybrids.

I could just get 10/15 yards more from my driver when I changed the R7 with a Tourstage ViQ and 10 yards increase from the Tourstage woods as well. I believe it is the shaft that makes the big improvement!
Anyway on very long par 4s, if there are no trees I go for Driver and 7 wood on the second shot. If the fairway is very narrow then I just go with 3 wood and for 2 short irons shots and try to get close to the hole to get par... if I am putting well, otherwise is a bogey (sometimes double)!! No choices...

Carlo, my distances are very similar to yours with every club except maybe 5-10 yds more with the Driver.
My SS with driver is about 93 MPH average. Much smoother with irons, in fact I usually club up and work on good solid contact to try and get pin-high as often as possible.
My question to you guys with these distances. What kind of HC do you usually play too and what yardages (set of tees) do you choose when you play a course? I am 46 years young @ 5'9" close to 180 lbs.
I generally try to choose tees that play between 6000-6300 yds. Anything further would just be too much of a struggle and no enjoyment. At those yardages I can play to a 4-5 HCP. (Typically shoot 75-78).

Still, for the most part, the distances above are arrow straight, at least up to the 5 iron or so...after that I have a slight fade up to the driver (which can be a slight draw when struck well).

Whatever distance you need to hit Driver 7/8 iron into par 4's or reach long par 3's with a 3/4 irons- so the tee you play from is important too.
average distance doesn't really matter, you should look into consistant distance.

Yes, unfortunately all the courses here are very long (over 7000 yards) and that is the reason why course management is very important for me with my average distance! Moreover the courses here are full of trees all around and the fairways narrow and OB is easy with the driver... That is why I am still a 22 handicap

(Typically shoot 75-78).

unless you are 3 putting every green, I'm sorry but no 22 handicapper should be playing tees at 7000 yards plus. Play the whites

Since I've been working out...losing weight, gaining more muscle. I've added to my distances. I've also had a few lessons thrown in there to gain more accuracy and consistancy also...I had a tendency to slice my shots therein losing distance...now if I'm not careful I'll hook 'em, but 8x out of 10, I'm in the fairway now.

Well, now you can actually compete with a bunch of guys here! Good distances... Who says that women (Michelle Wie) cannot compete with men??
Yes, now I don't feel like I'm holding the guys up too much with my play. I'm a 25 handicap so I have a lot of work to do, but at least when I'm out there, I know I can play with them and not feel so bad. It's hard to find women my age who play on a regular basis. I'm always heading to the course as a single and paired up with guys so I have to work extra hard knowing I know I might get the occasional grumpy gus who doesn't want to play with a girl.

That is with the whites! The courses (at least the reachable ones) are long here. And yes some day I really have problems with my putter (like 3 of 4 putts to get in the hole) because the greens are so sloping down every where and fast like a Ferrari!!! As I said on these courses (the 2 I can play) I have no choice!

I play often with a girl that can reach 240 Yards with her driver and she is just 5 feet tall and weight less than 90 pounds... She is a +5 handicap and it is a pleasure to play match play with her (as in match play only, I have chances to win some holes)... Guys that refuse to play with girls are only scared to loose with them. To me, I don't mind... !!

I just changed my clubs around (again) a month ago and still getting used to the distances. This is what I have found so far, also the distances are just carry, and are avg. I will have the once a round bomb of 250+ but that's definately not avg for me.

I've only been playing since March, but I really feel like I've made significant progress in a short time. I know eventually it will slow down, unless I get some lessons. So, I'm 5'10"-11", 150lbs. I have a rather informal HC of 22 (mostly owing to undeveloped ball striking abilities) and my driver SS probably averages 95. These are what I use for distances.
