CRANS MONTANA, Switzerland (PA) -- A day after his damning criticism of Ian Woosnam's Ryder Cup captaincy, Thomas Bjorn has now issued an apology.

"Having had a day to reflect on my comments, I would like to apologize for the hurtful and personal nature of my remarks to European Captain Ian Woosnam," said the Dane, who gave vent to his anger after missing out on selection for the K Club match.

"I realize I have made a mistake and, as such, have unreservedly apologized to Ian for my comments, which were made in the heat of the moment following the disappointment of not making it onto the European team," he added. "I am a passionate guy who believes that the Ryder Cup is one of the world's greatest sporting events and I was desperately disappointed not to make it into the team."

Fairplay you can understand why he was pissed!! I still think he would have done a good job lets hope Westwood does the business.

Takes guts to apologise, I hope Woosnam is gracious enough to publicly accept it. I doubt it though.

He deserves to cow down. The captains picks are just that captain's picks and they do not have to go to 11 and 12 in the standings. He did not have the right to say what he did about Woosie. If he thought he deserved it he should have played better and qualified. The apology does not mean much when the cat is out of the bag...he needs to learn to keep his big mouth shut.

I agree. There's nothing to say he had to pick 11 and 12, otherwise they wouldn't be Captain's Picks would they?

I think Woosie has chosen well - Lee is a proven performer in the Ryder Cup and will add to the camaraderie of the European team whereas Bjorn IMO is a bit of a choker when the pressure is on.

Bjorn deserved a phone call or explanation from Woosie not a brief comment from a bar.

The European team is filled with turmoil and chaos.

Is it?

Doesn't look that way to me. It loks like a very similar team to won the last Ryder Cup. Maybe a bit stronger - Olazabal is such a strong iron player he'll make a great foil for Sergio in the foursomes. Some of the rookies from last time are so much more experienced - Donald, Casey, Howell. And they have the old guard to back them up - Monty, Clarke, Westwood, Sergio, Olazabal. And 2 fine rookies. Perfectly balanced IMO - but then I'm European so I might be just ever so slightly biased tongue.gif

Unfortunately, Thomas Bjorn has been known to make comments before thinking them through, for example, his cocky comments about beating Tiger in Dubai a few years back in 2001:

"The intimidation is disappearing," Bjorn said. "People are now starting to realize you can't get intimidated by him. You have to beat him. ...

"Tiger's got to learn to lose. Jack Nicklaus won a whole lot of majors, but he finished second a whole lot of times. Tiger's got to learn to lose. That's just the way golf is. I'm sure he knows that."

Tiger hasn't lost much lately, that's for sure!!!

Thanks,
