played golf today with a guy who carrys a 8 handicap......thats not unordinary... however the way he played golf was totally different then anything ive seen before
he played right handed off the tee ......and played left hand low
then when he got to the green, he putted left handed-right hand low
I studied his swing, and honestly, it looked very uncomfortable to me..... but he seemed to manage quite well....and surprisingly he had sneaky distance off the tee.... but seemed to lack distance with irons.....
ive played alot of golf, but have never seen this swing style before.....

I once was paired up with a crosshander in a horse race. when I saw him address the ball the first time I said "were done" then he smoked one to kick in distance. He putted crosshanded too. Really good ballstriker.
PS..I tried it later when no one was looking and almost stabbed myself in the eye with the toe of my wedge. I realized then I had a bit of a flipping problem.

fitted a left hand low right hand golfer for new clubs this summer ... great ballstriker too ... played that way because his dad did so as well
kind of a strange fitting session

There has been a pro winner using this method, Sewsunker Sewgolum, from South Africa. He used left below right, playing right-handed, and was good enough to win the Dutch Open 3 times, and also became the first "Person of Colour" (definitely not my description!) to win a professional tournament in South Africa, the 1963 Natal Open........why do I remember this stuff????

I've played with a guy who hit it with his left hand low as a righty, didn't hit it very far but was reasonably accurate for the 16 mark that he was on.
It just looks so uncomfortable, I don't know if I could even attempt it!

Click to view attachmentYes, Papwa first made news by getting awarded his prize for a tourney (can`t remember which one) outside in the rain because he wasn't allowed to enter the clubhouse.

One of the better junior players in the nation when I was a kid played cross-handed like that. Even in his late 30's he still plays that way and does it to about a +3.
I tried it once and felt like I was going to break my wrists.

Charles Owens (born February 22, 1930) is an American professional golfer who has played on the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour.
Owens was born in Winter Haven, Florida. He played football at Florida A&M University and served in the U.S. Army. He suffered injuries to both knees and his left ankle during a parachute jump at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 1952 which left him handicapped.[1]
Owens turned professional in 1967 and joined the PGA Tour in 1970. During his seven years on the Tour, he won the 1971 Kemper Asheville Open, a "satellite" PGA Tour event. Owens played with a limp and
played all golf shots cross-handed. The biggest year of his professional career came on the Senior PGA Tour in 1986, when he won twice in a three tournament span, and finished eighth on the money list with $207,813.
Owens was allowed to use a cart while competing in most instances due to his disability, and once staged a protest at the 1987 U.S. Senior Open against the USGA for its ban on carts at that event.[1]
Owens also is credited with inventing and popularizing a "belly putter"[2] which he used to overcome the yips.
Owens lives in Tampa, Florida. He won the Ben Hogan Award in 1987 and was inducted into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame in 2007.

I guess this swing method is not so uncommon afterall
like I mentioned, the fellow I played with was a 8 handicap......was sneaky long with his driver but appeared to lack distance with all other clubs......
I doubt this method would work for me as it looked as if he had to be part contortionist .......
I continue to learn something new everyday.... especially in the golfing world

A lot of players who grew up in Europe and Ireland in specific, play cross handed as they grew up playing hurling which has the same cross handed grip.

When I was a kid, there was a guy at our club that, when he made contact, neither of his feet were on the ground. I'm not even joking. He just somehow had a little hop right before impact, that to my mind defies all laws of physics. Then, after impact, he would land, and take about five steps backward, with the club twirling over his head. Granted, he was NOT GOOD, by any stretch of the imagination, but it was amusing to watch.

Count me in that group of Irish hurlers!
True story - I played in the final round of a club championship a few years ago in Dublin. Of the 4 in the group, everyone had the same grip, but only one was a lefty (and he was very confused).
It looks weirder than it is as most who use the cross-handed grip seem to have the equivalent of a baseball grip. My grip is interlocking, but my thumbs touch on top of the shaft at address, effectively keeping the hands as one unit. The main downside (apart from the funny looks) is a very strong right hand which makes fades nigh on impossible...

Josh Broadway on the nationwide tour. Craziest looking swing ever. Not only is it left hand low, but I think he plays righty, putts lefty, and has the FASTEST tempo of any golfer I've seen...

Having been a Baseball player through college ,then Tennis player ,always along with Golf; I'll never question any un-orthodox style in any sport. Believe me, at my age, I've seen em' all, and the scary part is, they're usually very good! I played with a "Walk on" at my home course 2 years ago,who.........It's really hard for me to describe this.........Addressed the ball, took his hands straight back about a foot, rotated his wrists so that the club was parallel with the ground pointing down the line straight at the target, NO shoulder turn, NO weight shift, NOTHING, NADA, just.......what.......wrists????? Guy hit his Driver close to 300 yards. Irons were perfect. I was trying to find someone with a video camera, cuz I knew nobody would believe this. This guy shot a 72 from the white tees. Par is 71. I had "Night mares" for a week. Never saw this guy again. Young guy, about 35 I would guess. After about 4 holes, he said to me, "I know, weird golf swing. Everybody laughs at me because of my swing." I told him.....Laugh?..........Buster,............I'm not even gonna smile!!

My Old Man is from Ireland, and started playing baseball in the states as a kid batting cross-handed or left hand low. He says that a lot of guys in his neighborhood growing up played both baseball and golf left hand low, and most of them grew up Hurling..."the fastest game on grass" (except for golf). Great game BTW, if you get the chance, check it out. UP OFFALY!

The assistant pro at my old club used to play cack-handed. He managed to knock it round well enough to get taken on as an assistant before switching to a regular grip.

Every once in a while, I'll see this really cool guy at the club. He's a Rasta, with the dreadlocks stuffed in the hat and everything. I've played with him a couple times. His swing is a little unorthodox, but not much (really reminds me of Jeev Milkha Singh). However, the amazing thing is, he's a one-club whiz. His weapon of choice is a 5-iron, and he can play that club from ANYWHERE. I saw him successfully play out of a deep greenside bunker with the 5-iron, and I was a believer.

...... takes alot of talent to work a 5 iron out of a deep bunker.......ive seen several players able to work a 3 wood from 100 to 225 yards.....they all say the same thing...." im gonna feather this shot"

There is an older guy (I'd say 65-70) at my home course that makes the strangest loop-de-loo swing I have ever seen. Nobody says anything about it because he hits the ball as well as anybody in the group and is definitely a player (probably shoots between 77-83 every time out). He literally picks the club straight up in front of him while turning his shoulders, cocking his wrists to the left. He basically gets into the top of his swing position not by swinging back, but by lifting his arms up and putting the club behind him. Then he has a perfectly normal downswing with perfect impact positions. The closest thing I can relate it to is this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HdcP1SBcL_QThe only thing that I think hinders his game is mid-distance shots of 30-50 yards. He's stuck to where he can't make his full swing, and he certainly doesn't have a normal backswing grooved - and he just kind of loop-jerks the club around, sacrificing good contact. I always enjoy playing with him because I learn something about being a good player.
