Me and a couple friends are going to pack up and head to KC for a golf weekend. Got on the KC Metro golf website and found some good deals and decided to golf at Stone Canyon and Adams Pointe. We are very excited to golf the Stone Canyon course as it is going private next april so it will be nice to get in before that.

So has anybody played either of these courses? Any suggestions, tips or insight would be greatly appreciated. This is the first guys golf outing of hopefully many to come.

You should look at playing Hoots Hollow at Country Creek in Pleasant Hill. Fun links style course at a great price.

played 'em both... lived there for 40+ years. Both nice courses. Adams Pointe is a true "links" course with some areas surrounded by protected wetlands. Stone Canyon was fairly new last time I played it, but it's a nice track.

You should enjoy both quite a bit.

Yes to both....many times. These are the best two courses on the east side of KC.

Adams Pointe is pretty easy, and is normally in good shape now that they've switched to bent grass. Nice, but really nothing memorable. Adams Pointe is not a true links course. I consider Prairie Dunes or Sand Hills links courses....Adams Pointe is nothing like either. All the prairie grass is cut down.... Again, it's a good course for the money.

I like Stone Canyon a lot and have played it several times this year, including last weekend. It's in phenominal shape. No way it goes private next year, none. Not with this economy and the fact they have no member amenities (temp clubhouse is it). Sign up for their e-club and you might get a great rate although the specials only come out day before typically (example - foresome for $100 or $40 rate...etc). It's astetically not a very pretty course as it sits on a landfill, but it a very good challenge. The nines will be reversed once they build the clubhouse. Par 5 #6 is probably the best par 5 in the state. You'll want to bring a rangefinder as there are several holes you'll want to shoot carries to various spots. It is also very important to know yardage to the pin as the greens are very large and you need to be on correct 1/3rd. Don't believe it's on skycaddie yet.

Honestly, I'd tell you to skip Adams Pointe and play Creekmoor in Raymore (1/2 hour drive south) instead. Seriously, it is a VERY good course. I'll be surprised if it doesn't host somekind of mini-tour or major amateur event in the next few years.

Thanks for all the info. I got a deal on Stone Canyon and we are going to be playing if for $40 a person which I didn't think was too bad. As far as it going private I was just going by what their website said but what you says makes perfect sense. I actually just checked out skycaddie last night and loaded the two courses on my 3.5 and it has the new intelligreen pro for the course which sounds like it will be helpful. Also on skycaddie it has something called Stone Canyon (short range) do you have any idea what that is? Do they have a short course too?

No short course at Stone Canyon - not sure what that means on the SkyCaddie website. As far as the courses go - Adams Pointe is a great track that always seems to be in good shape. Not too many places to get into trouble, but if you really try, you'll find some. Stone Canyon will NOT go private next year. Very very nice track for it only being open this season. Aesthetically, you can't really tell you're on a landfill, but there's not too much development around the course - pretty blah. Greens are definitely this course's defense. If you aren't on the right spot on the green, you can have a really tough put, or end up off the green completely.

I know you said you already committed, but Creekmoor really is a gem. If you'd like a really challenging course, you should check it out. Nasty, nasty rough, long holes (2nd longest par 5 in the nation when it was built - don't remember exactly what hole), excellent clubhouse amenities. One of the toughest in KC, in my opinion.

Good luck, and have fun in KC!!

The par 5 at Creekmoor you are referencing is probably #9. 650 yards straight into the prevailing south wind...and if that's not nasty enough, you really can't / shouldn't hit driver off the tee due to a pond that comes into play if you are a fairly long hitter.

They are not building a "short course" at stone canyon. The only guess, and it's a real stretch, is that maybe they marked the range and the "member's short game 'hole'" at the far end of the range. The best tee shot at Stone Canyon you won't see unless looking for it - #12. When you come off 11 green driving to 12 tee, you should see a small teebox mowed on the right of the path by the edge of the ravine. They won't have tee markers there....give it a poke from there anyway to force a much more interesting canyon carry....

You got it ez - couldn't remember if it was #8 or #9 at Creekmoor. Some real unexpected views at Stone Canyon, as you mentioned.
