Depends on your budget, but check out Lansdowne Golf Resort or Rasberry Falls. Or if you know anybody at Burning Tree, one of the best private courses out there. Both the courses I mentioned are about 15-20 minutes down route 7.

Both Lansdown and Rasberry Falls are great choices. I'd also add Westfields (Fred Couples design) and Laurel Hill on the Virginia side. Plenty on the MD side as well especially up I-270 -- my favorite there would be Whiskey Creek (Erinie Els design).

If you can play any of the above... you will NOT be disapointed! I have played all of the above except Whiskey. They are all kind of different layouts. Landsdowne is I believe a Rees Jones Course and is pretty open and long. Raspberry was designed by Gary Player and is a true links style golf course (watch out of the bunkers). Westfields is one of my favorites. Its a great mix of hole lenths and challenges with some blind tee shots and forced carries. Laurel Hill is also an excellent track. It is long and meanders through a track of land that was part of a jail. There are a lot of cool views and plenty of challenges there. You really can't go wrong with any of these!

Westfields is probably the easiest to get to from Tysons. There are so many realy nice courses in this area, I play about 20 of them. Use caution if headed towards the city though, traffic is horrible now. West is the easiest direction to go during the morning and early afternoon.

Heading up to Frederick you also have Md. National, Musket Ridge and PB Dye. All of the above are good choices . One of my favorites is Blue Ridge Shadows in Front Royal right down 66 from you. One of the best and rated high for value.

dr, any one these courses mentoned will be a very good experiencce for you. They are all in the upscale daily fee category. If I had to list a top 3 of the bunch they wuold be.

1) Westfields about 20 minutes or so west of Tysons.
2) Whiskey Creek about 35 to 45 minutes north or Tysons on I-270
3) Laurel Hills about 20 minutes or so south a couple miles off I-95.

If you visit the website to each one you'll get a pretty good idea of what they offer.

Wish I could join, you but I'll be tied up all day in a meeting.

You'll enjoy it. One hint. don't be freaked out by the stone house in the middle of the fairway on No. 18. Just do what I have no problem doing, Aim dead center of the fairway and you're sure to miss it smile.gif

Enjoy the round!!

No way you want to drive to Frederick from Tyson's. Unless you leave at between 11am-2pm, traffic will be a PITA. Stick with Raspberry Falls, Whiskey Creek is nicer but not worth the extra commute.

Thanks for all the help guys , Whisky Creek($57) was the course of choice just want to say I played one of Ernie’s tracks but when I called they had a tournament on , so next was Freddy’s, Westfield’s , played 18 there today, a little $$$ for this time of year at $89, but it was a real nice track, there are some long holes there with the wet grounds , thank good the flat stick was working , shot a respectable 88, so can go back to the frozen tundra tomorrow happy

Hit them straight

Thanks

Dave

Dave, too bad about Whiskey. Not a bad back up in Westfields. I am surprised at that rate for this time of year, almost every other course in the area has gone to winter rates with anything higher than $65 very unusual.

You're right about the length, did you tackle the Boom Boom tees smile.gif 88 on that course in wet conditions with the wind and cold we had yesterday is very good. Sorry you didn't have a bit better weather, as it seemed cooler and windier yesterday than the original forecasts called for. But that's our weather guys around here, they never get it right!!

Let us know if you're ever back in the area.

Haven't played it yet, but I hear that Lake Presidential in Upper Marlboro MD is very good as well. Hopefully before it stays cold, I can get out there!

all great choices pointed out up there, also if you have another day with less time, you can quickly get to falls road for just 9 holes for something like 28$? walking... easy and very close right over the border in maryland (googl/y/bing maps are your friend).
skip reston national it is always crowded and expensive.

T, I played it maybe 4 times or so the year it opened. Maybe things have improved but I was not blown away. It is a pretty nice layout, but the conditions were very spotty to be kind. Maybe they have solved some of the problems, such as a hole location on No. 5 that gets very little air and natural light. Each time we were there, that green was almost completely dead. The fairway on that hole was pretty bad as well. There are a couple almost gimmicky holes on the back nine, Ok either gimmicky or just downright near impossible.

I think it's hole 13 could be 14, can't really remember that has a very narrow fairway that slopes left to right. I comes to an end somewhere around 240 or so then you have any where from a 160 to 180 yard carry over a ravine to an elevated green. If you lay back with a hybrid or 3 wood to stay in the fairway then you risk having a 200 yard shot at that green.

Anyway, some will say they love it, and the facilities, clubhouse, range putting green etc are all very nice. But too many other choices in my book that are better for the money.

I thought lake presidential was private? Hmmm...maybe I'll try playing there if they allow the public to play there. I'm from PG county in MD, close to college park, so it shouldnt be too much of a drive for me smile.gif

I played LP a few times with clients when I was in the DC area on business. Service and conditions were pretty good, but there are a few holes that require near perfect execution. The 13th or 14th that the other poster references is impossible. Very narrow landing area on your drive and about a 200 yard approach over the water to an elevated (and severely sloped) green, with a lake on the right side of the green. I play to a 5.8 index and have a double and triple recorded for that one. The triple was "playing it safe" russian_roulette.gif . Curious to know how the locals play that one...

Very good question, I'll be interested to here some answers to that.

As a 16 HC, I felt over matched on that hole. I had to play it 3 times in one day when we played a 54 hole solstice tournament there about a month after it opened. I'm not ashamed to say I went 8,7,7. I'm glad to hear you chime in on it, I felt stupid one time when I was in the right rough about 190 out and chipped out almost straight sideways, as I knew I had no chance to carry that ravine from the rough.

falls road is absolutely terrible. its wayyy overpriced b/c its in potomac, and as the most used golf course in moco, it definitely shows. for the same or less $$$ you can drive 15 minutes away to hampshire greens montgomery county's signature course. runs through a housing development, but its so much better.
