This time of year in the Midwest is always depressing because the falling leaves and temps signal that the end of the golf season is near. I played in weather that was 40 to 45 degrees over the past few days and I was freezing. I tried an Under Armour Cold Gear shirts as a base layer with a sweater and a wind shirt and I was still cold. I hear a lot of talk about Under Armour Cold Gear tight fitting compression shirts being so good for keeping you warm, but it doesn't seem to work for me. The material even seems to get cold against my skin. I've used them for skiing and they seem to work fine. I'm wondering if they only work when you are doing something more active like running, hiking, skiing, etc., because you are generating heat and this material will hold that in, but if you are playing golf using a cart where you are riding most of the time and just get out to hit the ball it just doesn't do the trick. (Maybe they work if you walk but the course that I play most of the time is very spread out and to keep the speed of play up they don't allow walkers)
I intend to keep playing this year until the course is covered with snow. Please give me your best solution for keeping warm playing winter golf in the Midwest.

You probably need to cover your legs and head better. Long underware and a fleece ski type hat/beanie. Under Armour and Titleist make good ones.

I'm in Omaha and we're seeing the same thing.
I've played many rounds on semi-frozen turf with high 30's or low 40's as the temp. I've never tried the compression gear, but I hear they work well. Couple things I've noticed that have helped me:
- Walk the course - Completely helps to keep the body active and warm.
- Wear layers - long sleve shirt, polo shirt, fleece pull-over, etc...
- Wear gloves, a hat, ear muffs - I find that the hands and ears are the first thing to get cold...if that happens, it's a miserable experience
Now...I'm getting older...so I don't know if I'll still have the stomach to walk 18 holes in cold temperatures...but we'll see...

What I do (although I walk usually) is Under Armour, a long sleeve tee shirt (sometimes) a golf shirt and a vest (or SS wind shirt). I have always felt that if my core was warm, my arms didnt get as cold. Also, winter gloves between shots with handwarmers in them. I know you cannot have a hand warmer in a pocket with a ball, but I dont think hand warmers in general are illegal. I also usually wear a winter hat over my golf hat to keep my ears warm.
Finally, since I dont have rain gear, I wear under armour cold gear on my bottom as well under my golf pants, and sometimes an extra pair of tall socks. Sounds like a lot of clothes now that I say it all, but I would do anything to continue playing

I'm a little strange in the fact that I wear shorts. Yes, all year. Doesn't matter the weather. However my feet and hands must stay warm, and dry. I usually will wear UA gear under my polo, and a jacket on top of that. but I wear gloves on both hands, and use mittens with hand warmers in them. Other than that I'm good. Oh, and I walk as well since it seems to help keep the blood flowing to all my extremities.

I tend to only walk once it gets cold. If you're in a cart, get a windshield (or even saran wrap works which I've used on rainy days

)and a little propane heater that can go in one of the cup holders. Coleman actually makes a golf cart heater. You can get a full cart cover for $100-200 that you can throw on before the round.

I use the UA winter gear and sweat my butt off. Maybe because I walk I am not sure. I also wear the LL Bean lined pants they work well too.
Good Luck!

Do not rid in a cart. Walk. Always walk.

Agreed, I just wear my rain pants to block the wind and also a fleece Titleist hat which is very warm. Played in 43 degree temp yesterday no problem. Make sure your sweater is wool as well, cotton doesnt do much.

I just got in from 18 and the temp was 41F. UA cold gear pants and shirt, FootJoy rainpants, gols shirt and golf fleece pullover.....by the 4th hole I was almost sweating.....
But I agree with other posts...You have to walk!!!

Instead of the full cart enclosure, get a
GolfShield. They are portable, easy to use, inexpensive and work great!

Being from Wisconsin, dealing with cold is a way of life, so Im probably more used to cold than some of the rest of you, but honestly, other than wearing a sweatshirt, sweater or sweatervest I dont do anything special to keep warm.
I dont need a jacket or beanie until the temps get below 30* and at those temps the courses arent open anyways, so its not much of a concern to me.

I got out too, yesterday. Snow on Monday, and playing Wed. Only in MN!!!
I wasn't cold in the slightest. Played all right too.
BTW, where do you play out of?

I just use a lot of layers but no special under armor stuff. Last weekend it was pretty cold and all I wore was a short sleeve tee shirt, UA short sleeve golf shirt, a sleeveless fleece and an UA windbreaker. I was fine. It was 38 or 39 when I teed off...

Nike thermafit fleece - you can usually find some really flexible and warm shirts made out of this. I usually wear thermafit with a windbreaker over and keep my ears and hands warm. I never ride in a cart though, so you may need extra protection.

If it's not windy, I'll play down to about 40 degrees, otherwise 50 is the cutoff. In the 40s, I'll typically wear a long sleeve polo shirt under a zip-up fleece thing, thick cotton or corduroy pants, and occasionally a knit hat (I think its officially called a "tuque").

Cart cover and heater is the way to go. With that setup, inside the cart is 75 degrees (when it's 40 or less outside). I usually just wear a, long sleeve undershirt shirt, golf shirt, then a short sleeve wind breaker. Plenty warm.

Played Tuesday...38, sunny and a tad bit windy. Always walk. No one has mentioned the feet so I'll start there. Depending on how cold it is, I'll start with a lightweight wicking layer and put a pair of ski sox over the top of those. You have to be careful though because walking will make your feet sweat. A layer of UA long johns with pants over them and if it's windy, wind pants. The top is a UA Coldgear base layer, a UA fleece lined top and if it's windy, a wind shirt. Definitely need a stocking cap to keep the heat in. Other than a golf glove, I don't need anything for the hands. Usually by the second hole, I'm warm and toasty. We've played down to 25 degrees in that combination as long as it's not windy and there's sunshine, we're warm.
And don't forget, walk.

BTW...I've always heard that playing in temperatures below 40* puts graphite shafts at more risk...
Is this true?
Just something I've been thinking about when I play in colder weather.

During the winter months if there is no snow and over 35 there is a small group who walk in the am , i normally wear long john bottoms under my dockers and a turtle neck and a sleeveless vest, sweatshirt and windbreaker and for a hat a tossle cap and i seem to do fine walking , as for the hands a dont care for winter gloves so a use regular golf gloves and they work fine , when the sun is out 40 is suprisingly warm for febuary/march , i just try to move a little quicker

Jameson and diet cola usually do the trick for me, maybe some under armour or a similar product if it's especially frosty.
