Hi everyone,

Heading to Tucson for some work in a couple of weeks and looking to play a round of golf. Curious if there are any recommendations of where to play. The foursome is not highly skilled, ranging from 10 to 20 HCAP.

Looking for something in the $100 or less range. We have looked at Arizona National.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Arizona National is a great course, but I would strongly recomend you look into Del Lago Golf course in Vail. Just 2 miles East of Tucson. Great course and usually you can get on for about $60 per person. Starr Pass is also good. For a treat you can drive 40 minutes south to Tubac and play the course where they filmed Tin Cup. It has 27 holes and you can also get on there for under $60. Good luck and have some fun. Great time of the year to be in Tucson.

For many courses in the Arizona desert, it is overseed time.

Two things:
- Quite a few of the upscale courses have bent greens, in which case there is not so much concern about the overseed.
- Courses with bermuda greens will be coming out of the rye grow-in and conditions could be spotty.

Check with the course to determine if the greens are overseeded and when they started. Look for courses with no less than 4 weeks growth.

Lot of golf in Tucson.

Most of the upscale places are the desert target style golf courses. Set in the foothills north of town, spectacular desert scenery but an unforgiving environment if you spray the ball out of the turf areas. You can still have fun if you take advantage of the generosity of the "desert rule" where the natural areas are treated like lateral hazards.

I don't know if the current rates at any of these places would fit your budget, but the upscale places naturally command the higher fees. Az National was mentioned, also Vistoso has been recommended by others as a little more forgiving desert layout.

For a more traditional tree lined and mostly grass layout, check out the Tucson National (original 18 called the Catalina course) Former home of the PGA Tucson event.

For good golf at bargain rate, the city of Tucson 36-hole Randolph Park complex offers a traditional golf, fun layouts, core routings, totally walkable, not plush but above average muni conditions.

I recently was able to play the RitzCarlton Dove Mountain course. That's one tough SOB.

Enjoy your visit!

Starr Pass is also good.

+1

Played this and the municipal track previously mentioned in 2003. The muni is nice but Starr Pass was exactly the "desert-type" of course that I was looking to play while there.

IMO, Vistoso, both courses at Ventana Canyon, and both courses at the Gallery are all vastly superior to Starr Pass. Not sure if any of these can be had for under $100 though.

I've played Tucson Natinal over 50 times. Great mix of desert and non-desert golf... and it was always fun.

My favorites:
Vistoso
The Gallery
Ventana Canyon

I know this is an older thread but I am going to Tucson next week and am playing these courses:

Poston butte on my way down to Tucson from Phoenix

49er club - A friend of mine is a member

Vistoso and I need a recommendation for one more round. I was leaning towards Arizona National but you can get a pretty good deal at Arizona National, Tucson National, Starr Pass or Ventena Canyon on Golf Now (All for under $60)

Which one do you guys recommend?

+1. I can't compare Del Lago to other courses in the area, but I thought it was a very good course for the price. I enjoyed my experience there and the price was reasonable.
