Question for something that happened to me yesterday. Par 3 and I hit a 7 iron that came down beautifully about 10 past the hole but online. I was hoping for a little roll back but this didn't happen as my ball was plugged on the green. It was early and they were pretty soft. . I marked my ball, but the ball mark was pretty deep and needed some serious landscaping. Can I move my mark again, make the repair and the replace the mark? This is what I did and still wound up with a less than stellar lie for my putt. Was this correct?

yeah what you did is the correct way.

So if the ball is plugged on the green, you are supposed to putt exactly where the ball was plugged?
Cobber
That was kind of the issue at hand. The repair was pretty evasive and the new Lie was still less than ideal... a slight recess. Made par.

I had a similar thing happen, only is was not on the green, about 5 feet off of it. Hit a wedge and the ball plugged in the pitch mark with only about the top 1/3 showing. What do you do then, play it as it lies or take out of pitch mark?

25-2. Embedded Ball
A ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the course through the green. "Closely mown area" means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

Embedded ball rule does not apply here. The appropriate rules in this situation are 16-1b & 16-1c:

b. Lifting and Cleaning Ball

A ball on the putting green may be lifted and, if desired, cleaned. The position of the ball must be marked before it is lifted and the ball must be replaced (see Rule 20-1).

c. Repair of Hole Plugs, Ball Marks and Other Damage

The player may repair an old hole plug or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball, whether or not the player’s ball lies on the putting green. If a ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved in the process of the repair, the ball or ball-marker must be replaced. There is no penalty, provided the movement of the ball or ball-marker is directly attributable to the specific act of repairing an old hole plug or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball. Otherwise, Rule 18 applies. Any other damage to the putting green must not be repaired if it might assist the player in his subsequent play of the hole."
