I am going to Indianapolis in a few weeks, and can't figure out which course to play on Sunday. We are playing Bear Slide on Saturday. Everyone I have talked to seems to love that course, and recommends that one. Unfortunately Brickyard has an outing that day, otherwise this decision would be easy. So for now, I am stuck between Prairie View, Purgatory, and The Fort. All things being equal (tee time, price, etc) which of the 3 would you guys suggest, and why? Also, which is the best "conditioned" course in your opinion. Thanks

I have not played Prairie View, but I would definitely pick The Fort over Purgatory. The Fort is one of my all-time favorite courses. I just played there last week, and it was in pretty good shape. The Fort is on a beautiful piece of property with dramatic elevation changes. It is, I feel, a superb routing, and, best of all, no houses on the course.

I have played all the course that you are asking about and will give you my insight.

Prairie View: Very nice and in great shape, the staff will treat you well. Links type with some tradition holes. Gets alot of praise, but something about it doesn't make me like it that much with the highest green fee in the area.

Purgatory: A links still course that is always in great shape. Pick the right set of tees and you will have fun day. Lost of sand and usually tall heather grass outside the fairway, keeping it in the fairway is a must. Great practice area.

The Fort: My favorite course in the Indy area, I used to live close to it and played it alot. I have not played there this year, so I can't commit on the condition, but usually good. Well it's inside a state park and will have lots of trees and elevation changes with some links style holes. If the the leafs start to change colors you will have some beatiful view. I really enjoy this type of course, so I am baised toward it.

Brickyard is a great course, might see if you can get on Saturday and play one of the others on Sunday.

I guess it depends on the type of course you like to play, but my choice would be in this order: The Fort, Purgatory and Prairie View.

They are all nice and you should have a good time.
BEND OF THE RIVER GC
Fort or PRairie View = toss up.

Then Purgatory. IMO a bit overrated as well, but worth playing once.

I used to live in Indy and have played all of those courses. This will sound like a cop-out, but you really can't go wrong. Bear Slide, The Fort, Purgatory, and Prarie View are all great. They are all comparable. For that reason, you should probably not choose Prarie View because it's high price is based on it's location. It is not really superior to the others. The Brickyard has incredible conditioning, but that's all it has over the others. If you like elevation change, go with The Fort. Trust me, you will not be disappointed with whatever you choose. Indy has other great courses as well.
