There isn't much in your immediate area (Dunwoody / Sandy Springs) but if you work in Tucker, check out the Stone Mountain courses which are not far. 36 quite good holes there, just try to play either very early or very late as pace of play can sometimes be an issue. If you can make putts on Stonemont's greens then you can roll the rock - those greens are really tough! Lakemont is not nearly as difficult, but has some great views of the lake and the mountain. Good golf courses, terrible practice facility.
Even closer to Tucker is Smoke Rise which is a pretty good private course, not sure if they are still allowing public play. They out-kicked their coverage a bit with a new clubhouse and so forth and had to start allowing some public play to pay the bills. The course is pretty good, lots of elevation changes and sharp doglegs. Condition varies tremendously.

Smoke Rise was recently acquired by the Canongate group. Joining Canongate may be of interest to you ( I am a member). Over 20 courses in the group and most are excellent. Not too far away from Dunwoody, some courses up the 400 corridor include Hamilton Mill, Windermere and Olde Atlanta. And now Smoke Rise isn't too far away. Check it out at
www.canongategolf.com Click on locations on the top left menu and scroll down the page for a map showing all couse locations.

Smoke Rise still offers public play, you can call the club house or book through Golfnow.com; it's not a bad course.
RiverPines has one of the best public practice facilities on the N.E side of Atlanta. It's off of Old Alabama up Hwy 141. You should be
Celebrity is also in Tucker off of Britt Rd. but Julias Erving "Dr. J" is a little proud of his course compared to some of the other courses around.

thanks!
checked out the webpages and stone mountain and river pines seem to be decent and not too expensive. still a little bit diappointed that theres not more to offer..
yesterday i was searching for a good golf store where i could get a fitting as well..it seems like about 3-5 shops (pga, edwin watts ..) closed down and i drove around for two hours with directions not finding anything useful, since google still showed the adresses..so i dont even have an idea where to get that, since i dont want to drive 30 miles just for that.

I just came from a golf trip to the area around Lake Oconee and I fell in love with Long Shadow golf course at Madison, it's a true gem for very little. Also Cherokee Run in Conyers is one I really loved too. CR is the type of course that I could play everyday without getting bored.

PGA Superstore located apprx 1 mile off Hwy 400 at Holcomb Bridge Rd (exit 7), not far from Dunwoody at all. Just head up 400 N from 285.

Well, it is sad, but 30 min is not a long drive in Atlanta. The place is REALLY spread out and traffic is horrible, but you know that by now. Cherokee Run and Long Shadow and Smoke Rise are very good and not far from you. Stone Mountain can be either great or a real pain if crowded. Drive up I-85 and you can hit Chateau Elan, which has a fantastic practice facility (the range is nicer than most courses and the short game area is huge...and free) and three good courses. It is a resort and the level of service is very high for the $.

Not sure where you are in Dunwoody, but there is a range up off Roswell Rd called Blue Hering. It also has a little par 3 course attached to it. I used to work there when I lived in Dunwoody for some extra cash. There is alway the crazy drivign range off of 85 and Northcrest. I think it actually has grass too.
I work in Tucker myself, there is not much around. The Dr. J course is old HEritage, I have vowed to never play there again. The only thing it has or had going was the hot sisters that worked at the bar.
Check out LMTT.com for courses around, it's a pretty good offering.
