I got to thinking today when I was watching the PGA about the pros and their shoes. Everywhere I play, there are no metal spikes allowed, only soft-spikes. So I just started wondering. rolleyes.gif

Probably a few die-hards. I'd imagine a good percentage have switched (75%+)

I know Charley Hoffman does. I walked with him at Riviera and he was definitely crunching the concrete when he crossed.

Tiger does, Phil does, not sure who else

A bunch do. I would guess at least 75%. Why would anyone NOT wear metal?

I wear the metal spikes too (Pro Stingers). You just have to be careful to not walk in the clubhouse or on the cart path and bring a bunch of attention to it.

If you don't drag your feet, they are actually much better for the greens than the plastic.

This is actually true.

I just got back into golf after an 11 year layoff and have noted a lot of changes in nearly everything. One of things I thought I was seeing was the pros wearing soft spikes. I guess I was wrong. With that said, I'm not really seeing spike marks on the greens on TV. Whenever they replay scenes from the 90's (like Crenshaw's last Masters win) the spike marks look like a minefield, and I don't think I'm seeing that now.

+1 on the pro stingers.  At the SHO, I heard paddy's spikes crunching on his way to the range.

On at least some courses, I have seen Phil wearing softspikes. He wears those black/gold models.

A large majority of pros wear soft spikes. There are still some old school holdouts like Tiger with metal spikes.

Contrary to the opinion expressed above, metal spikes are destructive to greens--regardless of foot dragging. We are all better off for the advent of soft spikes.

Wear what you want, just please refrain from the golf sandals!

I was curious about this as well, Based on my observations at the Masters where I spent about half a day sitting behind a tee box and watching players and as a marshall at the AT&T where I was working the tee box and got a good look at nearly every pro's spikes on their follow through I would say about 75% wear soft spikes. It kind of surprised me. Tiger has metal spikes as does Phil but most of the rest wear soft spikes.
