Besides being about three hours from Bandon Dunes and a college town with an open mind to alternative ideas, what's Eugene like? Real estate, golf in the immediate area, membership at the Eugene Country Club, etc? Thanks for any feedback.

Not a resident, but my wife and I absolutely loved it there last year on our honeymoon. I didn't play any golf so I can't comment on that, but I am definitely bringing the clubs when we go back. Just a great town from what we could see.

I live in Portland but travel to Eugene a few times a year for Duck football and work.
Beautiful city...just stay away from Springfield(meth).

Used to live in Eugene. It's a pretty nice place. Good proximity to the coast, the mountains, the desert, etc. Duck football games are great. The two knocks against it in my mind are the food and golf. There is just not much there by way of good restaurants, although there are quite a few good Thai places. While Oregon in general has fantastic golf, local golf around Eugene is not great in my opinion. Eugene CC is incredibly overrated (IMO). For the price, I would much rather be out at Shadow Hills. There is incredible golf a few hours away in Bandon and Bend though, that I think makes up for the lack of excellent local golf options. There is also some good golf about an hour away at Tokatee in Blue River and Sand Pines in Florence. All in all, Eugene is pretty good. However, it is very different from Marin County. I would certainly make a few trips to visit Eugene before making a move.

I start school at the University of Oregon (in Eugene) in about a month. I plan on playing for the club golf team, so I'll learn a lot about the surrounding courses soon enough and can pass along any worthwhile information I pick up along the way.
