Looks like I will be in the Charleston area for a long weekend and was thinking about doing a 1-night stay at the Sanctuary to play the Ocean course while the wife is at the spa.

I checked the average temperature and it's between 41 and 62, but was more interested in how the course conditions might be. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks. What about the actual course conditions?

The course should be in good shape. Definitely not tournament caliber, maybe shaggy in spots and the rough may be dormant that time of year. As previously mentioned, very windy!! Bring lots of balls. I had a friend (local professional) play there in Feb and he lost over a dozen balls and shot 86. Said it was the hardest course he has ever played bar none...Good Luck!!

Thanks for the reply. Still up in the air, but that's what I'm leaning towards (assuming I bring my sticks).

You really aren't going to have a bad month to play golf in Charleston....so long as you book your tee time late enough to accomodate whatever the temps are actually going to be the week you're here. December is a month that can go either way - it can feel like late Spring in the afternoon and you'll be in shorts or it can be rainy and in the 40's. Last Christmas day for instance, it was so nice we took the dogs to the beach at Isle of Palms and we had on shorts. We don't get a hard freeze here so it's entirely possible the turf may not be dormant yet as we don't get our coldest weather until late January/early February. I'd roll the dice and come on down, most likely you'll get a nice day to play.

You live in Pennsylvania, so I'll promise you that it'll be better weather at Kiawah than up in PA at that time of year! I lived in Charleston for 7 years, moved away from there last summer. 2 years ago, I played golf on my birthday, December 14, in short sleeves and it was 75 degrees that day. In December of 2008, I played a scramble tourney on the Ocean Course, and it was GORGEOUS: 70 degrees, only 5-10 mph winds, the course played as easy as it could play. However, just like generalpatton said, you could get a colder day, but I think your chances would be better for good weather in December than in January or February. From what I remember of the conditions, the rough wasn't completely dormant, and the greens were rolling very nicely as you would expect for a course of that caliber.

Finally, if you're on the fence about playing, take a look at the picture I'm attaching, it's from behind the 4th green looking back towards the tee. Sorry about the size of the picture, but I didn't want to alter it. I rotate this picture along with a picture of Cypress Point as my computer backgrounds, it's so pretty. Have a great time there!

You have to go. Take the story I'm about to tell you as motivation.

I was suppose to go to Kiawah this Saturday for a week and play all the resort courses, ocean included. My grandpa has been submitted to a hospice and wont last long. I fly back to WI two days ago and spent the last 34 of 48 hours next to him in the hosiptal. I'm typing from the hospital.

I'm not going next week although I'm not bitter. I am where I want and need to be. I just dont want you to miss the chance.

Good luck, regardless of the weather - hit'em long and straight.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Sorry to hear about your grandfather, bhauch. I unfortunately remember what that was like.

If I end up going on this trip, I'll definitely be going and I assure you that I'll have pics.

If any fellow Wrx'ers are in the area and want to play please let me know.

Should be no worries at all for a December round. I played 12/2007 and the weather and conditions were fantastic. Got a little windy on the back, but I found the hardest part was the greens!
