Decision 14-3/0.5 allows a Committee to permit the use of golf GPS and golf range finders by Local Rule. This applies to devices that measure distance only, not any other conditions that might affect a player's play (e.g., wind or gradient). In the absence of such a Local Rule, the use of a golf GPS or golf range finder remains contrary to the Rules.

As I understand it, devices such as range finders that have slope options are not allowed even if that option is not used or turned off. Does this mean that since some iPhone GPS apps have the ability to suggest clubs for distances that even if that app is not installed that iPhones cannot be used as a GPS device in competition in which GPS are allowed by the committee?

iPhone has internet access, so it's not legal.

Where in the rules would it state that this is not legal? I have heard people state this, but have never seen it myself.

Most committees will not allow internet access or even cell phones turned "on".
