i normally use a towel i got off of vokey.com, its 24x48. the gatorade towels work for me too, they can be found pretty cheap on eastbay.
on a side note, i am trying to find blank 24x48 towels to screenprint our schools logo on but none of the sites i have googled will let me order them (site messed up, incorrect links).

Do you ever stay in hotels? They make great towels.

Locker room at the country club make great towels and then just cut them down to size. 26"/48" is the best size.

For the cheapos out there (that don't acquire them for free somehow) - 1) if you have one near you, try IKEA. They have some towels that are about halfway in size between a bath towel and a hand towel that are great, although the colors are bright (yellow, orange, brilliant green, red) - good thing about that is you know its yours. 2) Wal-Mart has some that are about the same size, but are slightly thinner and come in more muted colors.
Both go for about $1.50 a pop. They are inexpensive enough to use to stock up and if you lose one its no big deal.
They do not, however, sport the grommet/hook to attach to your bag, or a stylish manufacturer/cool course logo.
