Watson's adventure at Turnberry this year was a major boost for the game of golf. He not only showed how the game should be played - he showed us how to behave properly. His graciousness and dignity when he must have been seriously upset were instructive - a perfect role model. It shows why golf stands out from other sports. It is the way golfers are supposed to behave. Golfers could act like in an undignified, childish way - and some who have not thought it through do. However, those unevolved lads are the exception rather than the rule.
Other sports think it is ok to walk around shouting, spitting and acting like surly children. Unimpressive.
It is too bad that he did not win. If that 8-iron to the 72nd green had stayed on the green I think he would have won.
The other thing that Mr. Watson showed us is that golf is truly the game of a lifetime. What other sport could have a 59 year old be at the top of the pack?
Thanks Tom.
