I'm going to be in Phoenix in August and I was suprised to see that 1) tee times are available for the day I will be out there, and 2) It's only $71 to play early in the morning! That being said, anybody played it? Is it worth it to stay an extra day on my business trip to play it? Is there something better I should play while out there?

Nope...the only reason to play there is to be able to say that you played it.

Can't go wrong with any of these:

Troon North
Grayhawk
We-Ko-Pa
Sunridge Canyon

I've read that a couple of places now, what is it people don't like about it? By the way, I'm in the Nashville area as well!

The Stadium Course isn't bad but it's your typical desert course. If you don't play a lot of desert courses, it'll probably be real fun. I agree that you should play it to say you've played a PGA Tour course. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Never played a desert course, so I'm sure I'll think it's the coolest thing ever.

If you want to play one course and experience true desert golf in it's glory, with views of the surrounding mountain terrain uninterrupted by housing development, a course that is challenging but fair, FUN, whimsical and quirky, and tests every club in your bag...

We-Ko-Pa Saguaro course.

If you want to play a course that gets played by the PGA Tour, then the TPC Stadium will fit the bill.

Bring water!

TPC Stadium....if you could just play 15 through 18 four times it would be great...your scores would be great ,too!

The Desert Course next door is a bore as well. A LOT of MUCH better courses in the area...We Ko Pa Saguaro is one of them...

Good luck - Ben.

TPC Stadium not a bad course, but it's just that there are much better.

It's not what I would call a "typical" desert course either. The Stadium course was totally manufactured with a bulldozer and any/all desert vegetation was planted after the fact. Again, not necessarily a bad thing per se, but if you are interested in playing a course in a natural setting, with a routing and design that was fit into the terrain and makes use of the land forms and features available, then my recommendation would be WKP Saguaro.

Everyone has different motivations and tastes, but I think the TPC Stadium is a course that could literally be anywhere, while Saguaro will give you a uniquely Sonoran desert experience.

Where ever you choose, enjoy your visit to Arizona. It will be HOT! Early AM tee time is recommended, drink plenty of water - save the beer for post round.

We Ko Pa - will have to play here

What other courses do you recommend?

Take a "desert club". An old 6, or 7 iron to hit out of the rocks.

Some of my other favorites in the greater Phoenix area

Vista Verde - way NE Scottsdale/Tonto Verde area
Check out my review with a few pics: http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234271

The Raven @ Verrado - Buckeye (Fought & Lehman) - fun course with a tremendous variety of holes that use the natural features of the site. Although a real estate course, the playing corridors are quite wide and the housing is not intrusive.

Sun Ridge Canyon - Fountain Hills (Keith Foster) also a real estate course but a challenging and very interesting layout.

Los Caballeros - Wickenberg (Hardin/Nash) A bit of a drive, but a superb lay of the land setting with great greens.

With probably 200+ courses to choose from, it will take a while to check them all out!

Here is another thread with a lot of info:

Enjoy!!

Wasn't there a course out there that used to be Lefty's home course?
