Hey All,

A few of my friends are planning a trip to Montauk Downs in September. We are debating between going to Montauk or Maine.
We've been to Maine and it was absolutely amazing. Some of the nicest, cheapest courses I have played...ever.

My vote is for Maine.

Who out there has played Montauk Downs? Is it worth it? I have a feeling its going to be over-rated.
Is it an A- or A course? Or more in the B+ - B range?

I play Montauk all the time and it's in the best shape I think I've ever seen it. I think it's an A. New back tees have stretched it out and the wind always makes it interesting. They do tend to aerate in early Sept so you may want to call and ask what the schedule is. Of course, Maine is a great option as well.

thanks for the response. Much appreciated

I'm actually playing there this Friday. It is a great course and it's very tough. Just don't over-hype it. I've never played up in Maine so I can't help you there. Montauk is a great town too. Very unlike the rest of the Hamptons - more laid back and more fun.

we are looking to get in 2 rounds if we go. Are there any other nice courses around there?

yes - unfortunately you wont be able to step foot on them (shinnecock, national, sebonac, maidstone). However, you will drive right past Shinnecock and you can drive through the course.

The best public course nearby is Long Island National in Riverhead. However, that is still at least an hour from Montauk WITHOUT traffic.
