hey all: What's the deal with sooooo many tour pro's now wearing under armour apparel? Is it because they have plenty of $$$ to sign players or just lookin to make a name for themselves? Also why do we see so many players wearing short sleeve polo's with long sleeve t shirts/compresion shirts under them and not the traditonal long sleeve polo's? Thanks for the info
jimmyjames
Their golf shirts are awful and pull way to easily. Not worth the $$$. Give me an Adidas Climacool polo over UA any day of the week. As far as the pro's wearing them it's all about the $$$$

j0npeterson
Hmm, odd. Most everyone I know that has worn any UA stuff has liked it. Myself included.

naples_golf
under armour is great stuff. i live in hot muggy weather and love under armour. as for tour players i bet they feel the same way.
raw10628
I love UA gear. I live in Houston and it is constant heat and humidity here. I wear their hunting and fishing gear too, and I have never been dissappointed with any of their products.
Imperium
I am a fan as well. UA or Adidas only for me.
bigdog2084
some of their compression shirts might not really be shirts. nike makes compression sleeves for golfers. all they do is cover your arms from hands to shoulders. i have a pair and they are great. i don't like wearing the compression shirts because they restrict my swing too much.
Sloth1098
I'm a fan as well -- shirts, shorts, socks -- even the boxers (try them, seriously)!!!
A bit off-topic, but anyone know who makes/owns UA? I bet they're behind only Nike and adidas in sportswear sales, but 5 years ago were unknown. SOMEONE is making some $$$$
blucky01
UA only sponsors one or two guys. The reality is the guys who wear it don't have clothing contracts and choose to wear UA because they like it and it's not clothing from a competing equipment company.

I know it's a privately owned company created in Baltimore, Maryland (hence the Terps being all decked out in UA gear)

The dude that started it played football for Maryland. He started it out of his basement. Don't recall the whole story, but that's the gist of it. Under Armour is top of the line.

Under Armour was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former football player for the University of Maryland, who was looking for an alternative to the heavy, sweat-drenched cotton T-shirt he wore under his football jersey. In his first year, 1996, Plank sold about $17,000 worth of items; in 2006, the company's revenue exceeded $467 million. Under Armour gained popularity with a 2002 commercial in which a muscle-bound football player implored teammates to "protect this house!" The catch-phrase became a rallying cry for athletes, including the Baltimore Ravens, and helped propel Under Armour into the big leagues of sportswear sales alongside Nike, Reebok and others. Under Armour became a publicly traded company in 2005 and is listed on the Nasdaq stock market. In 2007, Under Armour opened its first retail store, in Annapolis, Md.........GO TERPS

The owner played fullback at UMD. I went there a few years after he did but got to meet him a few times. He was a nice guy when I met him. He started the company out of his basement as said before and had some ugly first run logo's.
Greenie
Plank, a starter during kickoffs and punts, wondered why not gridiron T-shirts, too? He tore the content label off a pair of his wick-away shorts, bought the same material from a fabric store, and gave a tailor $460 to sew seven shirts. "I set out to build a better football undershirt," he says.Plank's teammates loved the tees. So he drove to New York's garment district, had hundreds more samples made, and dubbed his invention "Under Armour

+1 I love the stuff and it's held-up well.

Their compression shirts are great for cooler weather, allowing your muscles to perform more effectively.

I have been pleased with all of their products I have owned, although pricey and hard to find on sale.

I have seen more pros wearing UA, which all has to do with marketing budgets and availability of athletes. As some companies end their agreements, others gain more athletes. (Just saw Mark O'Meara sporting the UA logo).

I heard the founder wanted to call his product something like Body Armour, but could not get the naming rights. His brother, cousin or brother in-law suggested combining underwear with body armour, to form Under Armour. I heard the founder did not love the name, but Phil Knight didn't really love the Swoosh either at first.

Under Armour has teamed with GEAR FOR SPORTS to bring its innovative performance apparel to a wider range of athletes in the golf market. http://www.gearforsports.com/ua_golf.htm

under armour is fantastic. being from the east coast its one of the main sports brands alongside nike and adidas. its compression gear along with its loose gear is fantastic. i personally own so much UA stuff its kind of sick. from socks to underwear to undershirts its what i wear to the gym, playing sports and definitely on the golf course.

i know they sponsor a few tour guys, but i bet their are a lot of tour guys who use UA even without the endorsement contracts. they were the first to bring out compression gear and IMO still have the finest gear on the market. long gone are the bulky cotton long-sleeves and sweaters, more and more people have decided to go the UA route. true it might seem a bit restricting at first, but once you get used to the feel there really is nothing like it. try it, like it, love it...trust me.

Football stars like Jerry Rice, Jeff George, and Plank’s college teammate Frank Wycheck began regularly sporting his revolutionary athletic shirts: “We convinced these big tough football players to start wearing tight-fitting synthetic shirts, which was completely new and different.” 1 In addition to these players, big names in other sports, including all-pro baseball pitcher Roger Clemens, and slugger Barry Bonds fell in love with Under Armour as well. In fact, Bonds wore Under Armour during the entire 2001 MLB season, the season he became the new homerun king. This free form of advertisement brought Under Armour legitimacy and an authenticity that regular advertising never could. Young athletes all over the country and even across the globe who always looked up to these sports stars would now see that Under Armour logo on them. The ESPN series, Playmakers, gave Under Armour a lot of exposure by having the characters—professional football players on a fictional team—wear all Under Armour gear. The movie Any Given Sunday did the same. 6 The message that Plank was trying to get across was that Under Armour enhances performance—if important athletes were wearing Under Armour and were getting the most out of it then it must really help anyone perform at a higher level: “We don't pay athletes millions to wear our brand. We don't have to. Our model is getting to the athletes--supplying them with great product that helps them perform better.”

guys, UA is great, but hard to get in europe.

You really should take a look and see if you're close enough to one of their outlets. I have had pretty good luck getting their polos fairly cheap, in the $20 dollar range. And the local one sports some merchandise at full price, but it's in its own section and clearly marked as such.

There is a UA outlet near me in Pigeon Forge, TN. It just opened not too long ago and you can get some great deals in there. However, one word of caution! The sales guys will pressure you to buy all UA gear. I wore some Adidas tennis shoes in there and the first thing they said was "You need to ditch those Adidas shoes and get some UA shoes. Here let me show you!" I mean it was pretty bad. I basically had to tell them to can it or I'll walk! They shut up after that.

i got a pair of under armor golf shorts on clearance from golf galaxy and they are fantastic. I wish I could afford more of their stuff, but in the time being I'll keep on buying hte compression shirts from Target. They might not be the same, but very similar and about 1/4 of the cost

There are some outlets relatively close to where I live, I'll have to check to see if ua has an outlet there.

Not sure if they ship internationally, but eastbay.com has a lot of UnderArmour apparel. You can also find a lot of UA on eBay.

As a side note, UnderArmour went public about 5 years ago. Trading at $23.75 this morning. It was over $60 a in 2007.

I love their polos, I use them all the time. When it is hot and sticky out, these things keep you cool and dry no matter how much you sweat.

I have tried other moisture wicking polos from other manufactures, they are just don't have the same drying performance.

While my whole golf wardrobe is not all UA, whenever I see that it is going to be a hot muggy day, the UA polos are the first shirt I go for.

...and they are not that expensive, all the UA shirts I got were under $25. This first shirt I got from the UA outlet was $14!

A lot better than paying the $40+ on retail.

But since a lot of other manufactures are getting on the moisture wicking bandwagon, their are other options besides UA now. But in my opinion not quite as good.

Anybody tried the UA heat gear long sleeve/short sleeve/sleeveless in the high temps? I played last weekend with a sleeveless under my Ashworth AWS and it worked great even though the temp was 90, but my arms were cooking in the sun. I heard that the long sleeve heat gear shirts actually keep you cooler in the high temps as well as keeping your forearms from baking.
fore_life
I wear the long sleeve heat gear stuff and it really helps, especially if youre riding, the breeze from the cart feels like ac

I am sure they will, as they have their basketball shoes releasing this fall. (Now-running, cross training and basketball shoes) I would guess tennis next.

It would be a prime time for them for golf shoes with the popularity of the Performance Sport category.

Their golf glove fits nicely too, but the closure tab is a little awkward and of course they are pricey.

I'm pretty much a Nike Fit-Dry die hard, but I did wear a UA Heat Gear polo on the course for the first today and it was awesomely comfortable. It was only 102 today in Vegas though! I'll wear it next week when we're back to the 110s, and give the full review. russian_roulette.gif

Everything UA I've ever bought has been great and I've accumulated quite a few shirts and some shorts and underwear. Even picked up a pair of UA running shoes recently and they're awesome as well. If you're shopping for UA deals, take a look at GPP every now and then, I've picked up 5 UA polos from them over the past couple months and none have been over $30.

BTW, if you like the boxer jocks as I do, check out the new 2 packs. They changed them up a bit and made the material a bit lighter and improved the waistband. They're now perfect to wear all day long. I found the 2 packs at Dicks, not sure where else you can get them.

They will be bought out by Nike, only a matter of time.

I've switched to some Adidas boxer briefs that are moisture wicking but have a little more cotton feel to them.

Sounds like I'll need to try the new one's that generalpatton mentions above. I think what I didn't like about the one's I have is that they seem a little too thick.

I am a BIG fan of UA gear!!!! Most comfortable shirts ever when it is warm out. Their pants and shorts are top notch also!!! My local bricks and mortar golf shop sells ALL their clothing at 15 percent off list price so it isn't tooo bad. lol For cold weather I like to wear breath thermo long sleeve shirts from mizuno... you can usually pick them pretty cheap at gppgolf or rockbottom for 20.00 or less?

Really? I doubt that since the "swoosh" is in the same area as UA, Adidas, whoever. It's understood that taking out competition is nice. However, said competition keeps the product up.

Not to mention, with a name like "BigSwooshDuffer" makes me wonder if you're not scared someone else is making very good apparel for any and all sports.

Note: That is not a flame, but his remark about being bought by Nike seems a little far fetched for the time being.
