My wife and I were married a month ago. We have been playing tennis together for about a year now. I wanted to include her in one of my hobby/activities and chose not to do golf. I though it would be harder for her to learn compared to tennis and obviously is more expensive. I took her to the range and gave her a few swing thoughts before I let her hit. She hit a 7 iron about 110yds, a 5 wood about 150yds, and a driver about 176yds. A few were straight, she didn't top the ball hardly at all, a lot did go to the right. Mostly from pulling the club inside and hitting it off the end of the toe. All in all I was impressed. I told her I'd get her a decent women's set and we'd hit up the par 3's.
We traveled to Ohio last week to see my relatives there since they couldn't make it to California for the wedding. I got a coupon to play my home course for $19 per person with a cart for 18 holes. It was so cheap I invited my wife to play. (Turns out the pro heard about our marriage and gifted us the rounds and some balls for my wife's temp. bag.)
I had her tee off at the red tee's for par 3's, 150yd stake for par4's and the 200yd marker for par 5's. She shot 110 with a few mulligans. She insisted on keeping score! Anyways, here's a shot of her swing at the top. Pretty good for a first timer.

Very Nice. While I Know we all like playing with "the guys" and all. It's nice to half a spouse who enjoys plays golf, as it will open up a whole new list of vacation destinations for you. Hopefully you two will play a lot, but that you'll still get in your regular rounds with the guys.

Tennis definitely helps golf. You need to turn the body to generate power etc ...
Yeah, great posture. She puts me into shame.
p.s. Why does the title say new wife? I thought it implied you had an old one ... Maybe it's just me.

I got what he meant after reading his post. That was my impression just by reading the headline.

+1 My wife and I recently celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. She took up the game when we started dating and our vacations have always included golf. Maui, Hilton Head, Orlando, Gulf Shores all included several rounds of golf. Our 13 yr old is now challenging his mom from the front tees!
Have fun and don't give her to many mulligans! She'll want to play for money next!

its great when the wife will go out for a round here and there. its just a shock sometimes when you pay that greens fee x 2.

Congratulations on the new marriage, it sure is nice when you have someone to share your life with, and even better when they golf! Now you can take vacations and not feel guilty playing golf and leaving her behind.
My wife is a golfer too. She is my favorite playing partner and I will abandon the boys to tee it up with her any chance I get. I love it when she beats me on a hole and gets excited about it.
Enjoy your time with your wife and remember to give her positive reinforcement any chance you can.

My wife took up the game after our third child was born. We are now empty nesters as the youngest is now off to college. My wife has become an avid golfer and we have enjoyed many golfing vacations over the years. She is a low mid 80's player and breaks forty quite often. On a tight course with her on and me off, she has beaten me many times. She even has a Club Championship (gross), which I have never won. Bottom line keep her encouraged, and you will have a life time golf partner.

Not as much as the shock when you see the bill from 5 hours of shopping!
At least with golf you KNOW the expense cost...with shopping the number can get very big, very fast!

My wife doesn't play at all and shows no interest. I like golfing with the guys while the wives sit by the pool, but I'll definitely admit that her not golfing costs us money when we're out of town. Usually she'll end up with an $80-100 massage at least one day of the weekend. The good thing is that she doesn't mind me golfing and is all about going to several great golfing destinations so I can play and she can relax. We've got Ireland, Pebble, and a few others on the list. The only one I haven't been able to get her on board for is Bandon.

With those golf destinations on the list she's probably sitting around with her friends saying something like "Man these golf vacations cost so much money, my husbands spends $200 to play a round, at least I only spend half of that on a massage while he's out"

I like the idea of her playing. We can play the Par3 courses here with a twilight rate for about $6, that's not that big of an investment for 3 or 4 hours of one on one attention with your wife...(When really you're playing golf so she get's attention and you get to golf.)
Once she got the hang of keeping her feet in one place and keeping her head down the rest of her swing just fell into place. Knees bent, head still through turn, good shoulder turn (she's got some assets that make a wide turn necessary,) toe of club pointed at target from the top, semi-striaght left arm, good wrist cock, chin down. I think there's a 15 handicapper in there somewhere. Now I just need to find a set of lighter women's clubs for her. She's been using my junior set that are very heavy. The driver she's hitting with there is a 7.5° Titliest 975D with a XXXX-stiff Proforce 65 Gold. I broke the shaft in that driver at the hosel and shaved it down and reinserted for an old girlfirend just to have a shorter club to swing. So the shaft is an X tipped about 4" and then insterted into a bore-thru head. Talk about brutal!!! She hits it well though. I think a 10.5 driver with a 55g R-flex would be a better fit.
So excited new clubs can be substituted for flowers now!!!
