Just like the title says how many of you people out there actualy use iron head covers? are they worth it?The only reason im bringing this up is because im getting some AP 1's soon and have heard the tales about how beat up they can get due to bag chatter!

Im not looking to keep the irons MINT for years however would like to avoid excessive wear and tear do to the clubs getting tossed in and out of the car and excessive bag chatter when walking/riding

Also keep the "Iron Head Covers are for sissy's" comments OUT of this thread please smile.gif

"Iron head covers are for..... just kidding."

I did use them for a while but I found what many do... you loose them, irritating in your pocket, takes more time... basically everyone I have ever sold them to has said the same thing and eventually left them in the garage.

The added wear is VERY minimal for most people... if it's concern, get a better bag that keeps them separate from each other... something like the revolver from Bag Boy. Otherwise... I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't need them, I play PINGS!

No never have, never will.

To say that iron head covers are for sissies is a bit harsh -- dweebs, definitely -- but sissies? That's crossing the line.
EnglishBob
Like the poster above, bought them, used them a few times, threw them in a box and left them home. The only time i put them on the clubs now is on long journeys or plane flights.

No, I do not. When I bought my first set of irons I used iron covers - for about 2 weeks. In 1986, I "upgraded" to investment cast Ram Accubars from the Spalding Top Flite blades handed down from my dad - the stupidity of youth - the irons and the iron covers both eventually proved to be lame.

I am thinking about get a BagBoy bag with cliplocks, they hold the clubs in place so they don't more around. Still deciding if I'll get a stand bag or a cart.
silver77
Iron covers are gay......get iron covers and then pop your collar and put the nose in the air

large towel snaked through the irons yes, iron covers not so much. all the above posts about losing them, inconvenient, not good looking are very true.

Now this is a good point I left out. I also have the fitted rubber ones in my travel bag that I use when taking them on a plain. That way they don't get beat up in flight.

I use them. It takes all of about 2 seconds to take it off and get it in my pocket, and about 2 more seconds to get it out of my pocket and back on the club, so I wouldnt say it adds a lot of time to anything. If people think its "gay" or "for sissies or dweebs", thats fine by me. They didnt buy my clubs, and I'm not asking them to use the covers. I personally dont care what other people think, as I dont live my life for the appeasement of others. I use them because I can, and because I dont like the sound of my clubs clanking together when in the bag. It would take more effort to snake a towel through the clubs every time I put one back in the bag, so I bought the cheap neoprene covers. If you want them, get them. It's your clubs and your money. dont worry about what others may think of you for using them. If you are worried about what others may think of you for things you do, you might as well never leave your house, because there will always be some judgmental person that you come across.

They will keep the bag chatter to a minimum, but in all honesty, the clubs are being slammed into the ground at high speeds, they wont look perfect for very long. I use them more for the noise of them banging together.
DefConOne
only use them when traveling. otherwise they are a pain.
Golfdawg
I use them and have been playing my Epon's for almost 3 years, and they still look new.

I usually do this. I use a big Callaway towel and I have a few of them.

but I also have iron covers laying around for when I play with forged blades. they are just too pretty to have sort of bag chatter on them.
SuperWade2
Hit the first round with my new irons last Friday...they came with nice Nike Neoprene covers... they lasted exactly 4 Holes and then they all came off and went in the bag. I'll probably use them if I travel, but they will stay in the garage when I'm just going to play local.

I do not use them. All I had to do is think about striking one rock in a bunker or on the ground that puts a nick in my clubs to realize the absurdity of of head covers. I swing toward the ground with way more force than sloshing around in a bag will do.

For my insolence, I guess I will just lose the extra 25 bucks when selling them. russian_roulette.gif

Am I the only one who actually likes a little chatter on his irons? I also like a litte rust on the wedges, and I don't mind if my putter has some character. Basically, my driver, hybrid and 3 wood are the only clubs I like to keep pristine. Aside from that, I like my equipment to look played.
golfware
Irons are pieces of equipment, not jewelry. They go through grass, dirt, and mud when used properly.

Iron covers are useless. And I used them for years, and now realized they are simply useless.

No, a bit of bag chatter just makes your irons look "broken in" in a nice way. They are tools, not pieces of art. I can't imagine ever using iron covers with any iron.

That said, if I saw someone with iron covers I'd assume he had something like MP-32's under there. If I saw an AP1 come out, I'd be like WHA????

I've used them on my last three sets... I don't find them to be a pain at all. They do take an extra couple seconds, but worth it to me. The covers I have used are neoprene ones and haven't paid more than $10 for them.

I don't have a problem with my wedges looking worn... I like them rusty, and a little worn... but the rest of my clubs I prefer to keep in as good a condition as possible.

I've had the AP1's for a couple months now and the wear on the high polished part of the faces outside of the grooves are getting scuffed up from cleaning sand/dirt out of the grooves but the rest of the heads are in perfect shape... something I know wouldn't be the case if I hadn't been using the covers since the day I got them.

I used to not care about paint chips on my woods or dinged up, bag chattered irons... but then I started ho'ing, nothing as extreme as some people I've seen on here, but ho'ing nonetheless, and I like to get as much value out of my clubs as possible if I happen to find something else I like.

Always used them , always will. One other nice thing about irons covers is nobody knows what I have in my bag.

I've got forged irons and wedges and started using iron covers the day after I played the first round with them while using a cart four years ago. The damage was noticeable after just one round of high flying bounces over tree roots, cart path ruts, et cetera. If I am walking, they are a pain to keep track of, so I don't use them. It is one thing to get a battle gouge from a rock, etc., during play, but another just to bang them up on the back of a golf cart.
Solutions Etcetera
I used them on my R7's when they were new. After a year or so I stopped. When my X-22's get here later today I plan to use them again (at least until the new club smell wears off).

But not on all of them... just every other one to prevent all the dings from chatter.
sean_miller
Good points regaring carting v. walking. I guess if my irons weren't so old already that may be a factor.
heisagoalie
why bother? You are taking your irons and slamming them into the earth, where there are rocks and minerals, as hard as you can to propel a ball 100-200 yards away..and that person wants to prevent bag chatter? It just seems kinda pointless to me.
paulkwada
If you are worried about it, The bag boy with clips is amazing. It truly works and keeps them in place. Personally I only use head cover on irons for trave. The woods and putter must be covered and prestine for my taste, but the irons and wedges look good with some wear. Besides I lose so many head covers it makes me sick. I've only played 10 times this year and have lost two. I can only imagine how many I'd lose if I covered all my clubs.

While iron covers get alot of abuse they serve a purpose. If you are trying out a set of irons and planning to resell if they dont work out use them. Helps the resell value. If you get fitted or dont plan on getting rid of your irons any time soon dont bother. If you do go with a set always get a set of clue glove, they are better fiitting and keep the clubheads more protected.

And yes I do have them on my irons at this time. So as you can tell I am not set on my irons YET. LOL

For my Ping i3 Blades, these irons are indestructable and do not require head covers.

For my 735.cm forged irons, they are covered all the time except when I am walking. Irons look nearly new after 3 years. These were made by Dana Upshaw, cost me some cash so I try my best to preserve the condition.

For you guys that do use them and are prone to throw a club ever now and then, a question.....

Do you replace the iron headcover before you toss or after?

Inquiring minds want to know.

I haven't done it with my AP1s, but with my X-16's I'd pick all of the dirt out of the cavity, give it a good cleaning, then put the cover back on.

biggrin.gif

as hard as I've slammed some clubs, I've never put a ding on them near as bag as some seriously bag chattered irons have.

my father has a set of Big Bertha Fusions that have rattled around in his bag for 3 years that look like holy hell, he won't get very much if he ever decides to sell those things, they look awful.
Adam W
always have used them. i feel like the pictures look a little better with the clubs retaining their luster, so i get a better price when i sell them to buy the next set...and the next set...and the next set...
Johwak121
Thanks for the feedback guys/girls i think for now im not going to get any

My irons were used but in 9/10 condition but i dont think they are going to get banged up as long as im not hitting from the cart path every lie

I guess if you buy BRAND NEW irons you feel more inclined to getting iron covers than if u buy used..
golfismylife
i used to but would get mad and forget them somewhere. im getting new foged irons soon and im deffinatly gonna use them again because i dont get as mad now and i reallllllyyy want my irons to look nice for a long time.. i think you should use them.
JackB1
I never understood why there aren't more golf bags that hold your irons securely in place. Seems like an easy thing to do.
Then we wouldn't need to have this silly iron cover discussion every 3 days.

Anyone seen using iron covers in our club is immediately labelled a woofter. Same people keep their tees in a purse and have novelty headcovers. Be afraid of these people!

I'm glad people think like this because it just means more money in my pocket. Like the $220 I took of some guy who tried to make fun of my iron covers and push cart. Thanks to him, he just paid for my push cart, iron covers and dinner.

To the OP, if you carry your bag and use iron covers, they will fall off. I'm down to 3 left out of the 12 or so I got. Haven't lost one since I bought a push cart. Also, if you ride in a cart and don't use headcovers, your irons will look abused after a couple rounds.
Greggz
I don't mind a guy with a bag full of head covers.

I don't mind a guy with shovels so large you could dig a well with them.

I don't mind guys with belly putters.

I don't mind guys with chippers.

I don't mind guys who can't break 100 playing blades.

I don't mind guys who can't break 100 toting a Rodney Dangerfield staff bag full of blades.

But for some reason, iron covers just don't seem right. Can't put my finger on it, but it just don't seem right. Watching them take them on and off and manage them the whole round is hard to watch. I can't explain why. I know I shouldn't care or even notice, but it just makes me shake me head watching them.

louie09
Don't like them, used them before, but now it is a hassel, but in a humid environment all they do is capture precipitation. I am sorry I don't want my MP60/67s getting a headstart on rust. My advice, show your irons off, let them breathe.
