I will be in Portland in a couple of weeks (mid-July). How is the current condition of Chambers Bay? I have read previous posts that weren't very complimentary about the greens. The course looks great from the pictures that I have seen, but I don't want to spend the high green fees if the course is not in great shape.

i haven't played there in a couple of months - but the greens will not be in great shape. will they roll true - yes. will they be fast - no. consistently slow, but true. if someone doesn't respond - call the club house and see if all of the greens are open - there were two temp greens last time out. regardless - it is an awesome course!

The greens are very slow, but that is the nature of fescue greens with ridiculous mounding. It is my understanding that the USGA keeps making them change a couple of the greens, so they are sometimes not open/in the best of shape. I haven't played since April up there. Either way it is worth the Trip, the layout is just so good. Just assume you are gonna putt like crap on your first round til you figure out the speed (the greens are like combed shag carpet).

If you need Portland suggestions feel free to ask and I can give you the lowdown around there.

Does it really matter, just go play it.

Acccording to reports the greens are generally stimping at 9-not fast but they do roll true. They were a bit fuzzy last month when I played but I'd guess 9 is pretty close.

Thr 4th green is closed throughout '09-takes what was a pretty interesting hole and makes it pretty mundane. All of the rest of the greens were open.

Some changes in fairway width (mow areas) and work in waste areas was ongoing-the second cut is quite an adventure now and will only get more challenging as the new edges grow in and to Open standards.

All in all a course worth visiting-if just to be able to say "you played that course prior to the '15 Open".

Played Chambers on Wednesday June 24.

The course is in very good shape. Greens still slow (no way are they close to 9), but not such that it affected my enjoyment of the round. You definitely have to make yourself hit putts.

#4 green is still under construction and playing as a par 4 to a temp green.

They are starting to grow in the rough. Disappointing to see this, but I guess it is to be expected with the USGA coming to town.

Lots of sunlight this time of year, check out the sunset rate ($90). We teed off at 4PM, finished at 8:30. Still an hour of daylight left. The shadows and colors really pop out in the late afternoon and make the course look gorgeous.

I absolutely recommend you play Chambers Bay during your visit. I've played it twice and for me, one of the greatest golf experiences I've ever had and I look forward to repeat visits.

*EDIT* Oh Yeah, Chambers Bay is near Tacoma/Seattle, a long way from Portland!

Seriously if you going to travel up there, get up early and play "The Home Course" it is in Dupont, WA in the morning than get the twlight rate at Chambers Bay. You wont be sorry.

Otherwise the replay rate at Chambers is really good so, bite the bullet on the early tee time dollars then get another in for $50 (at least that is waht is was a few months ago). In July the sun will be up til after 9 pm. so you could easily go three rounds if you really wanted to.

Hey guys, played at Chambers last weekend for the first time and I think the course is in great shape overall. I was somewhat worried that the greens were going to still be in rough shape and super slow (based on some comments here and others that I talked to), but they actually were playing great. They still have a temporary green for the 4th hole, but the new green complex looks like it will be really nice when it's finally ready.

Overall it was a great experience! A bit pricey so next time I'll go during the week or at twilight.
