With both players seemingly lost and forgotten only a few years ago and now there stocks rising recently with Duval's US Open finish and Daly's comeback to the PGA Tour after being banned, it begs this discussion.

Which player fell the hardest?

Which player had a bigger mountain to climb to get their way back to where they are now?

Who will sustain their comeback and/or be more successful?

Well, neither are really all the way back yet. Duval almost wins the US Open, bud didnt he finish dead last in a tourney this year? Daly is making progress, but I dont think he can get to the level of DD. Hope they both have a great finish to the year, golf needs it.

apples to oranges here.

Not even a question....

John's game never really left him, he simply needed to get his **** together mentally both on and off the course. His game was always there.

David on the other hand, completely lost his game through various reasons, but truly hit rock bottom as far as results went.

Duval, no question.

Duval, no question. He lost his stroke, worked hard, got it back.

Daly is battling substance abuse and is not back yet. Granted he made the cut last week. I wish John the best and am rooting for him, but he needs to posts a few top 10's first and somehow get his card back.

This is no contest. Duval completely fell off the map. From watching the coverage it seems like Duval is completely back. Looks like he has his confidence back.

Until a few days ago, I may have voted for Daly, but Duval has just finished 2nd at the US Open and held the lead with 2 holes to play. He clearly has the best comeback going. Duval won the Britich and suffered from a loss of desire, then he got injured and his priorities shifted to family. I can't say I blame him. Now his son is a bit older and he's ready to come back. Great picture of his son crying in his arms on the 18th green because daddy didn't win. It's also great to see DD showing some personality to the crowd. Fatherhood may have mellowed him a bit.

Daly's is a great story, but it's more of a personal comeback than a golf comeback. He needs to have some good finishes on tour before his return is complete. Since losing 60+ pounds and hooking up with Rick Smith, I think he's made progress and as long as he stays on track I look forward to seeing both David Duval and John Daly on leaderboards again soon!
Mr. Herbert
How has Daly even made a comeback at all? Just because his suspension is over, that constitutes a comeback?

I voted for DD but I don't think either of them have made a comeback....yet. I hope both of them do make it all the way back because I think it would be good for the tour and for fans. The younger players are great but we're getting to the point of generic golf where all their swings look the same and none stand out from a personality standpoint. JD and DD both add a unique element to the mix. Congrats to DD on his fine Open and hope we see more of him in contention in the weeks to come. This has to be a huge boost to his confidence as he played 4 solid rounds of golf.

My vote is for Steve Stricker.

I don't think they're really comparable until the end of the season (at least). Daly is just getting his feet wet as far as his "come-back" is concerned. DD has been out there all this year.

I wish the best for them both. They're both 2 of my favorite players and I've seen both play in person.

year is not over yet, my feeling is that we will see more from Duval this season, maybe even winning a tournament

Duval no question, he looked terrific today, held together very well and caught some bad breaks

John has been popping up from time to time and placing well and earing money where David dropped off the seen nearly all together. My vote 100% is for Duval.
I am so happy to see him playing well and I really think he looks more back to his old self after adding a few kilos back on.

After finishing tied for 2nd my vote goes to Duval, Daly hasn't done anything so far.

Yeah Duval had some real tough breaks out there. Up against trees and some real tough bunker shots. He could have easily won.

+2 How do you put DD in the same post as JD?

Daly has not done crap to deserve comeback player of the year. Duval has only had a tie for 2nd in the us open and nothing else. I don't think either has really shown that they deserve it yet but since this is just for giggles then Duval has doen more...a lot more.
ClarkGrswld4
what a joke thread this is....Daly made some cuts on a 2nd tier tour and the other guy just finished second in the US Open....David Duval was and is 100x better than Daly will ever be
twgolf
At this point it is too early to put either of them as the comeback player of the year. Daly just got back from suspension and made the cut at St. Jude and had a 2nd place finish on the European Tour in a weak field. Duval just finished 2nd at the US Open and held it together for all four rounds and had a share of the lead with two to play, but he needs to build off of this and show well in the remaining tournaments this year. Now if he had won the US Open, then hands down he is the comeback player of the year! At this point I think Duval has a better chance of building off of his finish at the US Open and possibly winning an event this year, so I would put him in front of Daly as the comeback player of the year.

On a side note I was at the golf course today during lunch watching the final five holes during lunch and there were young teenagers watching it with me waiting on a junior clinic to start. Both of them asked me who Duval was? When I told them that he was the #1 player in the world at one time while Tiger was playing and that he was the last person to shoot 59 in a PGA tour event, they did not believe me. Sad that the young golfers of today do not know any history outside of Tiger and Lefty!!

+1 Exactly.

How does JD get 5 votes on this question?? wacko.gif

While I admit that I did NOT see Duval putting up a result like T2 in the US Open, he did and he earned the respect that comes with it. He very well could have won without the brutal bunker plug bad break.

I would bet a VERY large amount of money that we will never see a T2 or better from JD in a major. Sorry all you JD fans, not happening

Good Stuff. As for Daly v.s. Duval, come on. 2nd in this years U.S. Open, or looking like you are wearing factory seconds. Duval all the way.

And what do those pictures have to do with a comeback? We aren't talking about who won more majors.
