MOBILE, Ala. -- Professional golfer John Daly has made plenty of headlines both on and off the course since he burst onto the scene with his victory in the 1991 PGA Championship.

On Monday, Daly made his presence known in Mobile when the top of his RV smashed the top of the Bankhead Tunnel and the parts collided with an oncoming vehicle.

According to the traffic accident report from the Mobile Police Department, Daly was traveling eastbound toward the tunnel. A sign warns that the tunnel entrance is just 12 feet high, and dangling chains determine if a vehicle is too tall.

In his witness report, Jimmy Roberson of Mobile was just exiting the tunnel when the fan and awnings on top of Daly's RV crashed into his 1998 Cadillac DeVille. Roberson's windshield, roof and trunk were damaged in the 2:32 p.m. accident, according to the police report.

Roberson referred all questions to his attorney, Steve Moore of Moore & Wolfe, who said the firm is acting as legal counsel to make sure Roberson is "treated fairly."

"We're at the claims stage right now," said Moore, whose firm specializes in automobile accidents. "(Mr. Roberson) had some fairly significant car damage, and had some neck and shoulder injuries.

"We'll present it as a claim (to Mr. Daly's representation) and see what happens. Hopefully we can avoid litigation."

Moore said the damage to Roberson's car was approximately $8,000, which would total the vehicle.

A message left for Daly by the Press-Register was not returned.

Both Roberson and Daly were unharmed, according to the police report, and were able to drive away from the scene. Moore said that Roberson followed up with a trip to a doctor.

Neither driver was charged in the accident, according to the report. Because there was no collision, it wasn't technically an accident, according to Mobile Police spokesman Cpl. Charles Bagsby.

"This is a property damage incident -- not an accident -- because the vehicles did not collide with one another," Bagsby said. "No criminal charges are being looked at. Apparently (Daly) didn't know that this occurred. Items fell from his camper and caused damage to the other vehicle."

Bagsby said Daly was pulled over shortly after the incident, and once he was made aware of what transpired, he returned to the scene and cooperated fully.

Daly is coming off a six-month suspension from the PGA Tour. He played in the St. Jude Classic last week, finishing in a tie for 59th place.

Aside from winning the 1991 PGA Championship, Daly -- who was named the PGA Tour rookie of the year in 1991-- also won the British Open in 1995. He has five PGA wins in his career, the last in the 2004 Buick Invitational

Figures this idiot would claim shoulder and neck injuries, even though the police report claims that there were no injuries. I guess the guy knew who John Daly was and figured that it would be a good way to get an easy paycheck.

Steve Moore sounds like a really classy and overall good guy...

U hit the nail on the head! Looks like (to me) that Mr Roberson and his crank attorney are after the big bucks on this one, and John Daly is the pigeon! It's amazing what some people will do for a buck! aggressive.gif
