John Atkinson, the first contestant in the Golf Digest US Open challenge passed away today at age 40 from lung cancer.

I saw that on the Today show this morning. That's sad, RIP John. I'm just happy that Golf Digest, Lauer, and other folks involved cared enough to report the story. It shows how tight knit the golf community is to remember someone who won a contest a while back.

That guy was a fighter with a great attitude. He will be missed.
