I am just doing a survey.

When you go on golf trips do you take your clubs with you or do you rent?

Do you drive or fly? If you fly, would you consider renting clubs because of the cost to fly them?

If you had the option, would you rent from a company that would let you customize your bag for that golf trip for a reasonable price?

What is a reasonable price for renting golf clubs for 1 round of golf? How about renting one set of clubs for your entire trip?

Would you rent from a company that would let you customize your bag for your trip?

Thanks!!

What if the rental company received new equipment every year so it was always top of the line and they let you customize the set??

I just came back from a week long trip to Dallas. The airline charged me $15 each way to take my clubs. Since I was going to an area I was unfamiliar with, I did not know if rental clubs would be available and how much they would cost. Like you, I haven't done that before.

I did get to play 3 times, so I'm not sorry I took them. Wish I could help more.

Whenever practical, I bring my own. Being a lefty, it can be hit or miss whether they have decent rentals at many places. It's typically not too much of a hassle to fly clubs, I use a hard case and they arrive just fine. I went to Ireland last year for a couple of weeks but only had time for one round and no way to easily carry clubs along, so I figured I would rent. I ended up with the worst selection of clubs ever, random models, flexes, and so on. The driver had a broken shaft taped together. Really poor. And it cost me 30 Euro ($45) for the rental fee - I should have gone to their version of KMart and bought a beginner set off the rack for the same price. The clubs pretty much ruined my round, I ended up playing a 6 iron and PW only for most of the round. In fairness, I had written to resort to confirm they had rentals for lefties, they said "yes" but that I would be happiest if I brought my own. At least it was golf in Ireland, but certainly nothing to write home about.

I would certainly consider this to be the exception rather than the rule when it come to renting. But for me, it's worth the hassle to have my own sticks.

i take my clubs b/c i am 6'5" with shortish arms and any clubs i rent would not match my club specs.

i prefer to drive.

Leaving in the morning for 7 rounds in Phoenix. Wouldn't dream of not taking the sticks. The only scenario where renting would be considered is traveling internationally and only playing 1 round.

I always have this problem. If I'm playing a very nice course I would always take my own clubs. The nice course probably has decent rental clubs, but if I want to get the most out of my round, I need my sticks. If it's a dog track, their rental clubs are usually not passable. So, either way I end up taking my clubs.

i bring them when I fly and drive. look at the airline policies before you go, some let you sub the golf bag for a suitcase, in which you can then bring a small carryone or share if your going with someone else.

I don't fly, so I am no help there at all. One year on vacation though we didn't bring the clubs. Then like clockwork, my father in law wants to play and says he has found a course that he likes that has rentals. Long story short, the rentals were crap. We rented 4 "sets" not one of which was complete or had a snad wedge. The course was nice, but I can't say I enjoyed it because of the crappy clubs. Not to mention the $25 rental fee for them either. If we go again and I leave the clubs at home, I am not golfing. I will just get pissed russian_roulette.gif and have zero fun.

Always take them no matter what.

I tend to drive as well if I am going on a golf vacation. I just don't like the idea of not using my clubs to play a round, especially if I'm playing at nicer courses. idk if I could trust flying my putter, but everything else is replaceable to me if it were to get damaged.

I would always take them if I knew I was going to play. I have a pretty busy work schedule and don't get a ton of rounds in so any round I play I want to enjoy and not waste an opportunity with a horrible set of rental sticks.

Having said that, I have seen some pretty decent rental sets at a few resort courses in the last couple of years but it wouldnt be something I would want to do.

I'm a super high spin player so I take mine. There isn't a stock golf club in the world that I don't spin at about 4000 rpms with the driver. 20 yards shorter than normal because of spin is no fun all day off the tee.

I like this question though because I bet a lot of people question if they should take their sticks or not.

Great post!

I know exactly what you mean. It's nice to use something new and neat, but it's hard to play a round when you have a game plan and trust for every club in your personal arsenal.

When you are as picky and fanatical about your clubs as some of us are....you bring your own sticks!

Best thing to do is to bring your own clubs. The cost is usually around $15 to $20, each way, depending on the airline. Just make sure u buy the best travel bag case possible.

Me? I've been "unlucky" in that I don't get to travel too far or to different places to play golf (family business has totally put a cramp into any sort of long or far away vacations sad.gif ). My standard "golf trip" has become going for a long weekeknd (4 to 5 days max.) to visit my younger sister (along w/her husband & kiddies) in Miami, FL about twice a year for the past 7 yrs., more or less? Anyways, what I did to cut down on flying with clubs was buy a used iron set (can't recall the exact Nickent model thought) in FL and leave it there, at my sister's house. The woods and putter are clubs that I had put aside in my room as back ups, which were not getting much useage. Thus, I've removed the hassle and expense in terms of golf clubs check-in to my FL trip and overall, it's a pretty decent FL golf bag set, so can't complaint. This is the best way to go in terms of your annual or semi regular trips to relatives in another state that you gotta fly to. Besides, I'm sure, like most of us here in this forum, you probably have extra golf clubs lying around that could make up a decent set.

If for some reason I'm thinking of not taking my sticks I call the course(s) beforehand and ask what they have available.. and then usually pack 'em.. once I was going to atlanta and was going to play Hawk's Ridge and they rented the exact clubs I used at the time (x-14's).. I brought my driver and putter... hit a bunch of three woods on the range before we tee'd it up...

Great topic. I travel quite a bit for work, often to places with good golf in winter (SF, Orlando, LA). I would prefer to bring my clubs every time but that gets me in hot water with my wife (two small kids so she is never happy when I travel, knowing I am golfing as opposed to working peaves her even more). So, unless I have to stay over a weekend and can use that as my excuse for bringing the clubs, I have to be sneaky and rent clubs if I want to play (evil I know but we do what we can smile.gif). Despite the fact that I am a low-spin player with a moderate swing speed who can usually get by with off the rack clubs, I have almost always been disappointed with the quality of rental clubs. I've gotten to the point where I simply enjoy the course and the fact that I am golfing when my buddies back home in Buffalo are buried under 2 feet of snow.

Upside is that I have traveled to SF so much that I have scoped out the places that have good rentals. I usually play Half-Moon Bay as they have relatively nice rentals (callaways) and shoes. In Orlando, I recently discovered that Grande Pines has good rentals (new TMs, stiff flex if you ask) and nice adidas shoes. In LA, Oak Quarry has fairly good rentals; Rustic Canyon is a neat course but the rentals were pathetic (kid in the pro shop didn't even charge me for them).

Usually travel to Europe once a year - played in Scotland a few years back and the rentals were horrendous! Next time I will bring the clubs and deal with the flak from my wife.

If going on a trip with the specific plan of playing golf, then I would always take my clubs.

Would only rent if it just happened that I was somewhere without my clubs and the opportunity to play presented itself.

Are you going anywhere specifically? Rental clubs can be more expensive then traveling with them depending on where you're going. When I worked in Kohler, we charged $95 per round and it was roughly the same at Pebble. So, long story short, I always take mine, but if you don't want to, be sure to do your research.
