Could anyone who is local or played Poppy Hills recently give me heads up? I was also looking at Bayonet? I am going as a NCGA, but my friend is not, so I know Poppy will be around $100. Thanks

You have made an excellent choice by choosing Poppy Hills to play. You will love the layout if you like tree lined style golf courses. A solid Robert Trent Jones design. I have always loved playing there especially in the morning. You won't be disappointed! aaahhhh brings back good old memories!

A few weeks ago I went down and played Bayonet and Poppy with my son.

We both preferred Poppy.

Yup, Poppy is much better than Bayonet. It can be foggy and chilly (even in the summer) especially in the mornig - be ready with extra layers. Have fun!!!

I love Poppy. It gets bashed alot but I find it a fantastic, championship layout. Punishing as it is beautiful. Completely in the Del Monte Forest so there's only tiny glimpses of the ocean far away, and that's on a clear day. If your up for a second round, I highly recommend Pacific Grove GC. Short, but you'll hit every club in the bag and the back nine views rival that of Spyglass and Spanish. For 45 bucks it's probably the best bang for your buck in the entire state. I dare anyone to find a better bargain. Granted, it is a muni so the turf isn't pristine but the greens are decent and the experience is awesome . A true diamond in the rough.

Actually, for NCGA members it's like $50-ish. Plus, as a NCGA member, you get 20% off items in the proshop if you find anything you like.

I am going Friday so NCGA is $72 ish and I have a coupon for my friend for $115. I want to play more rounds, but it's a short day and half trip and only time for 1 round.

Ahh yes enjoy your round, outside of Spyglass Poppy is my #2 track up there. I would normally second the chance to play Pacific Grove, but it sounds like your pressed on time.
Here is what you will be looking at on #1

Robert Trent Jones Jr. has a penchant for punishing first shot holes on his courses. This first hole at Poppy is a killer. Drive is extremely important and nasty if you don't smoke it. His North Course at Coto de Caza in the OC is a brutal par 5 where your opening tee shot is over a canyon and inbetween 2 massive trees. Unbelievably brutal shot to start your round. How bout his Princeville's Prince Course on the island of Kauai first hole shot? Long downhill par 4 with a narrow almost blind fairway, and you have to deal with the trade winds. Or what about his new creation up in Washington, Chambers Bay. Not a hard opening tee shot, fairway is very generous but the hole is almost 500 yds for a par 4 and the left side of the fairway up near the green is 40 yds below the surface of the green. Absolutely brutal hole to start your round.

Poppy Hills is in my top 3 favorite course I have ever played. It's a great layout, you're in for an absolutely incredible round of golf.

That is a tough freaking opening hole!!!

Trees left, hazard right, sidehill lie in the fairway.

Great course.... can't wait to get out there again.

Honestly cant remember, I wanna say 230-240(to carry the bunker) not very sure though. We were the first group out and my buddy overslept so we didnt have time to hit any range balls. I did manange to hit driver with a nice little 5-10 yard cut around the trees that landed just past the right side of the bunker you see. Left my self a smooth 9 iron in the flew the green and got up and down for par from the rough behind the green. One of my best pars of the day, got me off to a great start.
