I was watching the limited coverage on Saturday and noticed Tim Herron was puffing away. Obviously he is a man who likes the food but I was surprised to see him smoking. We all know John Daly loves to smoke while on the course. Angel Cabrera was smoking when he won the US Open a couple of years ago, but I hear he quit soon after. I hear Ben Crenshaw still does it.

What other players are lighting up on the course?

I walked 18 with Lumpy 2 days ago. Funny to watch him warm up. Drag on smoke, blow it out, hit ball.... Over and over.... On the course (that day) he only smoked after a bogey. More players (mostly older ones) smoke than you think. Go to a tour event when the cameras are not on and you will see alot of stuff that is never on TV. When the cameras are on they act differently. BTW, a ton of younger tour players dip....

Yup... and they spit it all over. But Tiger is the antichrist for spitting on a golf course... laugh.gif

Arnold DID,

Jack DID,

Fuzzy still DOES,

Stadler DID,

Trevino DID,

Clarke still DOES,

The list could go on and on and on and on....................................

Tim Herron is a god. Not only does he play some sweet sticks (Eye 2s, baby!!!), but you really have to admire that sort of extreme self-neglect. The "M&Ms" logo on his shirt is priceless. Not since Hooters signing John Daly has there been such an appropriate endorser/endorsee relationship.
PMAC
Nick Price....always has a dart going....

There are to many to count on all tours... I suspect they are told to watch out for TV camera's. Lot's of cigars too.

Most NBA'ers smoke. wink.gif

Ben Hogan smoked too.
It's funny as a cigar is cool but cigarettes are bad???????????????

Several do, also I have noticed in the past few years that dipping is becoming more popular.

Woosie always liked a fag when he was out on the course, but the undisputed king of the nicotine worshippers is/was Barry Lane. Following him for 9 holes put you down as a 20 a day man just from all the passive smoke you ended up inhaling if the wind was blowing in the right direction.

Someone above spoke of Nick Price. I was at Turnberry in '94 and can personally vouch for the fact that Price is an accomplished smoker. Over the last few holes on Sunday he was puffing away like a lunatic and the end of his cig was disappearing faster than Parnevik's chances of winning.

Edit: For American readers, a 'fag' has a very different meaning in Blighty. It's a colloquial term for a cigarette. Unlike the fact that an Englishman in the U.S. being asked if he fancied a round of golf whilst sporting a pair of knickers would no doubt result in a haughty look and a quick exit, the mention of 'having a fag' is not something that will raise too many eyebrows over here.

+1 on Price. I'm pretty sure the guy puts away two cigarettes a hole when in contention.

my buddy and i followed justin leonard for a few holes during last years at&t at pebble beach and both he and his caddy were dipping and spitting all over the course. that is by far the most disgusting habit. for those of us that are golf fans but can never afford to play a round at pebble it pretty much amounted to sacriledge to me.

It not just golf but there are plenty of Pro Atheletes that smoke. I can remeber as a kid watching Hank Aaron puff away in the dugout at Braves home games. He tried to hide in the corner while he smoked but you would catch him occasionally..
All sports involve a crossection of people and contrary to what some may think they are mere mortals with the same habits and fears of the general population. They justy make Big $$$ to play a game..

20 years ago, I was following Crenshaw and he lit up. I was a little taken back, but then I had really only started getting into golf and they didn't show it on TV in the tournaments I had watched.

Also...saw Tommy Armour III shielding a cig in his hand when he was on the Haney Project a few weeks ago.

Not sure why I noticed....maybe because he looked like he was being secretive about it.

Lumpy? I watched him struggle up a hill at Augusta and between the weight and smoking, I was wondering what the heck he was thinking. Then again, he was inside the ropes and I was a spectator.....so whatever works.

BTW...John Daly has a smoke every now and then. (kidding).

Who said anything about our kids watching?

Have you got any children?

But since you brought it up.....I watch very closely what my children are exposed to. While watching a golfer smoke isn't necessarily on my banned list......I wouldn't want my child to adopt a role model who was a smoker. So stop with the "blah blah blah" just because it doesn't fit the role modeling that you want for YOUR kids. I have the final say when it comes to mine and my rules for them isn't any of your business.

AK throws in a hogleg quite often from the pics on getty.

David Duval and Chad Campbell both dipped in the past, not sure if either still does.

Love it!! Fags, dip, swearing, spitting in cups. This is awesome!! I smoke cigs on and off the course but i am really mindful of people when I do because smoking is so outdated and not the COOL thing to do anymore. I'll walk when I smoke if I'm paired up with some one that I don't know when I smoke. Have kids and don't smoke in the house and when kids are in truck don't smoke.

nutting wrong with AK toking on a hog leg, dubie and whatever the kids call it these days.

I don't get why people think that dipping is so disgusting, first off they don't bother anyone because it's not like there is second hand smoke, and it's just spit people spit all over. You are outdoors why would it matter that someone spits on the ground? I think it's a better habbit to adopt then smokin

When dip is outside its fine. What I find very disgusting is when they come inside and carry around a mountain dew bottle filled with brown spit all over the place. GROSS!!!

It does hurt the grass though. That's why people get so mad about spitting on the green or teebox, it's a place where you have to stop for a while so people do it there the most, and the accumulation has a chance of killing of patches of grass.

Not only that, have you ever had your ball roll through a puddle of dip spit? It's disgusting. I play golf with people that dip, but they're always mindful about where they spit (usually in the rough; more motivation to keep it in the short grass lol). I think if I did see one of my playing partners spit dip on a green or tee box, I'd definitely have to call them out on it.

Also . .

This reminded me of a story from when I was in highschool. I was playing Jones Creek near Augusta, Georgia one afternoon with my buddy and two of his co-workers (they worked at the course). They all dipped, but none of them "chewed." Well, they were playing a game where the low scorer of the 3 had to chew during the next hole (they were all evenly skilled, low handicap players). Well, one of the guys was having an awful day with his wedges and was blasting hossle rockets all over the place. He went 8 straight holes with chew in his mouth (probably longer than an EXPERIENCED "chewer" would do). After we make the turn, he runs inside to go get some water and is chugging it as he runs back to the 10th tee box. I guess he still had chew in the corner of his mouth, because he ended up swallowing some when he was chugging down the water and within seconds we were all witnessing projectile vomiting at its finest. It was epic. I don't think I've ever seen puke with so much range. Worst part about it is the marshall (also their boss) was driving up towards us in his golf cart and they had to explain why the guy is puking his brains out all over the freshly mowed tee box (a week before a tournament). I think the guy worked there the rest of the summer and they didn't invite him as a full-time employee (or a part-time employee for the next summer).

It's strange how common place smoking once was on a golf course, now it seems a little out of place. Nothing worse than finding a half smoked cigar laying around decomposing.
The strangest/best experience with smoking I have had was at a course in Jamaica. Most caddies carry copious amounts of ganja and will roll a perfect spliff for you while simultaneously giving a perfect read of any green.

That is always wicked. New dippers or people who arn't used to getting that kind of a plug for that long actually get a minor case of nicotine poisoning. It makes you really jittery, you feel clammy, your mouth gets dry, and by the time you feel like you need to start drinking water, it's usually too late to keep from losing it. Happens to the best of em I suppose.

After all, one dip has the same nicotine content of 4 cigarettes; if you hold a plug for awhile, it can release much as 6 mg, or six cigarettes, in less than 30 minutes.

So if you're plugging half a can a day, that is equivalent to 40 cigarettes a day.

yes, but you have to factor in that chewing tobacco has a 90% less chance that you'll get cancer compared to cigarette because the main risk in tobacco is when it infiltrates the lungs

What is the problem with a cigar on the ground? They are 100% biodegradable! They are also nutrients for the grass. I understand that they look like trash but they are actually fertilizer.

Is that true about Jamaica? If so I know where I am going on vacation.
