In what order would you rate the three course? 1. Harbour, 2. Ocean, 3. Heron?
bogeyjosh
harbor town
heron
ocean

I liked Ocean better than Heron. I thought Heron was a little tricked up at times. Both are very pretty so you can't go wrong. Also, don't be fooled by Ocean's course name there is only 1 hole on Ocean and it is a par 3 going towards Ocean.

They are all good.

Daufuskie Melrose is 2nd only to HarbourTown. I could rotate among those courses forever.

HarbourTown only has 2 holes along the water #17 and #18. Part what makes HT's final 3 holes one of the finest finishing stretches in all of golf is that you're fairly insulated from the water and the breeze for the first 15 holes and then you have to do an about face and factor in the ocean breeze.

I would rate the 3

HT
Heron
Ocean

I think Heron since it's new has a couple greens that are too hard that they'll end up re-doing soon. The Ocean course is nice but when they re-worked it into the Ocean Course they gave the gig to Mark McCumber for some reason and I've never been much of a fan of his work. With a piece of real estate like that they should have awarded it someone with a little different vision.

I usually wind up on the minority side of any debate about Ocean, so I fully recognize that most don't seem to care for it like I do. I think it is interesting, memorable, with a nice mix of very tough and less demanding holes. It has plenty of doglegs in both directions, water in play on many holes. It is still, however, the least demanding of the 3, and is misnamed - you have to go out of your way to see the Ocean on the one hole on which it is visible.

Both Heron Point and The Ocean Course are re-works of original courses that were typical ho-hum 20 year old Hilton Head Island layouts along the lines of Barony or Planters Row on Port Royal. Because of this the real estate available to work with was limited to the routing already in place. I think that's why I don't think the Ocean Course is that special or others think Heron Point seems tricked up. To really make them different and unique they had to do things on those courses that you wouldn't normally need to do on HHI such as move in a bunch of dirt or add a bunch of sand and waste areas.
