Should the US Open or PGA be held at Quail Hollow? I think that course would make a very good major test.

thoughts?

would be a interesting Open course with the field hitting so few fairways...grow that rough to Open standards and there wont be any 65s with only a couple fairways hit

considering the pros were saying the rough was a joke and driver accuracy meant nothing, then no.

Unless of course the grow the rough out and narrow the fairaways.
good read!
They specifically cut the rough down this year to try and let the players score. Simply based on the fact that the better players come here year in and year out and continually rave about how much they like the course, Quail could indeed hold a major. One of the toughest finishing stretches and the hardest Par 3 on tour last year without being set up by the USGA surely means it could be set up plenty hard for a US Open. Love to see a major come to Charlotte. Not to mention, Charlotte knows how to host big events.

I would love to see a major championship come to Charlotte, especially since I live here. The course could set up a lot harder then it has this year. The rough really isn't bad at all, but they could make it a lot worse like they have done so in the past.

The rough was cut down to 2 inches this year.

If they grew the rough out to US Open length, the winner of this tournament would be in the low single digits under par because they would make at least 1 hole (#7) a par 4.

When the contract ends (2012 or 2014 somewhere around there), the Quail Hollow Championship will not be held at Quail Hollow anymore (may end up going to Charlotte CC or Club at Longview) so that could be when the USGA looks into it.

I'm not that familiar with the immediate area, but is it logistically feasible? The US Open is a huge event and it seems that the USGA is largely limiting the host sites to complexes with multiple courses that can handle the additional infrastructure. I was playing Torrey quite a bit as they were getting ready and it is a huge production. The members of a single-course private club may not be too fond of their only course being taken over and dealing with some disruption of play for over a year...

i am not fond of putting a major on a course that sees the best and brightest every year anyhow.

I would much rather see a course that doesn't get such attention.

There was an article in our local paper yesterday regarding Quail Hollow hosting a major, alluding to the fact that the tournament will probably end when the Wells Fargo contract runs out in 2014.

According to the article, PGA of America officials are in Charlotte this week as guests of club president Johnny Harris, who is trying to land the 2017 PGA Championship and the 2024 Ryder Cup.

Davis Love III (Players commitee member) was not convinced:

"The course is great! It would certainly handle a major, but I don't think there's enough room for everything else that goes along with it.

"It's the infrastructure that poses the problem. If Johnny Harris said you all come look at Quail Hollow for a U.S. Open or PGA, they wouldn't look much at the golf course. They would be concerned with: Is there room for parking? Is there room for corporate hospitality? Is there room for buses? Can they handle much larger crowds than what they experience for the normal tour stop?"

That's 1 year out of 7. They decided to go with super firm fairways and green, and easy rough. It's not hard to change course setup up like that. USGA does it every year for the US Open.

I don't see CCC holding a tour event. It's a weak course imo, nothing remotely close to QHC. OTH, Longview is a peach. Dunno about parking situation there though? smile.gif

I had this discussion in the shuttle bus on the way back from the Tuesday practice rounds. The issue for a major (especially the US Open) is parking and access. Frankly, there probably isn't enough close enough to the course (especially in the middle of June... Carowinds will be open full time then and thus no parking there) to warrant an Open there. Fun to think about though. smile.gif
