I understand TGC is looking for some personality when choosing the contestants but some of the guys are unreal. I just heard some guy talk in the third person. I've enjoyed watching the shows but some of the egos are making it tough. Anybody else notice this kind of thing?

I was wondering the same thing. I wasn't paying attention when he came on and they listed his credentials, but he caught my attention with how much he thinks of himself. He looked like an average joe who takes a mammoth swing and hits it a mile. They really did find some big egos for this show. I'm glad that Eugene moved on, he seemed like a very likable guy, just much better than the other guy! The ladies aren't too bad looking either.

i know someone who has caddied for Derek Gillespie in the past, and he's a really nice guy, but man has he gotten....confident, lets say. haha, but he truly is the best player there, i hope he wins it just cause i wanna see him take it to the next level. The guy makes more birdies and eagles than any pro i've seen, its just he also makes a lot of bogeys and big numbers....i think a little better course management and he could be big.

Yoonie thinks Brian is f****** hilarious, if only because he's so full of himself. Yoonie also thinks the big bomber was pretty funny too- shame he got eliminated before they got to any of the driving challenges. Yoonie loved the part where he said he was "waiting for his prey." Seriously. I understand the pressure must be IMMENSE, but a bunker shot is one of the easiest shots in golf. to leave it 50 feet short is unacceptable for an aspiring professional under any kind of pressure.

the dude that got eliminated came off as very stupid. They were talking about him hitting way too much club on that one shot. I remember they said he had 188 in, does anybody know what club he hit? To be 70 yards long left it had to be WAAAY too much club.
eatthemoney
Apr 20 2009, 11:59 PM
was just watching the replay, from 188 how are you on this show and miss that badly? his tee shots were great but the first second shot he hits a worm burner, then pulls one 70 yds offline from 188? He deserved to get eliminated.

Maybe Robert hits the ball a long way but he sucks with his irons. I would love to play this headcase for a couple of dollars. I am not a great player but I can hit iron shots better than Robert did in the elimination challenge.
Mward2002
Apr 21 2009, 12:05 AM
I hope he was being sarcastic. It didn't sound like it, but I'll give benefit of the doubt I guess.
If he was 188 out and was that long, he had no more than 6 iron in. He must have put a pull hook on the ball that only Kenny Perry could be proud of.

That guy's swing was obviously built for distance, not to withstand pressure. Super strong grip, a dip and rip. Fore left.
On the other hand, I think you guys are being too hard on him. I would guess very few guys here have built their swing around withstanding the pressure of tournament play.

He didn't get to place his ball in the bunker. Plus that's a pretty low lip and the greens are thousand times more receptive than those at augusta. If I recall correctly, chad had a tough downhill lie to a ~1 yard landing area to get it close to the pin, as opposed to trying to get it in a 50 foot circle on a flat green from a perfect lie.

Robert is not confident or clever enough to carry several episodes from a jerk standpoint. I wanted him gone. Everything he said was forced and lacking, from the intro voice impersonation to all the lame wolf and pray references.
Brian demonstrates real potential as a self-centered lard. The third person reference and grass tossing extravagance were beyond Robert's repertoire, plus the best line of the show was, "Is he going to use his putter again?" during elimination.
My first priority is cute women advance. Nicole is the spotlight player for me. After that, you need the disruptors to emerge and get under some skin. Kaanapali minus Lori and Michigan with an early ousted Dave would have been snooze, too much focus on actual golf with all its obstacles and white chalk.
Derek looks to have one of the best swings I've seen in Big Break. That's not worth very much. Blair's rear end surprisingly filled out more of those white pants than I expected.
What, is Stina a black widow hostess? No one seems to rerun with her -- Magee, Billy Ray and now Rymer.

yea that dude was strange and obviously some people took him seriously but obviously he was joking the entire time (about his skull that almost got to the green) or at least i hope he was. He was trying to quote arnold from "pumping iron" with that line...in the film arnold was talking about being the reigning mr olympia for a number of years in a row and his friends were screwing around with him telling him his competitors are hungrier than he is. so arnold replies something like: "true, the wolf on top of the hill is not as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill...but when he wants food its there" hes saying his competitors probably want to win more than he does but that he'll win mr olympia if he wants to. he's pretty much being cocky saying he was going to win. when the dude on the show said that line i thought it was hilarious. strange but funny that he quoted "pumping iron"...i wonder if he actually thought that viewers of the big break would understand the joke with that quote. for those that haven't seen the film i would recommend it...its pretty funny and you see how hilarious arnold used to be.

All I got to say is the guy had about a 70-75 foot bunker shot with no lip. All he had to do was get it inside of 51 feet. Given those parameters he should have easily gotten that shot on the green. Heck he could have putted the ball.

I would like to see an instructor co-host the show. Personally, I would like to see Mike McGetrick, Jim McLean or Rick Smith (original co-host) host. Very few former tour players would bring the insight the instructors do because their opinion would stem from their playing style. An instructor has seen nearly every caliber of golfer and could comment on why an error or mishit was made. That would be insightful as may bad shots we will see on the show.

Did one of the girls (Gerina I think?) really mistake her 56° for her PW? Really? Not sure what's in her bag, but unless she's carrying a 45-46-47° Vokey as a PW, there's no excuse for mistaking a PW from an iron set with a 56° wedge. Just my opinion.
Thank god that guy got eliminated. He was annoying right outta the gate.

Three guys had me shaking my head in disbelief after hearing comments.
Robert Read: The whole Lion waiting on it's pray thing..LOL..Bigg hitter off the tee no iron game.
Brian Skatell: Mr. Annoying, Throwing the grass up, third person references and all the we're pro's talk. A lot of talk have not seen his game yet to see if he can back it up.
Derek Gillespie: The line about being good looking and women watching..chesse. Looks to be a decent player disappointed in short game shots so far though.
My Picks:
Guys:
- Aaron Wright we'll see if he has enough tournament play in recent years to handle pressure.
- Derek Gillespie: Could be the most experienced on bigger stage it's a toss up if he stays focused could easily win. I think he would get in Brian's face for this reason alone I like him.
- Eugene Smith: I am sure he put a big scare into him self, facing elimination on the first show. This may be enough to get him focused and take him deep into the game.
Gals:
- Gerina Mendoza: Early impression and bio suggest, best female athlete from the bunch. Did not seem phased buy miss-clubbing on the first shot and moving deeper into elimination, Came back later and hit a great shot. I think she could win it all.
- Blair O"neil : Easy on the eyes and a nice golf swing from what we saw of it. Appears confident and has a strong Bio. Could easily go deep or win the prize.
- Kim Kouwabunpat: I liked this girl from the time she stepped up and missed the putt. She has a great personality appears to love the game and just has a great overall attitude. Decent bio played a nice bump and run shot we'll see how she does. I hope she hangs around and goes deep.

Apparently that's gone, at least for this version. The winner gets $100,000 cash along with a $10,000 shopping spree at Dick's, and an Adams endorsement deal. I think they said that was $10,000 also. Plus Adams clubs.
So now they'll change emphasis and completely ignore the persistent theme of every previous Big Break, where the little sound bytes would deluge, "The money is nice, but we're all going after the exemption..."

The interviewee (previous winner?) on golfgal's blog made a pretty good point- how many times have you hit what you thought was a perfect shot, only for the ball to end up 15 yards off line? Don't you ever check the wind to try and figure out if it was your swing or the wind?
