Full Version: What kind of PGA pro would you be?

mantan
One of the lightning rod topics is the personalities of PGA pros and how we think/feel they should act.

One one hand, they are entertainers whose prize money is mostly dictated by putting on an entertaining product for their fans which may be above and beyond playing great golf with absolutely no joy or personality. (see Irwin, Hale) On the other hand it's their job...and I imagine if you filmed us all day in our profession you'd see some good things and some bad things depending on the day. Likewise, our personalities on the golf course would likely vary depending on how we are playing.

Sometimes I think we think that since they are playing a game we consider a hobby for a job, PGA pros are somehow exempt from bringing their real personalities to the course. Like in real life, some are going to have tempers, some are going to be boring, some will be very extroverted and happy go lucky....others will be introverted and hard to read. People perceive some players as 'nice guys' and other as 'a-holes' based on VERY limited glimpses on TV or a chance encounter in real life.

We all tend to think we'd be the model golf pro, but if you were being honest, how would you be perceived.....

I think I'd be an odd cross between Tommy Armour III (gotta enjoy the nightlife!), Rory Sabbatini (I play lightning fast...almost to a fault) and Tommy Bolt (yeah, I can get a little agitated on the course..... wink.gif )

But one of my favorite playing partners is a WRXer I'd describe as a cross between Ben Crane (ummm, methodical) and Steve Stricker (very introverted and in his game)

John Daly without the expensive divorces and gambling debt.

Arnold Palmer was/is the model for pros to emulate, he always had time for the fans and when he signed an autograph it was legible.
A lot of top players today don't spend any time with the fans and this will only hurt them in the long run.

Id be just like Boo. Big dip of skoal in my lip and cutting up with the fans on the range.

paul goydos: self-effacing and a very dry sense of humor.

I'm more a Lee Trevino type. Having fun and loving the game!!

A broke Woody Austin

+1 FOR BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I think I'd be sort of like Camilo. A great work ethic, and a deep desire to reach my full potential. I also like to look my best. I have an overall calm persona but get frustrated (like everyone) once in a while too. But I wouldn't number my socks.

I'd be just like Sean O'hair. He practise really hard and is always focused on the next shot when he is on the course. He seems really nice person and I really wish him luck to the final round at Masters! clapping.gif
Lefty Cat
Tommy Armour III, with a little bit of Phil Mickelson minus the too-tight shirts. Sometimes I overthink shots that aren't that hard. That's just my personality, I guess.

What pro gets the most tang on tour?

Hey buddy, you're absolutely correct, RETIEF GOOSEN would be my best match.

Quiet, almost standoff-ish, and obsessed with his swing, and perfectionism. Great putter (usually), comes thru in pressure situations (most of the time).

However..........I will NEVER try a Belly Putter to try and fix my short game! rolleyes.gif

Well.. seeing as i shoot in the 100's... i think i would be the worst pro ever:) But.. i do have fun and never get mad at bad shots.... so i would enjoy being there...
Wsc04forever
steve stricker/nick watney/lucas glover

head down, trying not to piss anyone off, pretty quiet, get a little annoyed with myself on bad shots

but who knows, "Lights, Camera, Action!!!", maybe i'd turn into a rocco/fuzzy!!!!!

I think Boo's country bumpkin affectation is annoying. If I were a pro, I'm sure I would be one of the people fans complained about being a prick all of the time.

I would want to be like Anthony Kim, a nice guy good game, very down to earth, and he has created a brand for himself the HUGE belts. Maybe a couple of years from now he can create a company selling belts.
MtlJeff
Sergio

not only does my game resemble his (ballstriking better than my handicap would indicate, biggest weakness is making 10 footers for birdie, par). But i'll complain and annoy people when things aren't going well, but am very fun to play with when i'm playing well.

i gave consideration to Vijay and a better interviewing Rory Sabbatini...but i'll go with Sergio

I would like to think I would be like Tom Lehman. Very competitive on the course, but just a real person outside the ropes, makes time for fans and his family is his priority. Not pretenious, stays at Hampton Inn's on the road.

He realizes he is very lucky to make a living doing what he does, he's an all around sports fan, not consumed by golf takes and interest in what's important to other people.

Since we are the same age I can relate to him...except for the fact he has earned over 20 Million in his career smile.gif
Lefty Cat
You may call us country, but we's only southern.

Rocco!

Happy go lucky, can hole some putts every now and then and turn it on otherwise just go about my business whilst smiling, taking jabs at people and HAVING FUN!
iteachgolf
honestly probably Rory Sabbatini, come off as a very fast playing prick but very generous off the course and donate a ton of money to our countries troops.
