I'm from atlanta, where golf season gets underway in march, and in my first year working in nyc. It seems like the 45 degree windy/rainy days will never end. When do you guys normally get out and play? May? How do you cope while everyone else is teeing it up?

On a positive note tomorrow will be ok, 55 and sunny.

Welcome to the NE. smile.gif It's the little extra kick in the head we get each year. Not much you can do about it though, sorry to say. Did you ever try Nintendo Wii golf? It's something anyway...

i'm in the boston area and played yesterday in the rain and muck. it's either that or no golf at all.

Conditions here in upper midwest are really stinky. Temps are OK, sun is shining, but unless you enjoy slogging through mud up to your shoe laces, forget about golf. There are courses trying to open, but the fairways are too wet. I'm not a fan of mud; difficult to walk in and ball just goes splat. Besides, the courses don't necessarily offer any discount just because the course condition is "unplayable". There are enough true die hards that will play regardless of the soggy conditions. Pretty hard to have much fun when the entire course qualifies under rule defining casual water.

It's a little colder and drier than normal this spring. Guys were out playing my place in March. This week played my first 9 on Tuesday and would have played Thursday but I was home w my sick kid. Those were 2 beautiful days.

I hear ya!
Was VERY tempted in playing this morning, but when I heard on the radio that it was gonna be a windy day (wind gust from 20 up to 45 mph), I said to myself "forget it", 'cause, not only was it gonna be tough playing conditions (with the ball), but the wind chill was gonna make it a bit too cold for my taste. I played 'bout 2 Sunday's ago, weather being in the near 50's, but it was windy and cold, which made it a real ROUGH final score, not to mention we (my brother in law & I) were freezing our butts off.

So, what's to do, either suffer while playing on tough conditions (done that) or wait 'till it warms a bit (will do that!!!). Depends on your level of desperation, I guess. After the last Sunday experience, I decided with the latter decision, so hopefully it'll be a good golf day tomorrow.
Besides these choices, just gotta pass the time at the golf stores (Golfsmith & Golf Galaxy), driving range (did that this past Fri.), indoor putting like crazy and plenty of Tiger Woods on the Wii (not a big fan of the video game thing, but maybe you are or could be?).

Hang in there... Once we all start golfing here in NY, we can pretty much stick it out playing on golf courses all the way to around the beginning to middle of November (which I did last year).

It's been a little harsher than normal this year. I've played for the last month, it's not exactly nice weather but it's doable. You just have to insulate yourself properly. fan_1.gif The winter took a real toll on the turf this time though, it's the worst I've seen in the last few years.

how to cope? i really dont know. the weather in general lately has been bumming me out. i like to blame the crap weather for my problems. I'm originally from southern Cal and generally I like the four seasons up here, it's always nice at the start of each one, fall and winter even, it's novel at first, festive even; you kinda enjoy bundling up and wearing the warm clothes...but it's around this time, right now, the last lingering stronghold of winter that is the the most challenging to cope with. Yeah its technically been spring but the trees outside are still completely bare and i'm still wearing my down jacket.

just hang in there. it may not feel like it but we have every reason to believe there will be an end to this bull****.

Here in Maine I consider any golf in April to be a bonus. Course is supposed to open next weekend so I have my fingers crossed.
fodslad
Well here in Edmonton Alberta there is 2 feet of snow and it's below zero so you ain't git it so bad. at this rate we won't be golfing until May.
tomservo18
Yea, I'm going out tomorrow which should be pretty nice if the wind dies down. Maybe I'll play two rounds just to take advantage of the break in the weather.
tiger!!!
ahhhhhh

im so happy i moved here!

It is forecasted to snow here on monday and tuesday. Seriously, it is just getting ludicrous.

Lived in NYC for 7 years and I usually always got out at some point in March, and usually got going by early April for sure.

Not in the Metro area now, but I do know its been a rough start. You should try moving to Toronto! Its even WORSE up here.

HAH! Welcome to NY. I'm in the NY/NJ metro area and I played today in Rockland Co. - with 15mph sustained winds gusting to 40! Played terribly, but wasn't cold and had a fine time. Wear layers, wind shell, and walk - you'll be fine. Those little Hot Hands warmers help too. Hope you don't mind soggy fairways and inconsistent greens, but a bad day of golf is better than a good day of work anyday!

Oh, and this was my fourth round this 'season' too. Played on some nasty days, but still beats playing Tiger '09 on the xbox hiding from ol' man winter.

What a stud. It was about 45F and was windy as heck!

I had my lies adjusted, watched golf, and took my family to the club for dinner. I'll play tomorrow it's only gonna blow 25mph.

I'm about 70 miles north of NYC and I've played at least 15 rounds since the beginning of March at a number of different courses. How I cope? suck it up and get out there tongue.gif

Played this morning around 9AM in pretty crappy conditions. Started off with back to back pars (the 2nd should have been a birdie after a 6 iron from 135 yards to 5 ft) but couldn't hit any GIR the rest of the day and my short game can only carry me so far. Walked away with two skins at the end of the round though and even considered going for 9 more holes but decided to rest up for tomorrow's round wink.gif
armchaircaddy
15 rounds - 70 mi north? NUTS! 45* is like my cutoff point, lower than that and it's really not fun. Wind doesn't bother me that much though, it's kinda hilarious what clubs you need to hit sometimes, and when it actually works out, it's great. Teed off 2 weeks ago at 36* however - thin a 4 iron and you pay dearly from the sting.
drpino
it was a LONG winter and i need my fix. i played Pelham Bay down in the Bronx back on February 16th...that was a futile round. 36-38° with a good amount of wind. greens were frozen and approach shots bounced 15-20ft in the air! LOL.
armchaircaddy
Pelham Bay was actually open in Feb? That must have been miserable.
drpino
yeah, Split was closed though. new clubhouse is nice...had a pretty good lunch there after the round.

I know Dyker Beach and Clearview and maybe a couple others are open all year round. There are some crazy golfers in the city and state of NY.

I played Centennial in Carmel this past Tuesday in low-mid 40°s...rough is dormant and greens are in excellent shape and the early season rate is much easier to swallow than the normal fee. Windy conditions aren't conducive to good scoring on the Lakes 9 though cause of all the elevated tee boxes.
vc222
I praying my company opens an office somewhere that has good weather year round. I've played several rounds this year and during the first few rounds, and shot into the green no matter how high or how much spin, the ball would bounce a 100 feet in the air. I played bethpage Red for the first time today. It was so windy, you can literally hit your driver on the par 3s if you were going into the wind. The gusts were so high, I thought some of the shots were going to back all the way back. Fades turned into slices, draws turned into deadly hooks. I had an awesome time! Welcome to the worst golf area in the US. biggrin.gif BTW, people aren't that nice around here either...
drpino
I'm playing the Red on Thursday. How were the "abbreviated" 1st and 18th holes?

NYers are much nicer than they're made out to be...it's just we don't have time for silly stuff so we come off as being rude. I'd say NY has some of the nicest courses in the country but unfortunately you can't get on most of the best ones though i.e. Winged Foot, Shinnecock, etc but there are plenty of others from some of the greatest architects ever.

Talk with Al Gore??? I think the guy is off the deep end with global warming.
Stankleberry
I enjoy NJ winter golf. I shot my best round ever on the last day of December when it was 39 degrees with 20 mph wind.
Ghost_Orchid
I'm in upstate NY, and played today...high winds, scattered rain (more like annoying misting), chilly. I had 4 layers on (UA long sleeve, Nike long sleeve, Adidas climawear sweater, and rain/wind jacket), all loose and breatheable. Oh, and had warmers in pants pockets.

Was 4 over on the front, 2 putted everything. Had 1 1 putt for my 1 bird of the day. I have to say it was fun playing punch shots all day. This was my most successful day playing in high winds.

I do plan to play tomrrow, should be a warmer and hopefully less winds.

I've played 4.5 rounds already. For the guys with snow problems, just be patient. Warm weather will come fast once it decides to come.
Onebulldogs
In the city, the snow melts pretty much year round. Between the city munis and various long island courses, you should be able to play year round. You just have to get the right clothing and attitude.
nyhc23
Try waking up to this... notice the date

Oh... and it's already snowed twice in April and will snow the next few days and toward the end of April too fool.gif
BILLYMALOOLY
Well i live in north central iowa. Got to play firday the weather was 55 we played 27 holes. But now we are in a blizzerd sunday the 5th wth.
vaca22
In CT I don't even think of playing until April, and even then I use the entire month to practice and prep, so realistically I don't start playing until May. It's a bit of a drag but I can't go out there in long sleeves on windy days and play.
laseranimal
I've been out a bunch since the courses opened

Basically you just deal. Makes you a better player IMHO

I'm fine with winter and I'm fine with spring I just wish the weather would make up it's mind
Kuz013
Im in upstate NY, on Thursday it was 64 and sunny, yesterday it was 30 and snow/rain....you just have to pick your days and hope the nice weather starts early
theballbites
the snow is killing me!!
hogans71
For the most part, golf at this time of the year around Chicago is a bonus. While it may not actually be due to snow (as it has been recently!) you can count on it being far to wet for conditions to resemble a normal round of golf. Snow melt, spring showers- it just adds up to far to much moisture... angry.gif

With that being said, I feel extremely fortunate to played seven rounds in the last 2 1/2 weeks. Although our back nine is still closed, it has still been very nice to get out- the course held up very nicely over the winter months. We've had a ton of snow/rain since last November; an absolute ton...

As a few others have said, and I paraphrase, you do what you gotta do to get out. It may be 48* and 25mph winds but its better than putting in my family room with TGC on in the background...
againstthegrain
Played today in a stiff brezze. There were guys out in shorts.

drpino
it was sunny but breezy up here in Dutchess County (10-20mph, 50-60°) just a bit north of you againstthegrain...absolutely gorgeous day for golf...so i took advantage and walked 27 biggrin.gif
tigers9iron
the solution is move to florida like all the rest of us ex-nyers....florida is ny-south, cmon down....golf all year on great tracks
Kuz013
....and give up my Orange tickets, thats crazy
againstthegrain
drpino,

Do you play Dutchess Country Club?

Florida golf, tarpon, bonefish, permit, no state income tax, ahhhhhh but I'm locked in here for a while ........

If it's any solace to you guys, I live in the Hotlanta Metro, and it -- hasn't been hot. The windiest year on ages. I grew up in Texas and the past few months have brought out the punch shots I learned as a younger golfer. Then, there's the mud. Whack, squish, squish. I have had continual mud on my ball after each shot for months.

Yes, I know the palying season in Atlanta is 12 months a year, but sometimes I wonder. We lived in Upstate NY for several years and, except for rain, the conditions were just excellent for 5-6 months. In Atlanta we have, from Nov to May, brown Bermuda grass that quickly gets worn off and becomes like playing off a brown parking lot-- talk abot muddy, tight lies!

I'm playing tomorrow with 20+ MPH wind and on Tues with a low of 30F and 25 to 30 MPH. The South just ain't what it used to be. Where is Al Gore? Roll on Global Warming!
vwgolfer
Played Bethpage Red on Saturday, windy as heck( hitting 3 wood on no.12 par 3!!), cold, felt like january, greens a little bumpy in spots, it sucks the cold but at least it was not snowing. And they have already started building the tents for the US Open. Hole 1 and 18 fairways is tent city.
fpc
There are golfers and people who play golf. I wear a tee shirt, long sleeve turtle neck, Golf shirt and a sleeveless lined wind shirt. This ,for me, this overs all temps. Try to walk and use it as an on course pracitce session. This way bad bounces and your score doesn't frustrate you and compound the weather aspect.

drpino,

Do you play Dutchess Country Club?

I don't play DCC (not a member) and never have but hope to get out there a few times this season.

I mainly play Casperkill, The Links at Unionvale, Beekman CC, Red Hook, McCann and Applegreens which are close by and occasionally make it over to Centennial, Mansion Ridge, Wiltwyck and Branton Woods (when invited wink.gif) and few other courses up and down the Hudson Valley area. Bethpage is always a welcome car ride too! Headed down to The Red on Thursday...hopefully the weather cooperates.
