Full Version: Miller's Comment On Tiger's and Roger's Golf Shirts

Did anyone hear that comment Miller made about Tiger's shirts. That when he first came out on tour they were so oversized. Then Maltby chimed in that they were the same size shirt as before; implying that he put on a bunch of muscle. Then Miller made the comment: "You'd know about that Roger". Maltby seemed to be ticked by that shot. Miller is not exactly svelt. He can have a nasty cutting tone at times.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA crap why didnt i catch that - Rog walked right into it
fit4golf
I heard that one also. No response by Roger. I think Miller has a hard time not stating the obvious. He likes to tell it like it is and he did, again. I still like him though!

I'm not sure if this was part of the same conversation, but I think I heard Bob Murphy make a comment about Jason Gore and how he didn't like the "muscle shirts" that today's players wear.

Well first of all, it's not like Jason Gore is a small guy, so I suppose anything he wears is going to be a bit snug. I have no idea what prompted him to bust out with this, it was so random at the time. I think this may have been well before the Miller/Maltbie exchange.

I thought it was Peter Jacobsen who said he did not like Gore's shirt or any other "muscle" type shirt even when Tiger wears them because they did not have proper collars. Miller agreed. I do not think it had anything to do with how it fit him.

Calling Jason Gore's shirt a 'muscle' shirt is way more than a stretch of the truth...

Anytime I see Jason Gore wearing a tight shirt (all the time) I think of Chris Farley in Black Sheep asking a hot girl where the weight room is.

Awww were Rodgers feelings hurt? cray.gif Miller is still the best in golf just like Cherrys the best in hockey. I don't always agree with their takes but I respect the fact that they say whatever they want without fear of reprimand.

They were talking about the collars regarding Gore. Honestly, i think the Mock T-shirt look is really lame. I know a few players did similar back in the 60's but the shirts now are more of an execise compression top and are being worn with slacks, which is really odd. At least the Mocks worn in the 60's were a popular fashion trend outside of golf. Gore looks like Athlete up top office down below, 2 styles that IMO shouldn't be mixed.
Ace In The Hole
Was it just me or was Miller in an extra negative mood yesterday? Seemed he had not one positive thing to say.
CarloGolfer
There are like two or three guys on tour who can actually wear the slim fit "muscle shirts." (Villegas, Tiger, etc) If the shirts have a higher mock turtleneck, they're okay. Gary Player always looked classy. When Tiger wears one, generally he looks good. He can carry the look and I give him a pass. But a guy like Paul Goydos on Sunday of last years TPC? WTF?

LOL, this must've been removed but funny none the less.
cohenfive
what about the shirts that phil has been wearing? the high collar (ok imo) and the very short sleeves (not a good look for phil imo)...they look like they are mis-sized on him. another one of the guys who should wear a 'looser' fit i think.

b81smith
anyhow, I caught it and thought it was funny as hell - - he mean't tiger is putting on muscle and maltby put on weight too but another way.

Same size? beee.gif
Perhaps the labels both say XL, but I think that Nike may have changed the dimensions.
kemau
this was brought up maybe 2 or 3 years ago IIRC but tiger also mentioned it himself a few times.......he wore the bigger shirts because from the influence of seeing his dad in them. once he started getting jacked he went down a size to be better fit along with wearing the mock turtleneck shirts. there's no way it's the same size and he filled so much room with muscles. otherwise we'd be asking for the results of his drug tests a lot more for an explanation

I disagree. Looser shirts only contribute to looking worse. A correctly fitted shirt always looks better than a loose one.

Phil is better dressed now than he ever has been. Last year, however, when he tried to wear the mock turtleneck short sleeve all black number... two thumbs down.

Also, no white belt for Phil.

Phil should wear the shirts he has now in black or generally dark colors. Anything but white and a white belt.

but hey, progress is progress...

I work for an NBC affiliate, and I cannot stand Johnny Miller as a golf commentator. Everything he says has the underlying current of "I could have done it better." Bitter old guy syndrome, I guess.

The comment that really, really, really irritated me yesterday was that Sean O'Hair "would never be 'whole' again" until he resolved his relationship with his father. What a presumptuous load of crap. My girlfriend, who has only recently been exposed to televised golf, picked up on that immediately and had the same reaction as me.

There really aren't any golf commentators that I like, but Miller is the worst by a long shot.

Miller used to be pretty good IMO, about 10-12 years ago, now he just sounds pompous.

Thats because he's wearing a white belt with black shoes and black hat. You just can't do that.

Or what about when Jim Nantz asked about who was the Tiger in there day and someone replied Jack but Miller said he always seemed to play well against Jack. Hilarious!

i wonder who dresses him--certainly not his wife...but i still think the sleeves on his current shirts look bad--just lengthen them. agree on the belt.

Could the situation with Johnny be similar to that of Howard Stern in his movie "Private Parts"?:

Kenny: How could this be?

Kenny: : All right, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?
Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day.

Just a small correction, but the movie you're talking about is Tommy Boy...

Richard, who is your favorite little rascal, is it Alfalfa or spanky???

CLASSIC!!!

Can you imagine Miller 10 years from now? Talk about being a crotchety old man!

He somehow seems to think he could have hung with Tiger in his day. I know he won a U.S. Open, but who do you guys think is the modern day equivalent of Johnny Miller?
jimbonecrusher
How funny. You guys are talking about clothes and how good they look on people. Is your favorite show, "**** Eye for the Straight Guy"? Who cares what they were. The final number and who hoists the trophy is all that matter. Wearing a white belt is like wearing a thumb ring. It doesn't make you play better, but makes you look rather funny.

I really don't mean any offence to Jason Gore. He has a very likable personality and I'm sure he would laugh off any jests about his size.

I turn the sound down for Miller after about 5 minutes, he is just that annoying, right from the tone of his voice to his petty, classless comments. Easily the worst out there.

I agree with the previous poster, it doesn't matter what you look like out there, everyone looks good (except Camilo biggrin.gif ) hoisting a trophy.

Was there anything positive to say about sundays round? Ohair choking his brains while tiger plays a marginal round of golf to win the tourney. Tigers putt at 18 was great and I don't want to take anything away from that but , Ohair was missing fairways with a 5wood and greens with pitching wedges. On the PGA tour your not supposed to come from 5 back on sunday with a 2 under round.Even tiger tried to give it back with the bogey on 17. Tigers greatest advantage is that everyone is scared sh**less of him and they just fold. I hated watching the final round and really was in a negative mood watching it. I definetly see why Miller would come off like that, he was saying what half the people watching were feeling " Here we go again Tiger plays good ,but not great and another chump hands him the trophy" Alot of times Tiger goes out and rips the Trophy out of their hands and sometimes like last sunday, his playing partner not only gives him the trophy they also inscribe his name on it free of charge.

i have 2 of his shirts from 2 years ago. both are size medium, and are tailored to have shorter, tighter sleeves.

Maltby and Miller have known each other for about 40 years.
Anyway, Miller's comment about Tiger (and Maltby) filling out their shirts was a gem.
Miller continues to be the best booth color man. Faldo is not even in the same league.
On course there are lots of good ones. Maltby is excellent. Judy Rankin is the best who ever carried a microphone on a course, but I don't know if she is still working these days.

Miller was at it again this weekend. As Camilo Villegas walked across a green, Miller commented something to the effect that he was an example of how all the European golfers were sharp dressers. After a delay long enough for a producer to have prompted him in his ifb (earpiece), he broadened that to include South American golfers.

He's out of touch; petty; nasty; a narcissistic clown...and those are his good points...

Not comparing myself to TW, but I too used to wear XL or L and now often wear M depending on the manufacturer of the shirt. This is especially true of non-golf apparel. Sizes just seem to keep getting bigger!! Americans (of which I am one) are basically bloated pigs who don't take care of themselves; so as America gets fatter, clothing sizes adjust. What used to be a "Large" is actually today's "Medium" and what used to be an "XL" is now "L". Notice how McDonald's stock price hasn't suffered in this current recession... smile.gif

Side note - I agree that Phil needs to lose the new shirts and white belts...While he's noticably in better shape these days, someone's gotta tell him that he still can't pull that stuff off!! LOL
jeffc
anyone see the size of miller's shirt he was wearing in the booth sat and sun? they were like 2 sizes too big - he was swimming in it. Not saying it has to fit like camillo's but heck, miller is sitting in a booth, not even swinging a club. Miller is the last guy that should be commenting on style.

Maybe you should relax and take a good natured ribbing when thrown out there. Yet again, maybe your are pissed, because your pants and shirt are cutting off circulation. BTW, do you go to the course to impress people with your clothes, or your play? I personally have never gotten anybody to pay me at the end of the round because of the clothes that I wore, but instead because of how well I played.
nevets88
I agree that Miller's remarks about O'Hair was something he shouldn't have said and he does sound like he's living in the past, plus he sounds out of it sometimes, for example when asked best guitarist after people are mentioning EC, SRV, he mentions Glen Campbell (spelling?)

But he does have interesting things to say about playing golf and the swing, and even then, sometimes he says something that makes you do a double take.
