The course you want to play, between those 2 is the Bayonet, not the BlackHorse. Trust me.
You also may want to consider, if given the time, to get out at Pacific Grove GC in Pacific Grove. Quite possibly the best bang for your buck in the entire state of California.
Back nine has better views of the ocean than Spyglass and Spanish Bay, with only Pebble having nicer views..in fact Jack Neville who designed PB also designed the back nine at Pacific Grove. It's not a long course but I guarantee you'll hit every club in the bag...all this for less than 45 bucks. Because of it's yardage, you can play in 3 hours. I love playing there.
It has been considered for many years to be a historical landmark in NorCal, but for some odd reasons, it has never been officially deemed a historical place. The old railroad stations along the front nine have been lost but there is a lot of history there. Playing at Pacific Grove is special indeed. I liken it to, in some ways, to doing the Sheep Ranch thing in Bandon. Everyone goes to Bandon/Pacific and nobody goes to Sheep Ranch. Well, everyone goes to Spy and Pebble, but nobody goes to Pacific Grove.
One last thing you could consider is not playing either the Bayonet/BlackHorse courses and trade a round there for Pasatiempo up in Santa Cruz. The Renaissance Team's work is done and Tom Doak has transformed Pasa back to it's original glory. I played it last November and it was truly an awesome, fantastic place. Pricey, but that course is truly worth every penny. Can't say that about Spy or Pebble.
Pasatiempo would be great, but for $220 it's a bit pricey, and as I'll be going out as a single I'd rather wait till I could play it with some friends. Some friends in high school played it and thought it was the best around the area (I grew up in Livermore). Same with Spy and Pebble, although my friends that have played Pebble didn't really enjoy the 6 hour round.
I may take a look at Pacific Grove if I get another day, but Bayonet/Blackhorse probably give me a better test of golf. (Used to play off 2 hdcp, now more like a 5)
Has anyone played both courses after they reopened? From the website it sounds like most of the renovations were to the clubhouse.
