What made me just think about this was the worst shot I have ever seen by my favorite golfer.

What a moron.... Ernie Els at Bay Hill just tried to hit a 3-wood out of the rough and only popped it out a few feet. He didn't even get it back to the fairway, it just stayed in the rough.

I also watched Keith Burt at Doral completely and utterly chunk an iron from the 3rd fairway. I mean, he didn't even get it halfway to the green.

So what are some of the shots you have seen that make you guys feel better about your games?
tarik
Tom Kite shank a drive left into a gallery.
oldpalchamp
Jack Nicklaus dead off the hosel at Augusta #12.
pshyeah
Sometime last year when Tiger still had his 2 iron, he was trying to hit a hard stinger of the tee and caught it about 3 inches fat.

So the pros are mortal!

Goosen's big blow up on Sunday last year showed me that EVERYBODY'S game can go down the toilet pretty quick. vava.gif
allsouthpaw08
hahahahahahaha a couple years ago when rocco mediate shanked, skulled, blocked, well just about everything possible with a 3 wood right into the hazard 10 yards in front of him!!!! hahahahaha
Simp
Nicky Price half topping a three wood into a hazard no more than 30 yards in front of him at the Open Championship several years ago.

Greg Kraft puking on his shoes (figuratively speaking of course) and chunking his second shot into the water on 18 at Doral a few years ago.

Greg Norman whiffing his opening tee shot at Augusta in 1993

I was only teasing about the last one! cheesy.gif

I can't remeber who it was but the one that comes to mind was at least weeks tournament and someone double hit a lob wedge next to the green.

I would think a pro would be better with his wedge than I am cheesy.gif

WOW, that is a TUFF one........seen so many over the years.........

Two that are right off the top of my head were carbon copies of one another on the same hole, but, during different rounds of the Byron Nelson when it was @ Preston Trail in Dallas.......Leonard Thompson and Ben Crenshaw both hit what I'd describe as "top snap hooks" dead left into the left rough on the 7th hole......neither hit it 125 yards.........classic PANIC "water locks"......Thompson punched out and got up and down from 100 yards or so.....can't remember with Crenshaw......but they were BEYOND "gross" golf shots.......wink.gif

Oh, another one.........I was playing in the Oklahoma Open @ Oak Tree directly behind Scott Verplank when he had the driver "yips".........we had to wait on the tee of the 16th hole (I believe).......this particular hole goes downhill and has a tree in the middle of the fairway with water about 300 off the tee and water all along the left side to the green.......green sits right up against the water on the left.......to the right was a "levee??"/big hill and Verplank hit a relatively solid drive that shot of at least 30 degrees right of his target......I mean at least 100 yards right of his intended target........it was VERY HARD to watch, and as Verplank was struggling so badly at the time, sorta' sad to watch.......damn sure was hard to stand up there 10 minutes later and hit a decent driver after watching his drive.......wink.gif
ba_priddy
I was a kid, but I remember watching Kite's shot live on tv. I think it was at the PGA, maybe Shoal Creek.
stickman
Frank Lickliter topped a 5 wood about 50 yards into a hazard about 3 years ago.
sergizmo
Elkington topping his 2 iron about 40 yards in one of the early season celebrity tourneys a couple years back.

Langer shanking 2 wedges in the same round last year (don't remember touney).

You must have several more to share with us. It's all in good fun. wink.gif

Ok.....I'll tell one on myself....

When I first turned professional I played in a 100k tournament in Myrtle Beach @ Oyster Bay and Marsh Harbor......cannot remember which I started on, but, I think it was Marsh Harbor.......the 10th hole is a slight dogleg left of about 400 yards (IF memory serves me) and was my first hole of the round and of the year AND it was VERY, VERY cold and windy.......sleeted the next day during play......and I was REALLY anxious......(not playing very well at the time)......playing with Gregg Twiggs and Calcavechia I think.......Twiggs for sure as he was a bit of a smartass.......to the right of the fwy was about 40 yards or so of pine trees and then the driving range.......a range FULL of players warming up for their round.......

Anyway, I remember I was hitting a 3 wood........

I THINK I "blacked out" for a nano-second right at impact........but I do remember clearly having the WORST feeling impact of my life transferred into my body as well as having NO idea where the ball went.......I looked down and I'd taken a substantial divot and by the position of the tee I'd hit the ball almost OFF of the toe of the club........hehehe.......I ALMOST missed the entire ball.......I asked, "does ANYONE have ANY idea WHERE that ball went?" ......nobody by the tee had a clue, but, thankfully a marshall had seen it from the fairway go straight up and DEAD right........yep, right into the MIDDLE of the driving range.......

Well, you wanna' talk about embarassing......I asked, "is the range OB?".......Nope........bad answer as I was sorta' hoping it was........well anyway, I walked into the range and you should have heard the laughter from the tee (with my buddies giving me TOTAL and COMPLETE hell).......as luck, or bad luck, would have it we FOUND the ball in the middle of a bunch of Titleist practice balls.......

Now, I've said this many times, the TOUGHEST shot I've EVER faced was the shot out of the middle of the driving range @ Marsh Harbor to get back into the 10th fairway........had 30 yards till I got TO the pine forest.......then about a 10 yard opening between trees and 40 yards or so of pine forest then 30 or so yards of fwy to stop the ball in before running out of open space......

Best shot I ever hit in my life to get it back into the middle of the fairway.....bar none......ESPECIALLY as it was immediately after the WORST shot I'd ever SEEN, much less hit.......LOL.......

Then a 4 iron to 10' and 1 putt.......PAR.......

Now, the reason I remember POSITIVELY that I was playing with Twiggs is this......I'd known the guy for 20 minutes and as soon as I made the 10' he looks at me with a VERY "sarcastic" smirk and says......"nice par"........LOL........classic line if I say so myself.......wink.gif

Another one.......the 1st PGA Tour event I played in was the Byron Nelson in 86'......qualified in the 4 spotter.......Blaine meets me on Tuesday to walk me through the registration process and then introduce me to the Maxfli rep......then he, Bill, Lietzke, and I were going to play a practice round.........

Anyway, the locker room at the Sports Club is kind of a dungeon......you walk through the pro shop and open a door then down about 20' or so of stairs and then through another door and whalllah.....the locker room.......

The first people we see when we walk into the locker room are Tom Watson, Byron Nelson, and Greg Norman standing there "visiting"......(Norman had to WD later due to his back I think)......so its NOT like I was enough of a "basket case" as it was and then I see these 3 and then it dawns on me that "I'm trying to beat these guy's this week"......Byron was probably 70 at the time and I couldn't have given him a match........LOL.......couldn't have passed a BB.......wink.gif

Well, actually played well in the practice round, but, I'd known the 3 guy's I was playing with for many years so I was "comfortable"........then came the 1st round on Thursday.....

On the range I was quitely "calling my shots" to my caddie and best friend........just "striping" that sucka'.......straight through the bag.......

It MIGHT be a 100 yard walk to the 1st tee @ The Sports Club........maybe.......and by the time I got to the tee I wasn't sure IF I could tee the ball up and was ALMOST positive that I'd totally lost my ability to find any part of the clubface with a golf swing........ MAXIMUM A N X I E T Y.........hehehe.......

Anyway, there is literally a 40 - 50 mph wind blowing (highest cut in the history of the Nelson since it moved to the Sports Club and still is I think??).......well the 1st hole is a DINKY par 4 of maybe 390 yards down hill all the way........the wind is blowing so hard and from right to left........OB down the left by the corporate tents........then the starter says......."you gentlmen did see the addendum to the rules sheet did you not?"......of course my playing partners, Mike Gove and Tom Byrum had done so.......but A.D.D me.....hehehe.......

Addendum states, "inside edge of cart path directly left of fairway is considered OUT of Bounds".........NOW I'm really A N X I O U S.......just saw 3 guy's start their tee shots OVER the cart path that is NOW OB........NOW I have to do it........

I hit a 1 iron........and it LOOKED GREAT.......started down the right rough line.......held its line.......and then drew right dead in the middle of the fairway and ran and ran and ran.......right up by the other guy's shots........

Now to the bad part.........LOL........

I swear my hands were vibrating like I'd just touched a "hot" wire immediately after stepping out of the shower........I looked at my club and the paint from the tee was on the toe.......waaaaaaaaaaaaay out on the toe........way, way, way out on the toe......in fact, this shot LITERALLY did not hit a portion of the face that was grooved.......I'd hit a "NO groove knuckle toe draw".......LOL........

GREAT shot if you can groove it..........smile.gif

"I can't remeber who it was but the one that comes to mind was at least weeks tournament and someone double hit a lob wedge next to the green."

That was Tim Clark at Torrey Pines.

Patrick Sheehan topping his first tee shot as a PGA Tour pro on the 1st tee of TPC Scottsdale in the Phoenix Open. I think he was nervous!
RSchaffer29
I saw Rory Sabbatini top a 3 wood at the range at last year's PGA at Baltusrol

he then wiped the grip to try to blame it on the slippery grip but he knew everyone was watching
kblakeney35
Some no name guy at the John Deere Classic last yr, saw in person this guy blade a shot out of a bunker on the right side of the green, into a pond on the left side of the green.

Another one that I remember, although it was really not that bad was Tiger on the 10th tee at Bethpage in the first round . He was playing with Els and starting on the 10th tee. He was hitting driver and got way under the ball. He ended up just barly making the fairway some 230 yards away. Els was in the background with a smug smile on his face.

Tiger ended up hitting a 2 iron to like 10 feet and then went on to wipe Ernie in the tourney.

Hank Kuehne's drive at the 18th at Doral this year. Straight of the heel of the club and it made the worst sound I've ever heard.

Thanks for the great stories slicefixer! clapping.gif

This illustrates the effect of pressure. When it really matters under pressure not many people can play to their potential.

Shooooot......ANYBODY who says they "haven't choked" either has NOT played much competitive golf OR they are a L I A R.........(but I have hit some good un's too......wink.gif) ..and your most welcome.....IF a person can't laugh at themselves then I figure they have no right to laugh at anyone else.......wink.gif

Ian Poulter hit two of the purest shanks in a row last year, though I can't remember what tourney, I think it could of been The masters.

16 on the East Course may be the toughest driving hole on the golf course from the tips. The fairway is only about 40 yds wide in the landing area and the lake runs the entire left side of the hole and there is the thickest Blackjack forest you have ever seen down the right side. It drops about 50 ft. from the tee to the fairway and you have to carry it about 230 to make the fairway over one of the nastiest ravines I've seen in a long time. It looks like you are trying to hit an island green with a driver. You can't feel the wind (which seems like is ALWAYS blowing 30-40 mph at Oak Tree) down in the fairway (but you can damn sure feel it on the tee), so hitting your second shot, which can be anywhere from a 6 iron to a wedge, to a green the size of your living room with a lake on the left and DEEP bunkers on the right can be a little unsettling...

I've seen plenty of 6s, 7s and 8s made there.

15, 16 and 17 on the East Course take their toll on players in the Oklahoma Open every year...
slicefixer
Yep, agree 100%.......been so long that the trees on the right are now a "forest"......wink.gif

I would say the East is the equal to the Men's Club IMOP......the first time I played in the OK Open I shot 73 in the first round and was in 3rd place......71 led (1 over, Par 70).....the wind blew so hard that Doug Tewell got in an argument with the OSGA officials/Hugh Edgemon regarding the course set-up and resigned from the OSGA and Oak Tree......he shot 81......ball was oscilating so badly on the greens that a 1' was terrifying.......As an OU alum I'm SURE you've experienced the same thing many times......just pure hell under those conditions......wink.gif
TNSooner
I remember that argument. I had just finished and watched Tewell throw his card at Mark Fuller and Doug Brecht and tell them it was the most unfair conditions that he had ever seen. Bill Barrett had to step in to keep those two (Tewell and Edgemon) from killing each other...
ericgarr
Ernie must make Tiger nervous because I think last year at Bayhill Tiger fatted his 3 wood off the first tee and only hit it about 180 yards. They showed Ernie looking way down the fairway for the ball then realizing that the ball didn't go anywhere he looked at Tigers club and just sort of had a "I can't believe that" face on.
slicefixer
LOL.....smaaaaaaaaaaall world.....smile.gif.....Mark was my roomate our freshman year and is still a great friend......and Mr. Barrett......what a guy......he was very, very nice to me.....IS he still allive? He was a helluva' guy.......
pitbull808
Worse live shot I've ever seen was Bubba Watson hitting a drive on the 1st hole at Waialae at the Sony Open this year. The drive flew over our heads as he attempted to cut the corner but pulled it. It soared over the trees hitting the roof of a house being built with the loudest "crack"....sounded like a gunshot, ricocheted off the roof landing in a swimming pool next door in the middle of a group of partyers watching the play. I think there were a few spilled drinks from that shot. biggrin.gif

Saturday at '05 Masters Ian hit two shots that were awful-a total push slice with a 2 or 3 iron on 13 and a complete shank with a 5 iron on 4. Also Darren Clarke's shank at 17 at the '04 PGA, or Brad Faxon's whiffed chip at Barclay's last year.

Both double bogeyed 14 after finding the sand. They each needed an up and down, but only managed "an up, and up, and over, and down." Hey, that sounds like what you'd hear in an aerobics class. rolleyes.gif

Slicefixer do you play any more competetive tournament golf?

What was your best finish in a PGA tournament?

Worst shot I have ever seen was in this year's Bayhill Tourney on Sunday Stuart Appleby stubbed a chip on the green that almost went in the water. Horrible for a pro!
slicefixer
Missed 3 cuts.......and thats it......never had my big tour card.......3 Q schools......1 Finals......Hogan/Nike had some success, but, not the "show"........it was fun while it lasted though.......or at least MOST of it was fun.........wink.gif

Worst shot I ever saw was Mark Calcavecchia at the
17th at the Ryder Cup at Kiawah Island. He had been
4 up at one time in the match and lost two holes in a row.

That wicked hole played about 190 that day as I remember
and his shot didn't get halfway across the pond. I felt
bad for him, he looked destroyed later on.

Several years ago in a Skins game in Australia at Laguna Quays, Greg Norman had a 3 wood into the green on a par 5 and hit it right on the head. I mean like sole of the club just contacting the ball on the upswing sort of stuff. A real cold-top. It popped up in the air and then rolled about 15 feet.
app10
At Spyglass (At&T tourney) a few years ago, I had the privilege of seeing Phil Mickelson tee off on the ninth hole. A nice hard swing... and the ball hit the trunk of a tree with the loudest thwack you've ever heard (echoes are legendary at Spyglass) about 70 feet in front of him, then dropped into the thick rough before the forward tees. Thank goodness he didn't pull down his pants for the next shot.
themouth1
I saw a player (I want to say it was Jeff Oglivey) a few years ago at TPC during the Wednesday practice round hit a duck hook off the first tee that went through the trees and almost took off John Daly's head as he was walking up the second fairway drinking a soda and smoking a cigarette...He teed another ball did it again. This one came close to killing a marshall. He teed a third ball and striped it just left of the third bunker. He just walked off the tee smiling. I think he forgot about the first two as soon as he hit them. I wish I had that kind of memory...
freddiec
Blain MacCallister hit a worm burner at the Bank Boston classic on the last hole of the tournament, I think he was tied for the lead and he almost topped it, it didn't go but 4 feet off the ground for about 150yds, then it ran out a bit. I'll never forget that.
Sandy_Hook
The most excruciating shot I've ever seen was Doug Sanders missed putt on the 18th green (I forget which course) to win the British Open Championship, must have been in the 1960s. It was an 18 incher and he stood over it for the longest time, and then bent over to brush away what appeared to be a non-existent loose impediment from his line. He straightened up, and without taking any time to line it up again took an awful jab at it and missed it badly to the right. As the ball was passing the hole, he kind of reached after it with his putter as if to rake it back and have another try. It was a painful episode.

Anybody remember Tommy Nakajima in the road hole bunker?
jackn
Miguel Jimenez at the european open. It was the last on i think the new course there and he was hitting his 3rd into the par five and chunked it into the water. I gotta admit i thought it was quite funny as it was the first time i had seen a pro duff it anywhere.
