I may be spending a few years in Naples Italy. There doesn't seem to be a tremendous amount of golf over there. Has any been near the area that could recommend some courses over there?

Back in the 90's I was flying out of Brindisi and there was a course down in Taranto area off Highway SS106 called Riva dei Tessali that was pretty nice. It would take you about 2 hours from Naples to get there. You can Google it and see how tight it is just from the Satellite Photo. It was in the middle of no where so you actually had to know where you were going to get there. The course was pretty nice and always in pretty good shape. The best part was there was never anyone on it. We would arrive before they opened and tee off and pay after we played 18, have a big bowl of pasta and bread and head back out for another 18. The course was tight, really tight! The first hole was a dog leg right like I had never seen, then everything else was pretty straight forward. They didn't have a pro shop so we had to bring our own pellets. If your in the Military the MWR at Naples will be able to get you hooked up with some local courses, there is probably an Italian/American Golf Association on the base. If you get up north there are all kind of courses there, even an Arnold Palmer Design. We played that one for two bags or Oreo Cookies...crazy story! Golf for the Italians was more of a fashion thing than for the hard corp American golfer, it was a place to be seen and meet. Good luck, you'll love it over there!

Hi, I live in northern Italy, so I do not have a first hand experience. I talked to some friends and the best course in the area is Volturno Golf, they played a minor Tour event this year with good reviews. Also in Naples is Circolo Golf Napoli, it's a 9 holes layout in the area that used to be in the NATO compounds, not great but central.
In any case, in about one hour you can be in Rome, where quality and quantity of golf is really much better.
Hope it helps, and welcome in Italy!

hi there, i'm fron the north of italy too.
in Naples you'll find a couple of decent courses whereas in near Rome you'll have really good historical ones where from time to time the italian open of the european tour is held.
a couple sof hours south-east and you'll find riva dei tessali and metaponto , in both courses are held challenge tour (mini-tour)events.
what you'll find everywhere will be excellent food and wine and, if you are single, gorgeous women;)
