Thought i would start this post after getting slated for not rating JB Holmes' talent level on another post. If this event ever existed (and it should!) how different would the leaderboard look to a regular tour event? Would the same guys be at the top? Would any of the top guys struggle to hit their hat? Would some of the less successful players thrive on modern technology being taken out of other players hands and having to rely on raw talent? Some guys are more talented ball strikers and shot makers and others benefit more from modern technology. Lets have your thoughts...

i would bet that if the pga tour were to do a one time event and make it mandatory that the top 50 play in it(barring injury), it would be one of the most popular tv events ever in golf. i have always wanted to at least see tiger and phil play with the type of equipment that jack used. make the course set up the same way with the same mowing techniques and grass height used back then, i would watch it without a doubt. and jb holmes would be nowhere near the top.

I know over here in the UK we have a hickory open where you have to use all the old stuff. Brings out a real decent field of leading amateurs, pro's, etc.

Its a pointless debate, of course they aren't going to be as good, the course will be too long. It's not like these guys grew up make these antique clubs. 99% of them will have never hit them.
Now if you were talking even mid 90's clubs that would be interesting.

They aren't playing with hickories and gutta percha but if you have a DVR or a bad case of insomnia, try catching the old episodes of Challenge Golf on the Golf Channel. They seem to be rerun most Wednesday nights (or Thursday mornings) at 3am CDT. These matches were played in the early 60's. Palmer and Player in their primes against the best on tour at the time. You get a real feel of what golf was like before it became whatever you think it is now.
You will be surprised, me thinks.

There are tournaments like this all the time.
http://www.hickorygolf.com/Last November I was in Vegas and I believe it was the US Hickory Golf Championships which actually had some ex-PGA Tour Pros in the field.
I can't remember the website or results but I'll try to find them.
