Do you all think watching golf on tv makes you a better player?

That seems entirely impossible. Please explain.

i don't know how much watching it on tv helps, but i've gone to the masters the past two years and i feel like it has made me a better player. I don't know what it is, but i always come back playing better. I'm going this year so i hope the same happens again.

My first experience with golf was when a co-worker took me to a driving range at lunch. He showed me the most fundamental elements of the golf swing (proper grip, straight left arm, bend your knees, stick your butt out) and that was it. I figured the rest out by watching videos online and golf on TV. I was shooting under 100 4 months after that fateful day at the range, and now I'm completely obsessed. So for me, golf has DEFINITELY made me better.

I think there may be benefits...
If you are a student of the game, like many here on GolfWRX, then yes, it has the potential to improve your game. I think you also need to incorporate the whole package of what is available to you. Like anything else, it is a tool that you can use. You should never substitute TV coverage for the advice of a teaching pro and/or club fitter.
If you include some of the learning shows that are on the Golf Channel, and if you know what to look for on a broadcast, especially now that they are showing super slow motion hi-def of various players swings, with occasional good explanations- that can have an influence on your swing.
I think there is also a lot of course management that people can learn from watching TV- assuming you are a lower handicap and have some of the shots the pros may have. If you're a 25 handicap, watching Tiger or Phil may not help you much. In fact, in those cases, it may frustrate you a bit because you can't do what they do and may have a false belief that you can.
So it may depend... depends on the player that you are and what you are looking for on TV.

My advice, watch the LPGA. Their game is closer to most people's game, which is by no mean a slam to anyone. They're playing a shorter course with smarter shots. If 280 is bombing it, I'm all about that!
