Looking for a good course to play this Thursday and Friday? Anyone have a recommendation...played HH National in BLuffton before, thought it was nice at the time...but it is $96 to play there now. Anyone have any alternate suggestions.....public not private.
Any quick feedback appreciated.

We're in the high season for Hilton Head so $96 is about as good as it gets. Rose Hill is $75 right now and it just re-opened Labor Day last year after sitting unmaintained for a good while. You could try Old South off island and maybe Shipyard on island. I heard Shipyard has redone their fairways with a new type of grass and it's supposed to be nice.

I played shipyard in the Summer and it was absolutely aweful big time dissapointment.
I've played Old south and like it a lot. Oyster Reef is also a great course layout, although the greens were pretty burnt out during the summer.

I would say Old South. Some of the best views for as inexpensive at is...a nice course as well.

Going with Palmetto Hall....Robert Cupp. Heard it is "different" and "geometric??". One of the courses I have not played on the island, so will see tomorrow. Got a good deal on the price and they said both of the Palmetto Hall courses are in great shape.....but dont they all say that when you call???

Let me know how the Cupp course is I've never played it. The "geometric" thing is that all the lines and shapes on the course are done in a very hard edged geometric style rather than a softer, flowing style as with most courses.

I played Palmetto Hall's Cupp course a few weeks ago. It is a fine course, IMO with a number of very tough holes. The "geometric" thing is oversold. Many of the original sharp edges have been softened because they were difficult to maintain, and the course doesn't look like those aerial photos at all. The course was in decent shape. Fairways were good and the greens were very good. Condition was typical of the better public courses around the island.
Enjoy your round!

I remember when the Cupp course was new, I guess it was about 15 years ago or so. Bob Cupp commented that the geometric layout was done as the course was desinged on a CAD software package and it only had straight/geometric angles to work with. The intent was to do the design that way and then soften it up during the construction phase. Once he got the design done in CAD he liked the way it looked so he decided to leave it as is.
I assumed it would look different from ground level at least. It's kind of like Long Bay Club up in Myrtle Beach; the aerial photos make the course look entirely different with the vast waste areas between holes.

Just got done, ...some tough driving holes (narrow)...but receptive greens...so it balanced out. Some greens had a bunch of different levels, but a good course I would play again. Look for deals, because we got on for $76....normally $129. As far as the geometric thing goes....you can see it in several places, but it does not look like the aerial photos. I was actually not sure about the whole geometric thing...because I personally think it is ugly, but it is not too noticeable on the course. There is a square green and some square bunkers. The "mounds" that line the fairways do come to a peek...like the picture above...but it isn't as noticeable as in the phone. Greens were smooth...but with all of the overseeding, hard to get them roll as fast as bent. Nevertheless, they rolled true....so it really didn't matter.
I would definitely play it again FWIW.

Where did you find the $76 deal? I'm going down for a few days next week and may need to grab a time somewherre at the last minute. Everything I've seen is $100+ right now.
