Hi all. I'm heading to Bandon Dunes in May for a short buddy trip. We're playing all 3 courses in two days with caddies. Looking for some insight on what to expect weather-wise, where to get a good steak and beer, and any other suggestions/advice. Thanks.

I was in Bandon for a week last May. The weather is always hit or miss, but when I was there it was low to mid 50's and overcast for most of it. Didn't rain though. Just pack clothes for all different conditions. Also regarding food, the pub at the resort is amazing. You won't find better food off site. Also if you guys are the gambling type, there is a casino in Coos Bay which I enjoyed. Pretty small but has everything you need. Have a good time, if you never been you are in for an amazing trip, and start working on hitting hybrids from around greens and your putter, A lob wedge is almost useless around the greens out there.
The Duck
Wife and I played there in September.
Had great weather for OR. but I would have to research for MAY weather.
The Pub at the course had great food and service . The main restaurant had good food too but a bit pricey.
(as if the Golf was not overpriced enough)

Other course to look at is Bandon Crossings south of the town.

Lunch, dinner, fine dining, seafoods, prime steaks, all alcohol beverages, ocean view, reservations recommended.

Was probably the best place in town to eat and excellent views.

We went last July -- three and a half days, six rounds and a nine hole round.
We're booked to go again in late June this year.

Not sure about rain but you need to plan for it and most certainly wind. We layered clothing for we found bright skies and high 60's temps on Bandon Trails, but we also had a light mist and fog on Pacific one morning.

It is great, great golf and unbelievably memorable. Our caddies were good. The courses (and most especially the wind) took some getting used to. We found a review of the course architecture online and took that along to give us some background on what was special about each of the course designs.
All really are a bit different.
My favorite was Bandon. Number 4 heads towards the ocean for the first time with course routing, and then you hit 5 which is a great number 1 hdcp hole. A tee shot over three mounds and then a long second straight into the wind with jail and mounding on both sides of the fairway.
Our hdcps ranged from 5-9 and we played the green tees the first time on the courses...black the second rounds but either works. The fairways are generous.

McDonald (fourth course) is supposed to open by our June trip...you might want to see if there is a chance for you to look at that as well. There is a nine hole course at the practice range and if you have a few minutes, it gives you a good sampling of the firmness and effects of wind as far as what to expect on the courses.

On site, the Lodge restaurant is nice and our meal there was fine. McKee's pub was better suited for our group as we were tired, wanted a beer and good food without too much hassle.
Down the road near the main docks in Bandon, we really enjoyed a seafood restaurant -- don't remember the name but it had a second story and looked out over the fishing boats.

Accomondations are good...people are helpful. The only downside is getting to Bandon because you are so ready to be there. Oh, and did I mention the wind? We were told we had 35 sustained and gusts to 44 one afternoon. It just made the golf better.

My aunt lives in Bandon, and we got to go there 2 years ago in May. Everything that was said was spot on, the main restaurant (not the pub) is good but pricey. The pub has very good food as well, I got a club sandwich and fries which were freshly made and the service was outstanding.

As to the course, you definately should have gore-tex on hand. The day I played Bandon Dunes, it was windy on some holes but nice on some holes where I was taking the jacket off. I had on some Under Armor coldgear along with a collared long sleeve shirt. The temps will be in the mid to high 50's but with the wind chill will feel like high 40's, if there is no wind then it will feel like low 60's. I had a caddie, but it is not required. You can rent a pull cart.

Bandon is a very small beach town so there isn't a lot to do, they roll up the sidewalks at night. You could drive up to The Mill casino which was previously mentioned; although, it too is very small so don't expect a lot. There is a small coffee shop in town called Brewed Awakenings where my aunt works part-time, you can get a nice coffee there along with a pastry.

Have fun biggrin.gif

I have been to Bandon more times than I can count. Goto the Wild Rose for dinner one night. Its one of the best restaurants I have been to bar none anywhere in the country. Its small and near the waterfront and owned by a couple who met in Culinary School. The food is amazing. When I moved out to Tennessee the last thing I did in Oregon was drive out of my way to the Wild Rose for dinner.

I've lived in Oregon my whole life. Expect wind, expect fog, expect drizzle. Expect sun. But don't expect much warmer than 60 in May. Layers is the key.

I grew up down there and will definately second Lord Bennett's. That place is amazing, and as previously stated, the view is unbelieveable. I have even seen whales breeching out in the ocean from my table there. Also, if you have time hit old town Bandon for some great, fresh out the water fish and chips. As far as the weather goes, I can't say anything that hasn't already been said, just pack for every condition.

Sorry but I forgot one thing that proved helpful. Bring a second pair of shoes/socks for the afternoon round. That's a necessity if you have rain but even with clear skies, we found it helped.
Any of the courses offer a good lunch and before heading out again, a change of both helped our dogs get around the pm round. One in the group used cross trainers and said it was fine.
