I am playing Pebble next week and want to utilize the caddie service. Has anyone used the service and can refer me to request a great caddie? I am a single, and was looking to to tip around 50-60 bucks on the round. Pebble said they recommend 35-50 per bag...If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Or if you would like to share your experience with a caddie from Pebble that would be appreciated too.

I've used it. It's wonderful. I've never had a bad caddy there. Last time I played I had a guy named Steve, he's from New Mexico ... great guy, great caddie. Can't remember his last name to save my life though.

$35 a bag??? That might be if you are riding a cart. At pebble its probably close to $80 a bag minimum IMO

I played Pebble in November 2005 and had a bad experience using a caddy. It wasn't because of the caddy, but rather the double looping. I'm a 4 and shared the caddy with a guy that MIGHT have been a 25 on a good day. Needless to say I was chasing down my clubs all day while my caddy was chasing down the other guy's shots. And I had to use the other caddy to wipe my ball, help with reading the greens, etc.
I'm NOT a fan of the double loop unless the two guys sharing the caddy are of equal ability. It's not the caddy's fault, but it took something away from the experience.

I had a caddy in 1997 when I played there. A lot of times they will throw your bag on a cart (if there is a single rider), then walk out to the fway and meet you at your ball. My caddy had 2 bags, so thats what he did. It worked great and he was really a good caddy and was a great experience for me. It cost me 60 bucks and I gave him an additional 10. I shot 4 over that day with a double on 18. Even on the front after birding the 1st two holes. My caddy probably saved me 3 to 4 strokes on the greens, he knew every break. Caddies that know greens can really make your round. Plus after the 1st hole, he just handed me an iron he picked up my game and club yardages that quick, it was un real.
funny side note: I played really well that day and on no. 18 the tee was being rebuilt, so they had up playing way up front about 40 yds ahead of the normal tee box. It was a real downer. I needed par for 74. I wanted to hit 3 wood up the middle, but my caddy says " no, Hit driver and you can hit the green in 2". I really just wanted to put the ball into play and make par, but ended up taking his advice and blew it OB Right. You shoulda seen the look on my caddies face, he felt so bad. I'm not gonna complain about 76 though. The course is great, enjoy!

I think that would be $100 + tip. The rates last time I was there was $50 + tip for a double looper. I totally agree, pay the extra and get a caddy to just carry for you. After blowing 5 bills to play the course what's another $100? I have had some great times down there with the caddies and you would be very unlucky to get one who doesn't know the greens.

The clubhouse said that it was a 75 fee for a caddie and they recommend tipping 35-50 for the round. I am definatley going to do the caddie thing, I just hope I dont get stuck with a crappy one. lol...

NO and YES
First time I asked for caddy but then I denied the caddy due to the fact that
- he wanted to double loop (you also do not share a girl or do you? no way)
- and therefore alos required I change my tour bag to a pebble beach logo light weight bag so he can carry 2 bags (also no way)
this was due to
- no more caddies available at that time and
- my tee was already up ( on a just walk in basis asking for tee time and yes they can!!).
Therefore, I carried my tour bag no problem at all as I hate carts and prefer walking even with tour bag so what (thats why I do not like the golf cart mandatory issue mainly in the US such as the lovely Half Moon Bay Old Course; Ocean Course still works for walking).
but NO way to be unhappy at Pebble at all.
The caddy of my playing partners felt sorry about the situation and helped me reading greens, cleaing clubs golf ball etc. for free. Guess what I gave him a tip of 60$ and all very happy.
The next round I played Pebble I asked for the same caddie I tipped before and all tunred out fine (single loop my tour bag with me some good advice from caddy nearly as good as from a Pro; highly recommended). However, some US guys where complaining about the cadiies there (maybe it depends)
Since then I sticked to that guy all the time I went to Pebble in 2004/2005. At that time it was 60$ for caddy for double loop. I do not remmeber how much I paid for single loop at that time only that I tipped him 40$ each time. Good service good tip.
GREAT PLACE THOUGH

Using a caddie is invaluable. Tip is 60-80 bucks and make sure you don't bring a staff/cart bag - they'll stick it on a cart and your caddie will riding while you walk. Bring a carry bag if you want the full experience. have fun!

Played Spyglass in 2003. They have a stable of caddies at Pebble, Spy and Spanish Bay that all rotate i believe. My caddie was awsome and definatly invaluable at Spyglass. Don't know about Pebble but I know the guy I had was awsome. Worth the cash $. A lot of them are prospective PGA professionals so they take it very serious.

Played PB in July08 and halved a caddie. Really nice guy, abuot 45 and spoke with a scottish accent. His name escapes me right now. On the first tee box he asked me how far I hit a three wood, 5 iron and 9 iron...he said he could figure it out from there. By the third hole he had me figured out. It helped immensly and probably saved me 6 strokes that day. I will spare you the details but I was part of a 24 man group that was hosted by a guy that lives on 18. We tipped the caddie $60 each and I was told later that the host tipped each caddie an extra $150. Tipped the shoe guy $5.
Next day four of us split a forecaddie. He helped a ton...I think we each tipped him $40, shoe guys $5.
I wont ever play PB without a caddie.

Call the Caddiemaster and request Big Tony if you can, he's excellent...

You don't want a caddy who's double bagging? That's like saying you deserve the seat next to you to be vacant on an airplane. Fine - pay the guy the rate for a double to carry just your bag if you feel that way.
Oh, and there are NO bad caddies at Pebble.

That's fine if there are caddies available and they give you the option. The OP now knows he has the option. Had I known more than 2 minutes before my tee time that they were double looping, I would have chosen to pay extra. But I literally met my caddy at the starters podium which is adjacent to the first tee. A quick bag change and we were off and playing.
I don't see where anyone here is asking for a single for the price of a double, or two seats for the price of one as you say.
FWIW, I've played a handful of courses with caddies and Pebble is the ONLY one I've played where it's standard to have a double loop.
