I am officially done playing in captains choice tournaments! I like playing in them because they are fun with the right group of guys. I played in one in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. The conditions were TERRIBLE!!! It poured most of the round. The front nine we played 7 holes in rain so hard it was impossible to keep your hands and grips dry. They said they would only cancel play if there was lightning......which there was none. We may have had 2 1/2 holes that the rain was only considered a sprinkle, the rest of the round was in flat out rain! Our group consisted of 3 players with an index of less than 5 and one player that shoots in the high 80's as the norm. We shot a 6 under 66 and considering the amount of water on the entire course we felt that was a really darn good score. When we putted, there were rooster tails of water coming off the ball just to put it in perspective. When we got done and went in the clubhouse to eat lunch they started posting scores and I watched in disbelief to see a 58 and a 59 get posted on the sheets. I am not being bitter but due to the conditions I feel that 14 under was IMPOSSIBLE! I was so annoyed I didn't even stay to see the who the group was who said they shot that score for fear that I would walk over to their table and tell them they were a bunch of cheaters. I ate my lunch and went to the heated pool at the condo. It just amazes me that people will go to that extent to cheat to win a captains choice event.

I'm sure it does happen, but don't automatically assume anybody that shoots that good is cheating. I help run a charity tournament here, and 2 years ago a team of all 18 handicappers shoots like 62 or something. They chipped in 4 times, and made 3 putts over 25 feet. They were friends with alot of us board members, so somebody saw almost every one of their amazing shots as we (the board members) were riding around, and they gave the money back to the foundation at the end. I guess I'm saying yea, it does happen, but don't rule out 'one of those amazing days'.

I guess I will ask this........any of you guys have any ideas on how to reduce the amount of cheating in these events??? Maybe there should be groups of 8 and you keep the other teams scores.

Been there, done that. The friggin' round lasts FOREVER!!! The best solution I've come up with, but I've never seen it used, is if the tournament is large enough, and you have enough volunteers, just have a 'marshal' with each 2 groups, that can watch. You know, sit on the tee and watch the other group putt out, etc. Just knowing somebody is watching will stop 99% of it, in my opinion.

There is truth to people having that "GREAT ROUND" and under certain conditions I am good with that. Trust me when I say the weather on Saturday in Myrtle Beach really S*&%ed. If there is anyone on here from Myrtle Beach they will attest to the fact that the rain was hard and steady all day. Saturday was not conducive to one of those "Great Rounds".......there was so much water on the greens that a twenty foot putt had to be hit like it was a forty footer.

Ive been on teams that shoot 20+ under... i dont see why 14 in those conditions are that out of reach... I know it does happen but you know what assuming does.
A good thing to do is only play in captain choice tournaments that are for charity.

Not sure if I would go accusing others. I played in a scramble once and we shot something like 23 under. Granted all four of us were either scratch - +5. It was funny because when i walked into the restroom, a bunch of guys were accusing us of cheating. They had no idea i was part of that winning team. Anyhow, i just smirked and walked out.

It was a charity event that is why I played in it. Like I said I am not being bitter, to be honest I really don't care, I enjoyed the round with 3 guys I like hanging around with. I just hope that winning 58 was legit and if it was, more power to them. I should have put that in the original post. If it was an honest score and I hope for the guys that posted it that it was......they played a hell of a round of golf in those conditions.

14 under can easily be reached .....were there mulligans you could buy? or string you could purchase? Sometimes when a tournament offers the 4 foot string to use, half the time people will come in not knowing how to use it. That could buy you maybe 10 stokes right there. I played in a tournament and everyone who didn't use the string thought everyone who did cheated. If string is available and you don't purchase it, you can not win, it is impossible!
p.s. Using string is a continuation of the previous shot. If you hit an approach shot on a par 4 to 3 inches from the hole, then you hold the string down and tie or cut off 3 inches and write down a 2 instead of a 3. You continue this until the string is all used up.
I'm not a fan of these tournaments but if you play in one and it's offered then buy it!

RMS...you did the right thing by not saying anything because you never know. Like you, I have played in events like that and it took a full effort to keep my mouth shut after play.
I used to be a sales rep in the beer industry and part of the job was to play in retailer (bar) tournaments and charity tournaments. I played in about 10 or so for a few years in a row. Most of the time if you win nothing of real value. I've seen a lot of BS.
I played in one university athletic foundraiser 2 years ago. We came in at 18 under. Another 4-man team came in about 30 minutes after us (and the word had spread around the course about our score). They were 19 under. Here's the good part. They said they eagled the last 2 holes to "nip us". Both are tougher par 4's -playing 395 and 401 yards respectfully. They said they holed out from the fairway on both holes. They wouldn't look at us at the dinner. We could only laugh. Perfect, huh?

Easy fix..... Call them out for another round 10$ a hole.... I have been on both sides of the stick and I feel your pain. I play about 5-7 work scrambles a year my group is: Me(+1), 6, 10,12 We will shoot around -14 to -18 Every time. Last year we played an event and finished 18 under and played lights out. The team in front of us came in with 22 under and we watched them make 4 pars.... So after they got there Money I called them out and said lets go 10 bux per hole per person birds are 20$ and eagles are 30$. They were cocky and we were on. @ 18 they owed us 160.00 each! Now this may back fire in your face but after watching them play I knew it was BS. Anyway long story short its going to happen, Just remember the main reason you are playing and enjoy it bro!
My 2 cents
