Everyone says he's one of the best because he "speaks his mind". Well, for me I can't stand him. He just never shuts up. "The face is still open right there." Yeah, John. The whole image is blurry beyond recognition but you can see that the face is still open. "There's a clump of grass behind the ball. That's trouble." Uhm, John, we're looking at it from the blimp.
I'm muting as we speak.

I love Johnny Miller! He does speak his mind. I really liked the comment about Sergio hitting one of the closest shots on that longish par 3, 7 feet I believe, and not making the put. Not exactly sure how it went but it was hilarious. He's been there and done that as well. He's got room to talk. Simp

I hate Johnny but who are you going to go to, Lanny? His stupid comments at the Masters last year made me turn the sound off.
He's much better than Faldo and Zinger. Those two are unbearable

Sounds like I'm in the minority. I like Johnny, and I like Azinger and Faldo. I know Johnny can be over the top, but I like that he calls it like it is, and I like that he doesn't say the same things over and over like Lanny. I also like the NBC crew which helps. I like Zinger and Faldo bedause they both know the game, and when their on they have a good banter going between them. Agree with Johnny's posts earlier, I played the Bridges of/in San Ramon, played really well but talk about a ridiculous design. Different strokes for different folks.

Peter Alliss is the god of golf commentary. You can't beat him, he's a legend. If you Americans can, then watch the Masters coverage on the BBC because there is no adverts at all. The BBC's coverage of golf is second to none. The reason I dislike watching golf on Sky is that you see about five shots then there is an advert and some commentary with the camera filming them talking! Long live Peter Alliss and the BBC.

I agree with the majority of you in saying that Johnny Miller sucks. It's like listening to Joe Morgan or Harold Reynolds on ESPN broadcast a baseball game. Everything references their playing days and it is so annoying, you'd almost rather not watch just to save yourself the agony of hearing him/them speak. Johnny Miller may telll it like it is, but 99% of the time he's not saying anything a viewer with most of his senses in tact couldn't have observed, i.e the sergio comment from saturday. Take a hike Johnny

What was Johnny Miller's quote about Craig Parry a few years ago? Something along the lines of "If Ben Hogan saw Craig Parry swing, he'd throw up."
I think that's hilarious. What's the alternative? "His swing is well, a bit, shall we say, unorthodox."
That's not interesting or funny. I think Miller is both.
I also like Faldo. Zinger is ok, but if he was gone, I wouldn't lose sleep.

I agree with most of you, Johnny is terrible. Every comment he made today was just stupid. Not pronouncing Player's names right, telling us a guy hit a certain club, when he really hit a different club than what Johnny said, or of course "How the USGA really needs to re-think their rules on grooves." but the best is always the "Tiger is a special player"...as if we didn't relize that or something!

Miller might be a bad announcer, (I think he is an ok announcer & think he's a good guy...I've met him twice and he was extremely nice both times), but he was a fantastic ball striker...IMO one of the best.

NBC is the best golf coverage bar none of any of the other broadcasts. Johnny Miller is a bit over the top on the things he says but that's just him. Gary Koch is great, as is Rolfing, and Maltbie. Miller knows his golf and that's just that. He's been one of the best in the game, and is by far the most accomplished player of all the announcers. I just love watching NBC cover the southern swing, they are the best events leading into augusta with HILL, and Players. They do a fine job, especially with the special pieces like the airplane one today. I really enjoyed that. NBC is the only one that does stuff like that. As for Miller he's fine in my book, i'm pretty layed back and he doesn't bother me at all. I just disregard about the stuff like when he said Hogan would puke if he say craig parry's swing. But i did laugh and often times i'll just laugh him off. And for the record, V grooves would make a huge difference coming out of the rough.

He said that about Craig Parry, not Craig Perks. And it was exactly 2 years ago at the same tournament (Doral). The same tournament that Parry won when he holed out from the fairway on 18 in a playoff against Scott Verplank. The he tried to back track when he called Parry, and said he "didn't mean it in a bad way" Oh, sorry Johnny, of course a comment like that would be meant the 'good' way. WTF???

I like Johnny Miller, too. As a matter of fact, I think he's the best anchor they have. Dan Hicks, his straight man, is not bad, either.
Here's my dream team of golf announcers:
1. Johny Miller,
2. David Feherty,
3. Gary McCord,
4. Peter Oosterhuis
5. Peter Alliss (he's the best!)
6. Nick Faldo
7. Paul Azinger
There may be others, too, but IMO there are far too many, and they NEVER, ever keep quiet. Do the networks feel that if there is silence for a minute they're going to lose their audience? Or, alternatively, do they think they have to do ALL the thinking for us?

I find myself saying 'shut up Johnny' when he's on so I often watch without sound.

Johnny is just so pompous and often incorrect.... during Sunday's round, he talked about the east winds and the flight patterns over the course... then Jimmy Roberts does his report a few minutes later and says it's the westernly winds... my money would be on Jimmy for that fact!
I especially dislike Johnny when he's doing the Women's US Open (on NBC) - it's the only womens event he does all year and it shows. He doesn't know the players and frequently relates everything to the PGA tour - 'Tiger might chip that but she's likely to bump & run', crap like that... ugh.
I like some of The Golf Channel folks - Brian Hammons, Donna Caponi, Kay Cockerill, Dottie Pepper and Val Skinner... and certainly Mike Tirico and Judy Rankin from NBC.
Most of you guys only list men as commentators... do you not like women commentating on PGA events? I've never heard them make sweeping comments abouts the tour/players like Johnny does w/the LPGA! But then again for network coverage, the women are typically on the course not in the booth.
Oh, and David Feherty ROCKS!
I'll say this much for Miller, he hit the DT putt right on the money. Johnny was stressing the fact on 18 that DT should lag such a long putt and not get too aggressive...make Tiger beat you!
Now, it turns out that would've been the right strategy since Tiger went on to bogey 18.
But what I like is that Johnny said it BEFORE the putt.

Granted it was a hard putt, but I can't imagine the thought of "I'll play for par, Tiger might make bogey", that is a sure fire way to end up "kissing your sister". Tiger hit it in the rough all week and still lead in GIR. What if his lie was good/ perfect. Tom's just hit a terrible put. Tiger said it in the interview afterward, once DT bogeyed he could hit it in the grandstand, and he sure wasn't going to mess with the water. Using Miller's logic that Tiger might bogey the hole if DT holes the putt, weirder things have happened, he wins the tournament.

Faldo is soon to be without a TV home and ABC is out of Golf. So, Miller can be replaced and move on to a religious mission. He has talked about doing one in a few years. Faldo will probably want to play the senior tour, so if they want him they need to move now! For credibility, Nick has 6 majors and was the dominant player of the period from Watson to Woods. He gives players' insights and can be amusing in a silly English comedy way. I think he has earned the 18th hole chair on one of the networks. Still, I'd really love to hear him with Nance.
I remember during the Ryder Cup some years ago, Zinger said something many took to be "Johnny Miller is the biggest moron on TV." Later, it was revealed that his remark was actually, "Johnny Miller is the biggest Mormon on TV." Either way, Azinger was and is correct, unless you count the Golf Channel where Brian Hewitt sets the standard for morons.
