KEV-O
Did anybody see this? First, in an interview he talks about how he had gone double bogey- triple bogey on the last 2 holes. Next hole is a 156 yard par 3 in which they profile Bo's swing. He pulls it seriously 30 yards.
I will say that I know he's extremely athletic and it did say that he was a little rusty.
BUT THERE IS NO WAY HE IS A 5 HANDICAP.
Bo- if you are reading this consider it a challenge. Pink slips, my soul, whatever you want to play for...

usually when you sandbag you have a high handicap and play to like a 5 handicap, but bo playing to a 5 and being a poor golfer just does not equate to sandbagging in my eyes, but i could be wrong. smile.gif

yup saw that, his driver swing was pretty ugly too. I think he had like a 112 ss and only flew it like 240 and launched it like at 8*

Well, normally you are right, but the OP is willing to bet his home and soul on a game. So, I think in three well timed bad swings on TV Bo could have grabbed someone hook line and sinker for a large, large bet. Sandbagging was more a commentary on the OP exuberance to bet "the house" than it was on Bo's actual skill. Wether he can back it up is another story. I never saw the video clip, but sounds as if he might not be that good.

"Bo is a 5 handicap but says he's playing to about a 14 right now". Well hell, I must be a +2 playing to an 11 then. drag.gif

It was good to see him out there though. One of my favorite athletes growing up and one of the best athletes I've ever seen. He's a funny guy too, cracks me up. "Golf gives me something to get pissed off about" he says.

I have to say, there have been very few celebrities that have lived up to a stated handicap. Jim Garner and Justin Timberlake have been two that I can think of that played the game well. I'm sure there's more.

Big difference between playing your home course 3 times a week, which may or may not be as hard as the course they are playing on, add TV cameras, the pressure of playing in a PGA tour event, with PGA tour pros, add a gallery, maybe you havnt been playing much over the winter it is not hard to believe a 5 handi could go double triple bogey. Maybe he has a vanity-cap maybe not, but until your are in his shoes I wouldnt judge his game on 3 holes played in front of the TV cameras. My handi has fluctuated between 5 and 7 over the last 10 years and I have gone through stretches where I have done the same thing without the added pressure, I also birdied 3 holes in a row several weeks ago as well, it all just depends...................

Bo Jackson - The only Pro Athlete ever to play in the All Star game and the Pro Bowl.
When he ran over Brian Bosworth after a lot of pre-game trash talking, he leaned over
him and said "next time have the bus fare with you, the first ride was free."
If he can't play golf, it will be the first game he couldn't play.

Played baseball with the man in KC. Did things on the baseball field I never thought could happen. Unbelievable God given talent. This was all up close and personal on a day to day basis. It would have been nice to see what more he could have done if he hadn't had the hip injury.

Hey Boon...please share a quick story of his prowess if you would.....some of the guys on this forum are too young to have seen him in his prime. He was one awesome athlete as you say.

I'm getting old...so please correct me if I'm wrong.....but didn't he make a bare hand running catch down near the left field foul pole and then gun a guy out at home with an unreal throw from the warning track?

mullie29
mark m, I remember Kevin Mitchell doing that against my Cardinals in St. Louis in a game. I do not know if Bo J. did it in a game or not. I was there at old Busch stadium when Mitchell caught the fly ball with his bare hand. M29

Bo was something else. Man, that guy was good.

As posted above, hard to compare until you've played "under the spotlight" they are under.

That being said, I think we've all seen our fair share of tour pros hit some nasty worm burners, shanks, skulled wedges, fat shots, etc....
It happens to the best of golfers, even El Tigre isn't immune to it.

To add, if we didn't know better and just saw parts of his swing, 90% of golfers here would prolly think they could "take" Jim Furyk and his "chop" swing! biggrin.gif

I'd had my fair share or run ins with that guy with the no name, outdated clubs, carry bag held together by duct tape, and chop swing, who doesn't do anything special, but ends up carding a -3 leaving me to wonder WTF? just happened?

What's so exciting about a running bare hand catch, or was the throw involved as well? Anyways, I love that story PickerJohn, classic smile.gif

Here's some running bare hand catches...the reason why i'm not not awed by a running barehand catch (it is very pixilated but meh):

I remember reading back in the day that doctors said that the athletic power Bo generated muscularly was more than any human's bones, tendons and ligaments were built to withstand....kind of like too much torque on the chassis. He really was a freak of nature and had the kind of natural strength you can't develop in the gym. Although unofficial, he ran a sub 4.2 40 which is sick for a guy his size. No wonder he flattened Brian Bosworth.

Looking at his golf swing, he generated 114 mph swing speed without making anywhere near a full shoulder turn and without maintaining any width whatsoever. A slight improvement in technique alone and Bo would be crushing it. Baseball hitters know about timing and lag, and Bo knows baseball. (sorry, couldn't resist) rolleyes.gif

I think it is wrong to question someone's handicap unless you have some proof that he is recording lower scores. You make it sound like a 5 can not have a bad day now and then. Remember he is playing courses set up this week for the pro's.
I am a 10 HC and don't always play to it. It is easy to shot a eighty one day and then struggle the next day to break ninety.
If you had watched Bo's interveiw on the GC you would have heard him say he had not played in a while and was playing more like a fifteen or something.
I'm not sure why people here think they need to question everyone's game. I would like to see anyone who is a 5 go play those courses today and play to their HC. I doubt many would be able to do it.
Just my two cents.....
PreppySlapCut
They were interviewing Kurt Russel and Oliver Hudson (his son), and Hudson was -7 on is own ball as a 4 handicap.

There is alot of celebritiy handicapps I question.

my experince is that celebs are not the only one with this problem.

i would not doubt that bo is a 5. he could have been rusty. he is one of the best all around athletes of all time, i wouldnt really bet against him.

plus, its Bo Jackson

Bo is awesome. I remember a time he tracked down a ball in the gap, caught it, then ran up the outfield wall. Also saw a time he ran back to warning track to catch a ball, then turned flat footed and threw it home ON THE FLY to get the tagging runner out. Amazing.

Plus, Bo had the greatest baseball card of all time.

Kevin Mitchell made that catch you are talking about. Bo one time ran down a ball in the alley, I think, and threw a laser from the wall to home in the air, and threw out Harold Reynolds trying to score. You really have to see the play to appreciate it - I think the guy that hit it had an EASY stand up double, and Reynolds could fly, and got thrown out trying to score from first. He was probably the best athlete I've seen, he could do anything he wanted to.

You knew he was a supreme talent when pro's would stop whatever they were doing and watch him run, throw, or hit and just stand there with their mouths open like "What the heck was that? That's not possible is it?" Probably what some golf pro's do when they watch some of the things Tiger does.

I don't know what his golf swing looks like but I'm sure a lot of it is just forearms and wrists. The batspeed he could produce just by flicking his wrists was off the charts. Just exploded.... black eye.gif
