Full Version: rules regarding 2 balls lying dead next to each other on a fairway?

So I was playing today with 2 guys and they both hit thier drives in pretty much the identical position, one about 2 inches directly behind the other. The one in front couldnt hit his ball without hitting the other on the backswing, and the one behind couldnt hit his ball without hitting the other on his follow through. Whats the ruling for this? Are they allowed to lift and replace or is it a play it as it lies type deal? I was baffled.

One of the balls may be marked. If the lie is altered look at 20-3b.
