Perfect timing, announcers had just finished telling us how well he was playing!

I was telling my son to watch his swing.
Then the ball ended in the water.

In a strange way that made me feel so much better about my last few range sessions..... I feel his pain

crazy that he had like 8 birdies in the round and was on fire for all of it except that one swing.

I totally missed it, was it a full shot? Please give details. Not his new shiny MP62s?

his tee shot on the par 3 15th(?) was a hosel rocket into the desert/rocks on the side of the hill and it bounced all the way down to the water at the foot of the slope. pretty funny.

Is he supposedly playing 62s now? It looked to me like he had the old blades in the bag. After he hit the shank, he held up the club to look at the face and it was clearly a blade of some sort.

Lol I'd love to see the video, if there is one

Did see that, that was so horrible, I was almost hoping it'd stay on the hillside and he could hit out of there

Happens to the best of us. He still shot 66 after taking double bogey on that hole. It looks like he's back and should do well in 09.

As shanks go, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. It had sustained air time and so it wasn't a total "hacker's special." I remember seeing Mark O'Meara hit a shank in a tournament and that was much worse, shooting 45 degrees to the right and into a tree.
The best thing about Donald's was that it hit the side of the hill and just kept bouncing toward the water, prolonging the agony. The funny thing was that he was draining everything in sight and was probably thinking about hitting another one stiff.
Then Justin Leonard gets up to hit his tee shot and Maltbie says "he's probably addressing this at the toe."

I saw it and it was marvelous. Got to see it in a home theater with HD so it was that much better. And yes, he did hold the club right up to his face to look at the dimple marks on the hosel and you could clearly see it was an MP62.
It was classic, 7 under on the day, gets on tv and they say he has the round of the day going and he presents to a national audience el hosel!!
Kudos for Leonard for not only following up sir shanks alot with a really great shot but for also not laughing at him.
Good to see Luke back though and I hope he has a really good 09...classy guy.

And that, my friends is why I am a desk jockey most of the week. Still, you gotta admit, he has a sweet swing!

Totally wid you brethren.
66 with a double - he's got game.
And one of the sweetest swings on tour - period.

That was a great TV moment. I'm glad a bunch of people caught the humor in the timing between the shot and the commentary.
It would have been great had it bounced off the rocks into play- had it been a straight hosel rocket it probably would have. I don't think it was a pure shank- it looked like it went quite far down range, but maybe that was just the video?
When you shoot a 66, those shots are a lot easier to laugh off.

I saw it...I'm a big Donald fan but the commentary timing and the way he inspected the hosel on his new MP62(great advert) did make me laugh...good to see him back fit and ready for a strong '09...

How about his wedge shot from the ball-drop after the fact...hit it about 8 feet or so. Now THAT'S impressive!
Like Maltby said..."easy to hit this one just a bit long and left..." Ha, ha

That was painful to watch. The ball rolling down the hill reminded me of the Plinko game from The Price is Right game show.

What was great was the timing... the announcers had just finished saying how he was making a great comeback after surgery and had birdied the first seven holes... he was really hitting the ball well... look for nothing but good things from Luke going forward...
whack... I can't believe he just shanked it! Straight into the mountain... hilarious.
It's probably not worth all the responses, and it is kind of a "you had to see it for it to be funny" moment.
